Comments: My father Lt Col Lynn Stewart passed away in March of this year. The service at Arlington cemetery was exceptional. The Marines that talked to us pre-service were outstanding. The time they took to talk to us was very appreciated and the manner that they handled themselves was exceptional. Every aspect of the service showed great respect, thought and investment. My mother was deeply touched. She and I will be forever grateful.

I am looking for any pictures, reports or stories about his time in Korea with VMF-115. Of interest is a picture of his plane that landed short of the runway, and the accompanying report.

Comments: I've completed an art print of a VMF-115 F9F-2 Panther from Pohang in 1952, for the daughter of pilot James Sharp, now deceased. I'd like to add a unit logo to the print. Does anyone have a good unit logo photo or drawing? I have a scan of Sharp's unit patch but it's not very clear. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My mother recently found a little article behind his Marine photo saying he served with the "Able Eagles" squadron of the First Marine Air Wing in Korea. She had absolutely no idea about his history in Korea. The article is from October 1952. I was curious if anybody knew him or knows more about the Able Eagles that they wouldn't mind sharing with me. Comments: I am in the beginning stages of material gathering and researching for a vibrant history of VMF / VMFA 115. I am interested in not only writing the combat history of the Eagles, but also a personal history of the men (and later women) who have made the Silver Eagles what they are.

Any stories, pictures, historical facts that you would be willing to share with me would be greatly appreciated. Proper credit will be given in every example.

I was a Silver Eagle in 1982/ 1983 as a Sergeant of Marines in the Electric Shop.

Comments: I found this site browsing the web and would like to offer any assistance I can from the ready room of the Silver Eagles. I'm a Silver Eagle currently and I have access to old cruise books, pictures, and HQMC squadron history articles if it would help any of you in your endeavors. Please be advised you are welcome to call the ready room at 843 228 7733 and ask for Capt Jindrich "Stich" or Capt Fowler "Clifford" Also, due to limited coffee mess sales and aggressive deployment schedules we've had to resort to an ebay store. You can see it here http://stores.ebay.com/Silver-Eagle-12s-dump_W0QQsspagenameZMEQ3aFQ3aSTQQtZkm

I also noticed that Capt Franklin Hooks posted here back in 2003 to organize the 60th aniv. reunion. I thought I'd pass the word that Capt "Puj" Hooks was killed during a deployment aboard the USS Harry S. Truman Last year. You can read the full story here http://www.usmc.mil/marinelink/mcn2000.nsf/0/593F0DACFB89D67C85256FEA005FDECC?opendocument

Captain Kelly Flew For the Eagles

Bob Kelly wrote on 2003-08-24 02:02:34.0

Comments: Just found the web site. I wanted to pass on a great resource who has an extensive collection of photos and slides. Captain Thomas R. Kelly a/k/a Russ Kelly flew with the eagles in WW ll and Korea. He is my uncle and is 83 living just outside of Chicago. He has been a model role model for all of us. He doesn't talk much about his service but I read in some old newspaper articles that he received the medal of honor for being the only pilot in his squad to sucessfully bomb their target. The other pilots didn't make it. I'm not clear if they aborted or crashed. Anyway, he served the entire time in Korea and has an extensive collection of photos and slides of fellow marines, planes and other base activities. He told me Ted Williams tried to fly for the able eagles in Korea but Ted had alot of ear pressure problems. He is doing OK now but his health is up and down. Sufered a stroke in early 2001 but he's a marine so he battled back. If you're interested he probably can tell you alot and the conversation would be good for him. His phone phone number is 708-442-9194. I'm his nephew Bob Kelly. Good look with your efforts and thank you for all the sacrifices you all made for my generation.

Looking for info about VMF-115 at MCAS Mojave

Comments: I am a historian working with a local group here in Mojave CA to document the history of the town and of the adjacent MCAS Mojave, now the Mojave Airport. We are putting together a "Virtual Museum" on the town's web site at http://www.mojave.ca.us . There's a small-but-growing section on MCAS. A contact wrote the following to me: "One other thing that you might be interested in is VMF(AW) 115. I remembert that when they deployed to MCAF Mojave in the late 50's. They had recently received the new F4D Skyray which was the first Marine Corps aircraft to be equipped with an afterburner. While they were deployed they were required to install a great number of services changes to the aircraft which took over 6 months. This earned them the nickname of 'The Desert Rats'."

I am looking for any further info on this, and would especially love to get scanned photos from anyone who might have them.

Thanks!

Comments: Transferred into VMF 115 Dec.'49 @ Edenton, NC and transferred out August,'52 @ Pohang Dong (K3). Was MOS 6412 and worked in engine shop for entire tour of duty with sqd. Sqd. received the first F9F-2's in the Corps in 1949. At that time we used 115/145 aviation gasoline with a 10% addition of 1100 weight avition oil to lubricate the Vickers designed high pressure fuel pumps on the J42 engine. I don't think jet fuel had been invented at time. In 1951, I believe, jet fuel (JP) became available. We went over to Korea with F9F-4's, J33A-16 engine, switched to used Navy -2's, J42-P6 for interium period, then back to -4's after Allision fixed an impeller problem with the J33. Went into sqd. as corporal (E3) and transferred out a Tsgt.(E6). Promotions were usually fast if you kept your nose clean. Anybody out there that remembers me,"Clem",would like to hear from you. I've still got a squadron patch from that era if anyone wants an email copy, plus possibly some photos if I can find them, and a "Portrex" postcard from Puerto Rico (NAS Roosevelt Roads)1950 vintage. Comments: My dad was a Marine in World War II and the Korean War. He did not fly aircraft but I have run across an 8x10 glossy of a VMF115 with the number 6 on the nose. It was behind another picture in an album and therefore is in excellent shape. I have no idea why he had this picture or what I should do with the picture. His name was John Ferguson if any of you know him I would love to hear from you. If there are any suggestions on what to do with the photo, those suggestions are welcome as well. There is a pilot in the picture and the aircraft is in flight.

I was with the Squardon until they got the F4D Skyrays in 1957 sometime after that they renamed the Squardon as a (Intersepter Sguardon)and changed the number letter, and they were shipped to Japan. While I was a hyd. mech.in the Squardon I cannot rember very many names and would like to contact anyone else that was in during that time,I was discharged in 1957,I would also like to know if VMF115 is still a active Squardon it was great being apart of it and the Corp.

Korea, they did so not as VMF-143, but rather joined VMF-115 and 311.

(I am a history student at Texas A&M and I am looking for historical

March 1, 1951, and sent to Korea for combat missions . . . but did so
perhaps not as VMF-143, but another designation. Do you know how I
might find more information on this squadron? (I have spoken with a

I am looking for some specifics about the death of my father. He is
listed in the archives but I have been unable to get specifics. I
believe he commanded "Able Eagles", 1st Marine Air, Sep 10,1952 when he
and four or five others were killed returning from a strike.

He was flying a Panther jet at the time and I believe he was stationed
at Po Hang (spelling optinal). Would really appreciate any additional
info. I believe he was at Po Hang from July 1952 unil his death Sep 10,
1952. I don't know how many units had P9F Panthers at the time but he
was assigned to a USMCR unit in Providence, RI; activated and went to
Florida prior to going overseas.

Thanks.
