Comments: Major Genevieve Smith was a senior Nurse with the 155th Station Hospital enroute to Korea. On July 27, 1950, she was a passenger on a C-47D transport flying from Haneda Air Base to South Korea when it crashed into the ocean about 64 miles southwest of Tokyo, killing 24 crew and passengers. Major Smith was the Chief Nurse assigned to the 155th Station Hospital in Yokohama. The 155th Station Hospital was in the process of providing personnel to the 8076th MASH unit in the Pusan Perimeter area when she died in the crash.

Her likeness is painted on the "Freedom Rock" in Epworth, Iowa. Photo courtesy of Janet Berger of the City of Epworth.

One passenger survived while all others were listed Missing in the 1951 Air Force Accident Report. However, officially her name does not appear on current DOD casualty lists for Korea, or on any official Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency records or requests for DNA from family. None of the others lost in this crash appear on any official casualty listings as Missing, Non-Battle.
