Book on B-29 in Korea

I am writing a history of B-29 operations in Korea, to be
published next year by Osprey. The book will be a companion
volume to my title on the B-29 in World War II, which is
being published later this year. I need to hear from
anyone who can help with personal recollections, documents,
and especially the loan of photos.

One purpose of this book will be to recognize every unit
involved in B-29 operations in Korea. To achieve this, I
need your help. If you have photos to lend, I will treat
them with great respect. Please note, however, that I am
looking for the loan of real photos: I can't use digital
images.

4. Royal Leicester's in Korea - Poem

One of our email pals' writes:

I was in the Royal Leicester's in Korea and would like to
contact a chap I knew in "B" company. I cannot remember his
surname but he was called Ron and was a budding poet. I can
remember the last verse of a poem he wrote about
the war. It went:

When this war is over, and the battle has been won,
No more to hear the sound of the mortar and the gun.

We'll bend our heads in prayer, for the lads who fought and
fell,
and are buried in Korea neath the six foot of hell.

I would love him to send me the full poem.

5. Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway - Colorado (38th N)

I wanted to share with you, the recently decided upon
Memorial Highway (in Colorado). It is nice to see another
recognition for those who fought and those who died in
Korea.

...Of even greater interest to me is that, the proposed
Memorial Highway crosses the 38th Parallel, near to the
little town of Moffat, Colorado which sits at 38.1 degrees
North Latitude.

Colorado State Senator Lewis Entz, R-Hooper, has set the
wheels in motion to commemorate the fact that Colorado's San
Louis Valley and the Korean Peninsula, are both crossed by
the 38th Parallel.

Entz, from Hooper, Colorado, sponsored Joint Senate
Resolution 019, which will rename Colorado Highway 17, near
Moffat Colorado, and near to U. S. Highway 285 (the
Gunbarrel) "The Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway". State
Representative Carl Miller D-Leadville sponsored the
Resolution, which passed with just one dissenting vote.

It is of interest that the tiny town of Moffat sits at 38.1
degrees N. Latitude.

Anyone wishing to say thank you to Senator Entz, a Marine
Corps, Korean - Era Veteran, can email to
lewisentz@qwest.net

asking that such a program be put in place for each state

Subject: Marine Corps HO5S-1 Medivac Helicopter

The Connecticut Air and Space Center will be receiving a
Sikorsky HO5S-1 Helicopter from the USMC for restoration and
eventual display. This HO5S-1 was delivered to the USMC in
August 1952. The Bu # is 128610.

Would any of your members have any history on this aircraft?

In the HO5S-1's medivac role, were any of your members
airlifted or had their life saved because of the HO5S-1?
If possible would they have any pictures of the HO5S-1 being
used in Korea?

Could anyone give us a list of units that flew the HO5S-1 in
Korea?

Any help that you might provide would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

Dick Evans

8. 92nd Armored Field Artillery Battalion - PUC awarded

Sec/Treas/Editor 92nd AFA Bn.-Korea

Ted & Hal,
It may be newsworthy to announce that the 92nd Armored Field
Artillery Battalion "Red Devils" has just been awarded the
Presidential Unit Citation for their action in a battle 52
years ago.

They were recognized for their participation in keeping the
pass open at Chinhung-Ni for the 7th Infantry Div and 1st
Marines to exit the Chosen Reservoir.

This action was recently brought to the attention of the
Dept Of The Army by a veteran of this Unit and a member of
Congress. After a lengthy investigation by several
committees ie; Military Awards and Military History, the
Army Chief of Staff authorized the award.

A formal presentation will be made at their annual reunion
in Asheville,N.C. October 15, 2002.

9. National Korean War Veterans Memorial - Cleanup!
==========================================================

Hal and I keep hearing from email pals that the Ntl Memorial
continues to need help with it's appearance and cleanliness.

Neither of us have been to the Memorial since July 1995, so
cannot attest, in person. But, several recent email indicate
that there is an ongoing problem.

We are suggesting that a volunteer group of concerned
citizens in the DC area might form up to assist, possibly
wearing some easily identifiable cap, shirt or vest to
garner interest to the "cause".

Here are excerpts from concerned persons:

a. Mike Bender (a vet)

excerpt... However, on 31 Mar 02 I finally saw the above
subject memorial, which I had wanted to see since its
dedication. Maybe my expectations were too high, but what I
saw did irritate me.

The impression I received was everyone just walked off the
job before the memorial was completed, or since it was
completed, there has been little upkeep.

The Pool was empty, part of the memorial was taped off for
unknown reasons, the tile floor was cracked, some junipers
had died, trash and leaves were mixed among the junipers,
and the whole area just appeared to be unkempt.

From pictures I had seen, I was expecting to see a great
memorial. And it could be great, if it were properly
maintained.

b. Martha M. Boltz

Gentlemen -- please, please, please -- let's find a way to
do something about the Korean Memorial here in DC. I was
there on Father's Day -- the shrubbery is almost all dead
and gone; the care is lacking; the fountain(s) I vaguely
recall are no longer operative. I wish -- and wishin' is
free -- that there was a way of listing the dead or missing
from Korean War in some fashion there. If it were
personalized in some way, people might come. People tend
to pay attention to something where their loved one is
listed.

...I'm not a veteran, only a Marine and Navy Mom, someone
who cares. I do not know the answers and some would say
should not bring up the problem without
one. But the disparity between the two monuments, so close
together yet so dissimilar in appearance, maintenance, and
attention, was striking.

c. Mike Mankin via Joyce Jett
JJett35329@aol.com

excerpt:...

I received this email from a lady friend of mine who lives
outside Washington, D.C. She is a Marine Mom and devoted to
the Corps and us. I have copied her letter here, with her
permission. After reading it, we started talking about the
Korean Memorial and the poor up keep at that memorial and
the way that the Korean Vets are truly forgotten. It has
taken our Nation these many years to remember us. We think
that the Viet Vets should should help the Korean Vets
receive more recognition. We, the Vietnam Era Veterans,
need to bring them along with us. Some how we need to
bring them into the sunlight with us, so they can receive
the well deserved gratitude and rememberance of our Nation.

Joyce writes:

My understanding is: these are the people responsible for
its upkeep.
