Comments: I have several pictures from my dad's time in Korea. He is standing in front of a Corsair on deck of the USS Sicily. The plane has 12 on the side,WR on the tail, and a nickname on the cowl in front of pilot. The nickname is hard to read but I can almost make out "Rec------ Rebel". If anyone knows anything about the pilot, plane or my father (FN Jewell Timms)...please contact me as we are trying to piece together a tribute to the VMA-312 for display purposes. I'll be happy to e-mail the pictures for anyone's consideration. Also, can anyone supply a good scan of a Korean era VMA-312 patch? Thank you, James

Comments: My grandfather passed quite sometime ago. I don't know much of his achievements, but would like to be able to tell my children (who ask often). Any information on John J. McMasters would be helpfull. He flew in 1943 in Korea as a Flying Sergeant and was shot down. The wing of his plane gashed his leg and he ended up marrying his nurse, my grandmom. But that's about all I know. He flew a Corsair at the time, I think.

I'd also be interested in the side number of his F4U-4B of VMA-312 that he was flying when he was shot down.

Thanks in advance.

Joe Brennan wrote on 2003-02-12 15:49:51.0

Comments: I am researching air combat operations of USMC squadrons in Korea with aim of writing about it. VMF/VMA-312 had encounters with MiG’s on at least 9 occasions: 21 Apr 1951, 25 Oct ’51, 9, 10 and 29 Sep ’52, 28 Nov ’52, 27 Dec ’52, 4 and 17 Feb ‘53. I’d like to be able to describe each one, including the enemy unit involved, which I’ve been able to identify in some cases. But also I’d like more detail from the –312 side; about any of them, but especially the less “famous” ones (21 Apr 51 Yak encounter and 10 Sep 52 when VMA-312 shot down a MiG, have been well written about though more info can’t hurt). Does anyone know more about these incidents first hand or otherwise?

Comments: I am interested in hearing from anyone who can fill me in on the history of U.S.M.C. pilot Capt. Daniel Gillon of VFM 312. I have recieved some of his personal flight gear and uniforms with some general history. I am trying to put his groupings back together for historical exhibit and would appreciate anything for or about him in W.W. 2 or Korea. Looking for insignia that would be appropriate for uniforms or flight gear he may have worn.

MAJ. EARL WINDELL LANGSTON A.K.A. 'PREACHER'

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Rob Mears wrote on 2001-08-30 09:22:43.0

Comments: Maj. Earl Windell "Preacher" Langston was my uncle. He flew active combat sorties with VMF-323 and VMF-312 from June thru September of 1952. He was from the Monroe, Louisiana area.

During WWII he was assigned to VMF-221 aboard the USS Bunker Hill flying F4U-1D's during the 1945 cruise to Okinawa. He had three recorded kills/assists prior to being shot down in late April, 1945. He was returned aboard the USS Bunker Hill just prior to her being struck by two Kamikazes (which put the ship out of the war). He survived to fly helicopters until the late 1960's when he lost his like if a helicopter accident in New Zealand.

His log books show Maj. J.E. Ball signing off on his 'Accident & Flight Rule Violation Record" in October of 1952 as having no violations.

I'd like to hear from anyone who was an active pilot with VMF-312 from June - September 1952, as well as anyone who might have been in contact with Windell "Preacher" Langston in any way, shape, or form. Some of the areas he flew stikes against are typed in my 'Keywords' section below. These locations were right out of his log books. Thanks,

Rob Mears
