The following came in from George King and he is trying to compile a listing of folks interested in helping to fund a Korean War Veterans Memorial in Tennessee.
To: Ted Barker
From: George King, (E/1/1 USMC - Korea - 1951-1952) Ted, I need your help in compiling a mailing list of Korean vets in Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas. We are well on the way to raising
the funds for a Memorial Monument honoring the 38,500 War dead and those who answered the call to active duty from the Memphis area. ( Our cost - $ 97,500 - partially subscribed to.)
We are locating in Memphis' Overton Park
Veteran's Plaza, the location of statues and monuments to the WWI , WWII and Vietnam. Here we have perpetual care and maintenance.
We have a very distinctive architectural design. There is no civic funding, except for
the gift of the Monument location. Our research shows NO monument specifically dedicated to the Korean War Veterans in Tennessee.
We bought a mailing list from a commercial company which was supposed to be exclusively
for Korean War Vets. We mailed out 2,263 letters with little results as the mailing list went to general population, not specifically Korean War Vets as requested.
Can you help us. - Or direct me to a location where we can
obtain a list of Korean War Vets ?
I am committed to have this monument in honor of those men we lost in Korea. We are a proud lot !!

6. 9th Infantry Rgt (Manchu's) Liscum Bowl Restoration at 2ID Museum ==========================================================
From William McCool at: mccoollaw@pocketinet.com
Any former Manchu soldiers (9th Inf Reg) and many other 2nd Inf Div soldiers will be interested in
seeing this story on the restoration of the Liscum Bowl, which has been in the 2nd Inf museum for many decades. Those of us who saw it never realized that it is one of the largest silver art objects ever made, making it an
extremely important historical piece in its own right. Having done volunteer work at the Division museum during my tour of duty, I had the privilege of polishing it once.

Fire For Effect! Artillery Forward Observer in Korea
by Anthony J. (Tony) Sobieski
Forward by Major General Robert H. Scales, Jr. USA, former Commandant of the Army War College.
Major
General Robert Scales: "Now at last Tony Sobieski has frozen in amber a moment in history long forgotten. Generations of gunners will look to this work to understand their pedigree. And I will refer to it time and again
as I try to relive my own time as a member of that exclusive club of Forward Observers in combat."
Fire For Effect! is more than just a book about the Korean War. It is the untold history of the Korean War Artillery
Forward Observer, told by the men themselves. With over 100 interviews of Forward Observers from all across the front lines, the grittiness and reality of what these servicemen went through in the 'Forgotten War' is
brought to life once again so that their deeds while fighting in the wasteland known as 'Korea' may be remembered for future generations.

BOSWELL: A Sailor Aboard the USS Missouri (BB-63) 1944-1945.
A newly published book, thirteen years in the making,
collecting the cartoons of Robert Kennealy who served aboard the USS Missouri during World War II. Over 160 cartoons featuring Boswell, a simple sailor who made his own rules, frustrated his petty officers and
the officers with his wry humor and fine tuned the morale of his shipmates. The cartoons were eventually carried by the ship's newspaper, The Missourian, much to the delight of everyone aboard. Now after 60 years, this
collection has been put together after exhaustive research and rejuvenation.
The coffee table sized book (81/2 x 11) is available direct from the publisher at pre-release publisher prices. This book is a
sure winner, not only for battleship sailors, but for any sailor who ever sailed aboard a US Navy ship.

========================================================== 11. Alaska Air Command during the Korean War (6/50 - 7/54) - Recognition
==========================================================
For several months Dick Aronson and I have batted email back and forth about his desire to get a more complete recognition for those who served during the war years
while in Alaska.
Much of our key Early Warning and Strategic Defense systems were located in that cold clime and most of us who recall the Cold War years, well remember the urgency to address the security of the
northern route for missile and aircraft assault.
Give Dick your thoughts and assistance. If you served in the AAC or ADF, give him a shout.
From Dick:
Once again-- I have been trying to get someone in congress
or a KW organization to revisit the regulations concerning the awarding the KW ribbon for those who served in the Alaska Air Command during the KW (6/50 - 7/54). I have extensive research that supports my position.

Have emailed you in the past. Would it be possible to high light my request
for information regarding the 552nd Military Police Company which was in Korean War?
I have a good history of the unit during their WW2 activities but have come
up almost empty handed regarding the unit during Korean War. The unit is still on active duty in Korea and just won the award as the best MP Company.
They are also past recipients of the best MP Company in the US Army on two occasions. A great unit with a great and honorable history.
We just had a reunion of the Vietnam Veterans from the unit in Branson,
Missouri. It was a very emotional meeting and we would love to include those from the Korean War timeframe. We will be having another reunion in St. Louis next year. Time not yet determined.
If in a couple of your newsletter you could highlight our unit with a specific request for information and hopefully pictures of the unit during the performance of their mission during the Korean War that would be greatly
appreciated.
Many thanks,
Dave Kennedy

My bill HB 2369 (new number) has been introduced into the House on 16 May and we now need the widest dissemination possible. We need the maximum effort to contact our reps to
get them to co sponsor this non partisan bill. Contacting Senators is vital to as we will need this introduced into the Senate ASAP. This bill will give closure to the Next of Kin of those who died while a POW who were
never awarded the Purple Heart. I would appreciate it if you could send this out to your membership and E-Mail partners.

15. Veterans History Project, Library of Congress - Indiana ==========================================================
The Library of Congress - LOC has been doing an outreach program for a couple of years now. The
following message is from one of our Indiana based vets, John Quinn.
Help support the Library of Congress and the Congressional offices for each state to garner as much history as possible.
There is a program going
on in various states, Indiana in particular, to make video and audio recordings of veterans' service experiences. Since many older vets are dying rapidly the organizers of the project want to get their histories
on record ASAP. They need story tellers so history won't get lost.
Any of the vets who have watched "History Channel" and seen shows like "Mail Call" and the story of Iwo Jima battles knows how
interesting it is to hear the surviving Marines tell it like it was. Our descendants must remember what it costs to defend freedom for the U.S.A.
Veterans of all service in all wars are invited to participate in this
documentary program and their stories will be forwarded to The Library of Congress for the use of historians and other interested parties.
Here, in Indiana, The Veterans History Project is operating through U.S. Senator
Richard G. Lugar's office with the help of various local libraries and other volunteer interviewers.
Those Indiana veterans who would like to participate in this valuable effort may register with Name, address and
phone number at vetproject@lugar.senate.gov_
or 1180 Market Tower, 10 W.Market St, Indianapolis, IN 46204. Phone is 317 226 5555.
Hope this information is helpful to our Korean War veterans, of which I am one (Sep '50 to Mar '52 with the U.S.Air Force
AC&W Sqdns.)
Thank you for all your good work.

========================================================== 16. Finding the Families, Albuquerque, NM - news article
==========================================================
Hal and I would like to thank Jim Cooper of Albuquerque for calling his paper, The Albuquerque Journal to ask that they do an article on an MIA from Clovis.
A
front page article was run on July 25th that featured 27 MIA from Korea from New Mexico for whom a full accounting has not been accomplished.
Since the article ran, the phone at the Korean War Project has buzzed continually.
Family and friends have called to inquire and to obtain contact information for the Department of Defense Casualty Offices.
In the past hundreds, if not thousands of our newsletter recipients have alerted their local
media to do similar stories with very good results. Why not do so again?
By Thursday our MIA section will be updated with the latest results for DNA samples provided or needed. A big Thank You to all volunteers who take part
in assisting the Korean War Project to bridge the gap.
