I have written numerous articles on Marine Operations in the Korean War and am currently finishing up a complete history of Marine F4U Corsair Operations in Korea. I hope the interest in this website continues to grow!

Joe Brennan wrote on 2003-02-12 15:51:11.0

Comments: I am researching air combat operations of USMC squadrons in Korea with aim of writing about it. VMF/VMA-312 had encounters with MiG’s on at least 9 occasions: 21 Apr 1951, 25 Oct ’51, 9, 10 and 29 Sep ’52, 28 Nov ’52, 27 Dec ’52, 4 and 17 Feb ‘53. I’d like to be able to describe each one, including the enemy unit involved, which I’ve been able to identify in some cases. But also I’d like more detail from the –312 side; about any of them, but especially the less “famous” ones (21 Apr 51 Yak encounter and 10 Sep 52 when VMA-312 shot down a MiG, have been well written about though more info can’t hurt). Does anyone know more about these incidents first hand or otherwise?

Comments: Lillian Day, passed away this morning after a brief illness. She was the wife of Major Dick Day (KIA 5/14/45, Kikaiga Shima, Ryuku Islands - Japan) the original squadron commander of VMF-312 (originally known as Day's Knights). Until AUgust of this year she (and her son Rick) had thought that she and Dick were all but forgotten until we stumbled upon various websites dedicated to VMF-312 and VMA-312. To those of you who contacted her and her son, thankyou, thankyou. You made a grand old Marine dame happier than you could imagine, not to mention Rick too.

My Father was with the 12 Marine Air Wing, Squadron 312. His plane was

My father, who died in 1976, was shot down on October 16, 1951 and held
as a POW in Camp 2 until September 4, 1953. He was in the 1st Marine
Air Wing, MAG-12, VMF-312 radio safety.

He was listed as MIA until someone saw a picture of him playing
baseball and recognized him. I think I once saw records saying he was
a cook in the prison camp, but he destroyed all those before his
death.

He never talked about his time as a POW. My sisters and I are
interested in learning more about this time in his life. My mother
thinks there were U.N. troops also being held in that camp and that they
were mostly Irish and Australian.

After release, the surviving men had silver boxes made with all their
names engraved, which my mother still has. I would appreciate hearing
from anyone who knew him.
