========================================================== 1. Korean War Unknown - Identified - Returning Home! ==========================================================
May 19th, 2003 marked a day of
announcements that gives a Minneapolis, MN, family member back after 50 plus years.
PFC Ronald David Lilledahl, of C/1/7 1MARDIV, lost his life on Nov 28th 1950 during the fierce fighting of what is called the Chosin
Reservoir campaign, a fight forever etched into the memories of US military families.
He was buried in a shallow and rocky gravesite in North Korea and not able to be "brought out" by his company members due to the
ferocity of the fighting during those hellish days of cold and combat.
During Operation Glory in 1954, the North Korean Government returned remains of what were believed to be UN and American Soldiers and Marines. He was
one of the 866 US Unknowns buried at the Hawaiian Punchbowl. (See Article 2, this news)PFC Lilledahl's family and friends will honor him with full military honors this week.
Shelly Lilledahl, niece
writes: "The service for Ronald is public. Who ever has been touched by the Korean War (as well as all service personnel) is sincerely invited to attend. This not only brings healing to my father (Ronald and my dad were
identical twins), but also to all those that served. This service is not only for Ronald and his family, it also is for the glory and honor of our servicemen and women.
Here is the information regarding the service, if you
would like to and are able to attend.
Friday, June 13th from 12:00 - 2:00. The service begins at 1:00pm
Fort Snelling Veteran's Memorial Chapel 1 Federal Drive
Internment with Full Military Honors at Fort Snelling National Cemetery 7601 34th Avenue South Minneapolis, MN

2. CILH I - Central Identification Laboratory - Hawaii - Success ==========================================================
For a very long time, the forensic laboratory at Hickam Field, on Oahu, has labored quietly,
using tools that are always being improved with the growth of scientific research.
These dedicated men and women of CILHI are well-known, as a group, to the families of those still missing or unidentified from
American military combat.
The story, in Section 1 of this newsletter, about PFC Lilledahl, marks a significant success for CILHI and all US Military families who have not had their loved ones returned.
Use
of DNA to assist in identification of remains increased over the past few years due to incredible scientific progress with the process itself. Early in 1999 the CILHI staff dis-interred two sets of remains from the Hawaiian
Punchbowl as an effort to use DNA to identify them.
If successful, that test would result in more dis-interment for similar testing. Sadly, a foreign substance sprayed on the remains, in Japan, circa 1954 prevented DNA
extraction. (See https://www.cilhi.army.mil/pr052103.htm)
It must have been very discouraging to the CILHI staff at the time, but scientists kept at it. A new computer program for working with dental records was developed during this time. That program was applied to the laborious
task of making identification.
Perseverance in research led to a stamp sized chest x-ray which was in medical records. This x-ray and the dental computer program led to the positive identification.
This
fantastic progress has to encourage other families and lift the spirits of the hard-working CILHI teams in Hawaii and locations around the globe. P.S. If you work for CILHI, we would like to hear your thoughts on
helping to identify the lost from Korea. EMAIL Hal and Ted

========================================================== 3. Tiger Survivors Website back online - former Korean War POW's ==========================================================
Rose McKinley reports that the
website for the Tiger Survivors has come back online after technical difficulties. The KWP did not know that the site was offline and had pointed to the site in several editions of the newsletter.
The recent re-broadcast of
Jonathan Grupper's film about the Tigers and member, Johhnie Johnson was a great tribute to these civilian and military hero's.
Rose writes: : .... ... "Operation Re-Union" on the History Channel and a very
well-done interview with Johnnie Johnson at the Andersonville POW Museum.
Readers Digest made all Americans aware of Johnnie Johnson in Dec of 1996.

4. Contact your Media for June 25th and July 27th stories ==========================================================
The annual June 25th Commemoration ceremonies date is fast approaching. This date is always
set aside by South Koreans and Americans of Korean descent to honor the sacrifices made by civilian and military in the face of the onslaught by North Korea on June 25th of 1950.
The date of July 27th, 1953 - 2003 is nearing
and preparations are in progress around the world to honor United Nations Forces who answered the call for a small nation in Asia.
Not only are the military who served and died to be "Remembered" included are,
Orphans, Adoptee's, ROK, KATUSA, Civilian Laborers and Civilian Refugee's, many thousands of whom perished from the effects of the war.
Be sure to mention stories about the "DMZ War", for those who served after the
truce of July 27, 1953 and continue to serve in South Korea.
The KWP urges all of our visitors to contact your local media and encourage them to feature stories about men and women you know who served. The wounded, those
Killed or Missing, Gold Star Mothers, families, the Korean civilians, etc., all need to be featured.
Step One, find the media contact: full name plus phone number.
Step Two, give full contact info for yourself and
the storyline. Add your local vet group contact point, address and phone.
Step Three, Try to get a commitment and date from your media for the story. Do obtain the Headline or what is known as "Slug Line" if
a story is developed.
Step Four, Use email/websites to broadcast the story. Let the KWP know so we can also broadcast the pending story.
This process has worked well in the past for the KWP and visitors to the KWP. Both Hal and Ted will be available for any media person to suggest stories and contact points.
Tell your media contact to email and/or call the KWP, if needed.
Editor Note: We are not interested in stories
about the Korean War Project, rather, only about the people affected by the war.

7. US Postal Service Announces Korean War Veterans Stamp ==========================================================
Jim Landrum writes:
"Ted, ...Not sure you know about this Korean War Veterans stamp to be issued on July 27,2003."
Editor Note:The stamp features the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Wash., DC, and the group of
soldiers marching. The picture on the stamp was taken in a full snow-storm.
This is a fantastic tribute, the work is top-drawer. This will be a stamp the KWP will purchase for a long time to come.
========================================================== 8. Condition of Washington, DC - Korean War Veterans Memorial
==========================================================
The KWP has reported in prior issues about a recurring decline in condition of the Korean War Veterans Memorial, overseen by the National Parks Service.
Last year, another grass roots effort by Veteran Groups, Vets and concerned persons helped to get the Memorial in shape again.
Martha Boltz, a DC resident, writes about her 2003 visit on Memorial Day:
"Ted - am attaching a file of two photos of the Memorial last Monday, so you all can see that the little bushes are alive, well, and growing. And of the wreaths there."
The pictures Martha sent show great progress and wreaths for Remembrance. If you are one of the ones doing this cleanup, please let us know about your work to keep the Memorial squared away. with photos if possible.
========================================================== 9. Camp 5 POW - Arnold N. Brandt =========================================================
The KWP received this recently:
Good Morning,
I'm a 56 year old woman who's father died in camp 5 in North Korea in 1951 - questionable where his remains are. I've just been given some letters he wrote to his 'sweetheart' during WW2 in which is this article I'm
attaching.
It was written while he was in Ireland before he was sent to battle - somewhere around 1942. I think it says what the servicemen felt and believed. I can't
tell if he wrote the article or if he copied it from a paper or magazine.
Thank You Barbara A. Brandt daughter of Arnold N. Brandt - Army attached to ROK
REMEMBER ME AUTHOR UNKNOWN
Homesick in a land that's strange and sometimes lonely too - far from all I cherish most - But there's a job to do - That is why I'm here - and if the choice were mine to make I wouldn't come back - no not yet -
For something is at stake - something we must fight to keep - and die for willingly
That dear - that sweet - that precious thing men call Liberty - and so until this battle is won in exile I must be - But just one
little thing I ask -
that you remember me.
