1. A Special Favor - Talk To Your Children

===========================================

Veterans, please talk to your children.

Countless veterans find it impossible to talk about
the war.

Sit your children down and get it out before it is
too late.

The Korean War Project and the Korean War Veterans
Memorial came about because my own father would not
talk about the war.

Years ago, I asked my father why he wore the Silver
Star on his uniform. He told me it was none of my
business. Finally, we talked for one hour...

I discovered my father was awarded the Silver Star
for a failed mission. A young Marine pilot, Arthur
Donald Delacy, was hit by friendly fire over
Heartbreak Ridge at the height of the October 1951
battle.

My father volunteered to fly his rescue helicopter
into the teeth of the enemy. After several attempts,
Major Barker was unable to rescue Delacy.

Delacy disappeared forever.

In 1989, I made a pilgrimage to Hill 931, Heartbreak
Ridge, deep inside the DMZ, the first American to reach
that point since the 1950's.

Talk to your children.

2. Please Spread the Word

===========================================

Please contact your local media and tell them about
the Korean War Project and what we mean to you.

On the Internet, the Project is well known. But for
veterans and family members who do not regularly use
the Internet, we are unknown.

June 25 is coming up.

3. Memorial Day 2000

===========================================

Memorial Day 2000 was a great day at the Project. We
handled thousands of visitors and answered many
questions via email and telephone.

It is nice to get up every morning and be allowed to
do good work.

4. June 25 Washington Trip Cancelled

===========================================

Do to financial and other reasons, we are cancelling
our planned trip to the Korean War Veterans Memorial
on June 25.

Over the years, we have had a number of problems
securing the cooperation of the U.S. government in
obtaining records and information relating to the
Korean War.

Simply put, we are persona non grata with the present
Clinton administration, some Department of Defense
operations, and several influential veterans groups.

Through channels, we have learned that the Korean War
Project is not a welcome addition to any official
ceremonies related to the Korean War and will
permanently remain so.

In 1984, when I created the Trust Fund for the Korean
War Veterans Memorial, I made several bitter
adversaries.

The payback from those gentlemen has lasted for almost
16 years. Washington politics is hell.

After 21 years of working with Korean War veterans, it
is not pleasant to stand outside the fence and watch
from afar.

**** The only Member of Congress who supports the Korean
War Project is U.S. Representative Pete Sessions (R) of
Dallas, the only member of Congress who is also a
payed-up member of the Korean War Project.

5. About Our Staff

===========================================

The Korean War Project is rapidly growing. We have
been online for over 5 years.

Some of our visitors grow impatient with us because
we can't immediately respond to requests for help.

My brother Ted and I are the entire staff of the
Project. We do all the Project, including all design,
programming, hardware and software, history, Email,
and maintain all the hundreds of unit pages.

Just handling the technical end, the servers, databases,
and webpages themselves is a fulltime job.

We maintain over 300,000 files on the Project.

We fail at times, so please take into consideration
our shortcomings.

6 Korean War Project Traveling Memorial

===========================================

As many of you know, the Korean War Veterans Memorial
in Washington, D.C., does not list the names of those
lost in Korea.

Several years ago, I visited the Vietnam Traveling Wall
when it was displayed here in Dallas.

I felt at the time that we should create a Korean War
Project Traveling Memorial.

We attempted fund raising for such a project two years
ago, but the response was not impressive. We discovered
without corporate support, such a Traveling Memorial
could never be a reality.

I think the time is right today. If you have contacts
with a corporation which might be interested in
honoring the Lost from the Korean War, please get in
touch with us.

We have put together a package of costs and expenses
and are ready to proceed.

The first request for display of a Traveling Memorial
comes from New York City for Veterans Day 2000.

**** We are NOT soliciting individual donations for a
Traveling Memorial. Funding must come from a corporate
sponsor.

Sincerely,

Hal Barker
