Comments: When I was a young boy, my father introduced me to Capt Ted Williams before they deployed to Korea. At that time I did not realize what an honor it was to be introduced to one of baseball's best players. In any event, this took place at El Toro MCAS, CA. I don't remember if this was before they went to Korea, or after they returned.

What I want to know is, does anyone remember my father, Joseph Arnaud? He went by the nick name of "Russ". If so, could you let me know? My dad died 20 years ago, however as his son, I feel like it is my duty to get all the information I can on my father's activities in Korea.

Thank you Joe Arnaud, Jr.

Ted Williams F-9F emergency

Gordon Turnbull wrote on 2009-03-21 13:53:04.0

Comments: This refers to an email entry 5818 posted by Nicholas de mien [9 years ago!] on 1999-12-24, re: Ted Williams F9F aircraft hit by ground fire in early 1953.

I served with MTACS-2 for 13 months as an ET from '52 to '53. In early '53, during a close air support mission,

I happened to witness an F9F suddenly take an erratic low altitude flight path after apparently being hit by ground fire while trying to pull up from an air strike on NK positions just east of Panmunjom.

At the time I had no idea who it was or how serious the hit was but we did see some shiny liquid leakage aft on the fuselage.

We learned soon afterward from intelligence reports [bad news travels fast] that it was Captain Ted Williams but that he fortunately had made it back to base [K-3] and survived.

That happened, about this same time of year [early spring], some 56 years ago, when I was just a 22 year old [kid] Marine Corporal. BTW...I revisited South Korea 28 years later in 1980 [at age 50] and was completely amazed to see how the country had rebuilt and prospered.

All that I could recall, from when I left in May 1953, was South Korea's devastation, casualties and poverty from the Korean War, especially after suffering for so many years under Japanese domination before and during WWII.

In 1980, when I witnessed the rebuilding, prosperity and happiness of the people [especially the children] it was a convincing lesson to me that freedom and democracy works every time and that our country's sacrifice of blood and resources makes the world a better place. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who recalls this event, served with MTACS during the war and/or revisited South Korea. Semper Fi. Gordon Turnbull.

Tony Anton wrote on 2006-06-18 20:14:58.0

Comments: I started this to attempt to reply to an old question regarding the death of Captain John Strickland.

We had just arrived in Japan in VMF-311. Corsairs were desperately needed in Korea, and several of were flown to Tokyo to ferry 12 Corsairs to Itami. The brefing for the flight home was so confused, that on takeoff I said to myself that tonight I would make my second bailout. I immediately went into manual lean.

The flight was indeed screwed up. I'll skip all of the mess and get to our approach to Itami.

Our flight had become separated and lost. John and I ended up as a section and finally got a DF steer. We were sucking fumes when I called the base out at our two o'clock. Instead of turning directly toward the airfield, John did a 270 left. As he leveled out he called, "My engne is cutting out." I replied "Good luck, John. I landed with 10 gallons of fuel left.

John didn't make it. He landed short of the runway with his seat belt unfastened. The crash ruptured his heart.

Apparentely. he had begun preparations to bail out and then changed his mind.

Of the twelve corsairs that left Tokyo only nine made it. Our commanding officer, who was on the flight, was relieved of command

Comments: I am researching air combat operations of USMC squadrons in Korea with aim of writing about it. VMF-311 had encounters with MiG’s on at least 5 occasions: 21 July 1951, 25 Sep ’51, 25 Oct ’51, 30 Apr ’52 and 26 Mar ’53. I believe I can identify the MiG units in most or all of the encounters and more details from the VMF-311 side would help me present the complete picture of these actions. Does anyone know more about these or other air combat incidents first hand or otherwise?

Anyone who wants information on the "VMF 311 Association", drop me a

The association is very active, and has annual reunions, in various

go.

I have a large picture of all of the ordnance crew (if I can find it),
and if I do, will gladly send a copy to anyone wanting a copy...(have to
find it first).

We were land based, had F4U panther F9F panther jets. First landed in
Hungnam ( on spelling), then during the retreat, had to go back to

information on VMF-143, the "Ragin' Cajun" squadron out of the US Naval
Air Station at New Orleans; half of this squadron was activated on
March 1, 1951, and sent to Korea for combat missions . . . but did so
perhaps not as VMF-143, but another designation. Do you know how I
might find more information on this squadron? (I have spoken with a
couple of veterans from the squadron, but none have a written history or
historical documents re: the squadron, which is what I am now really
looking for.))

Sincerely,

S. Bernard
