CAPTAIN WILLIAM D. SMART - REPLY

Comments: Reply to Captain William D. Smart: My father, R.W. "Bill" McNutt is one of the F4U pilots who flew overhead during your capture and subsequent escape and rescue. I ran across this site as my son Scott, is interested in learning more about his grand-dad. Bill McNutt lives in Centralia, WA, is very active in the community, and I still wouldn't want to wrestle with him!
He lived several years in Alaska as a bush pilot and still maintains a private plane. Please feel free to contact me through Korean War Project if you get this message, and I'll put the two of you in touch. My dad remembers the incident clearly, is proud of taking part, and, of course, very pleased with the successful outcome. I'll try to locate the Leathernecks issue with your story.

VMF/VMA-312 AIR COMBAT

JOE BRENNAN wrote on February 12, 2003

City and State:

Unit:

Service or Relationship: INTERESTED PERSON

Comments: I am researching air combat operations of USMC squadrons in Korea with aim of writing about it. VMF/VMA-312 had encounters with MiG’s on at least 9 occasions: 21 Apr 1951, 25 Oct ’51, 9, 10 and 29 Sep ’52, 28 Nov ’52, 27 Dec ’52, 4 and 17 Feb ‘53. I’d like to be able to describe each one, including the enemy unit involved, which I’ve been able to identify in some cases. But also I’d like more detail from the –312 side; about any of them, but especially the less “famous” ones (21 Apr 51 Yak encounter and 10 Sep 52 when VMA-312 shot down a MiG, have been well written about though more info can’t hurt). Does anyone know more about these incidents first hand or otherwise?

She was the wife of Major Dick Day (KIA 5/14/45, Kikaiga Shima, Ryuku Islands - Japan) the original squadron commander of VMF-312 (originally known as Day's Knights). Until AUgust of this year she (and her son Rick) had thought that she and Dick were all but forgotten until we stumbled upon various websites dedicated to VMF-312 and VMA-312. To those of you who contacted her and her son, thankyou, thankyou. You made a grand old Marine dame happier than you could imagine, not to mention Rick too.
