LOOKING FOR VMF(N)-513 CONTACTS & DATA

Joe Thompson wrote on 2008-05-24 12:32:43.0

Comments: My father, Joseph Joe Thompson, was a Marine aviator for 33 yrs and flew in World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam. In Korea he was a MSGT and assigned to VMF(N)-513 and flew in the F3D and F7F as an RO from June 1952 until early February 1953. I have his logbooks and during the Korean War he flew primary with a Major Martin but he also logged time with pilots named: Collins, Conley, Corvi, Dellamano, Kross, Matheson, Matthews, McKamy, Moore, Palfrey, Rushlow, and Schoner.

I am a retired military officer myself and my passionate hobby is flight simulation. I currently write aviation articles for a major online flight simulation site using a desktop simulator program to tell aviation related stories about various aircraft. Normally the stories are fictional but occasionally I write a true story; one such story was about the F3D Skyknight and a flight my father and Major Martin made in the aircraft across the US in April 1952 just before they deployed to Korea. Heres a link to that story: http://www.flightsim.com/cgi/kds?$=main/feature/f3d.htm.

Im currently in the preliminary planning stages of several new articles and one is planned to cover flying a VMF(N)-513 F7F Tigercat in Korean from Kunsan during the period my father was in-country. I plan to also include the F3D in this story.

Anyone with information regarding the actual mission techniques & the crew's cockpit interaction employed by the Flying Nightmare in these two aircraft in Korea in 1952 is encouraged to contact me.

I would also love to hear from anyone who knew my father in Korea or knew one of the pilots that may have flown with my father during that period.

Joe Thompson

Night Fighter Pilots and Radar Operators

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Louis Gundlach wrote on 2008-04-12 10:56:16.0

Comments: I am an active duty Major and F/A-18 pilot. I am doing a thesis for American Military University on USMC night fighters in Korea. This thesis is an detail oriented look at the tactics and techniques used by USMC Pilots and Radar operators during the Korean War.

If you flew the F4U-5N, F7F, or the F-3D and would like to contribute please email me at Crusher18@aol.com or louis.s.gundlach@usmc.mil or respond on this website.

For this paper I do not need just combat experiences. Often training experiences offer tactical insights on how the Marine Corps planned to operate its aircraft that combat experiences do not.

I believe I sent out a request to some of you a year ago. It has been difficult to get AMU to approve this project but they finally have.

Thanks Louis Gundlach Major USMC

Comments: In early 1952 an F7F made apredawn emergency landing at Kimpo (K14) while I was on duty in the tower. The aircraft had struck a "cable trap" while on anight interdiction mission. The starbord engine was disabled from jammed cable wrapped over the wing and trailed 125 feet behind.((real spark show on landing. Cable that was caught in port engine slapped the cockpit with every revolution. The radar operator evacuated immediatly upon landing to assist crash/medics helping the injured pilot I'm not sure if this was a 513 or 514 aircraft but be pleased to know if anyone has further info on this matter.

Comments: My father was Allen R. Semb, who retired from the Marine Corps in 1970. He flew Corsairs with VMF(N)-513 (I think) in Korea. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for actions in Korea. My dad never was one to talk about anything he did while in the Marine Corps, and we -- my mom, Ruth, and his three daughters -- know very little about his life in the Marine Corps.

My father died on July 4, 2000. This week I found his "Flying Nightmares" patch and the letter from the Commandant giving him the DFC. Does anyone have any additional information about my dad? Does anyone know why he received the DFC?

Thanks.

Comments: I served with the Flying Nightmares from April 1952 until April(?) 1953. I was a member of the night ordnance crew, and designed the "Night Ordnance" patch that we wore at the time. It had the same background as the regular squadron patch, but the figure was one of the cartoon crows popular at the time, Jeckell, diving down with a cigar in his beak, and carrying two bombs in his claws. I still have mine. I have a few photos of the night crew and of the aircraft. We were in Kunsan, K8, with MAG-33. I never knew it was transfered to MAG-12. I remember the flare planes, we called them Fat Face, and we appropriated a few of their flare chutes to have "silk sheets" on our bunks! It was the best chow I ever had while in the Corps! Our Mess Sgt. made deals with the Air Force cooks, they loved anything Marine, and we had steak so often we began complaining! You walked in the mess hall, picked your raw steak, (huge!) and walked to the cook at the gridle you chose, Rare, Medium or Well done! The SOS was ground steak! I should have extended my tour, but my Dad was too worried and I didn't want to make him suffer any more. I'd love to hear from any of my old buddies.

Comments: Ted - went bck and got the entire info on this, which may make it to your list too late to be an alert to anyone in terms of letting those who may have known this gentleman make arrangements to be at his furneral on 2/1/02. In any event, here is the entire posting from Sgt. Grit's Newsletter --

BODY OF MARINE FOUND.........................................

The body of Marine M.I.A. Sergeant James V. Harrell has recently been found in South Korea and identified using dental records, his dog tags, and a map.

"Red"Harrell and I were students together at Airborne Intercept Operator school at MCAS Cherry Point,North Carolina in 1952.

We went to Korea together in 1953 to serve as radar operators on Douglas F3D-2 "Skynight" night fighters as members of Marine All Weather Fighter Squadron 513 the "Flying Nightmares".

Red and his pilot,Captain Brown, disappeared while returning to their base at K-8 (Kunsan,South Korea) and were declared missing in action May 30,1953.

As you and your members might expect, our inability to recover the remains of our fellow Marines so that proper burial honors could be rendered has grated on all of us who served with these two fine men.

Now,the remains of Sergeant James V. "Red" Harrell will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery on February 1, 2002 at 1500 hours.

I urge all Marines and former Marines who live in the Washington, D.C. area to attend the burial ceremony for this fallen warrior out of respect to his family.

I'd appreciate it if you choose to spread the word to those on your mailing list.

Ron Stout Former S/Sgt USMC VMF(N) 513 Mag 33 & Burien,WA.

MAG 12 1st MAW 1953-54"

It almost is hard to imagine that we would still be having remains found and recovered this many years later, but even those of us who never knew "Red" Harrell are relieve dthat he's finally home.

Martha

Subject: RE: KWP Guest Book Entry

Ken Partridge here, writing for my friend Anne....

Anne's father, Peter Lambrecht, was a Night Fighter in the Korean War
and is technically listed as killed in hostile action. We found his
record on your database. His family had him declared dead in 1959,
although no remains have ever been found. He dissapeared several years
earlier and was last known to be on an air recon. mission. So even
though he's listed as KIA, he was listed as MIA for a while. Anne has
never been able to find out more on his disappearance.

We think your home page project is a great idea, and are glad more
attention is now being given to MIA/POW's. Are there many more
resources for MIA families to search for information on the Internet
now?
