Comments: My father was part of G company 3rd battalion, 7th marines. He was in Korea from Dec. 1950-Oct. 1951. I'm looking for information on him. I have a stack of photos he took while in Korea. One photo is of his platoon leader. He wrote on the photo that his name was Tom and that he was killed on the punch bowl operation. He says Tom was a "real Marine. Thanks, Russ Andrews

Comments: SSGT William Ullmann (mispelled Ullman) MIA/KIA July 19, 1953 I CO, 3rd BAT, 7th Marine Reg, 1st Marine Division
Our family knows nothing about what happened to my great-uncle. He was reported MIA for nine months (presumably KIA on July 19, 1953). We would love to hear from anyone who served with or might have know him to help us deal with his loss. He was originally from Wyckoff, NJ and had a sister named Ruth who is still alive.
Please help if you can, any information will be looked at.
Thanks,
Chris Moloney

Comments: I'm looking for my birth father. His name is Robert Lee Bachelder and he was at Jacksonville, N.C., in 1951. He was married to Hope Stevens, and I've been told that she ran away with me, and put me up for adoption without his knowledge or permission. I'm not 100% sure of his information, except that he was stationed there in '51. I believe he was born in Maine,in 1934, and married in Maine on July 7, 1951.

Night Patrol, 7 Oct. 1952, Western Outposts |

Bill Cole wrote on 2009-02-06 12:54:09.0
Comments: On October 7th 1952, I was one of two engineers who went out fairly late on night patrol (about 2300) with members of "I" Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Infantry Regiment. As we moved along in single file, we were ambushed on an unknown (to me) ridge by a Chinese machine gun nest, who had apparently set up earlier in a trench on the crest of the hill. The first blast of the machine gun caused everyone to scatter for cover. I believe a large number of Marines were killed or injured in the first few seconds of the ambush, but it was hard to tell exactly what happened in the dark. However I did realize it was a VERY BAD SITUATION. One wounded guy screamed and moaned for several hours and then all was quiet. Our patrol leader that night was Staff Sergeant Lewis G. Watkins who I found out much later (like a week ago!) won the Medal of Honor that night. This was a complete surprise to me. After spending all night completely pinned down by incoming artillery, mortars, small arms fire, a machine gun etc. things quieted down by dawn and a rescue platoon came out from the MLR and got us (still living) guys out of there. We retrieved rifles, etc off the dead bodies. I assume the infantry rescue platoon retrieved the dead and wounded since I was told to leave the area immediately and get back to safety. An infantryman and myself headed back down the hill to the MLR loaded down with weapons. I heard later that the other engineer was badly wounded, and I understand was evacuated back to the hospital ship. I never saw him again. I never knew any of the infantrymen since we engineers would be driven up to the MLR, given a quick review of the patrol objectives and that would be pretty much it. Since this was my first night patrol, it was all new to me. Luckily I was placed in the rear of the patrol (about 20 of us). That probably saved my life. Well... my point in telling this story is to possibly get in touch with ANYONE from this infantry company who is still around and remembers this specific patrol in October 1952. Someone MUST remember Sgt. Watkins. He seemed like a "bigger than life" character when I met him a few hours before he was killed.

My grandfather (his brother), never stopped trying to find him. My grandfather unfortunately died, which makes my search for information about Albert especially important, since it was my grandfateher's lifelong search for the brother he never heard from again. Albert is listed as KIA, but a body and/or dog tags were never recovered. Please contact me if you knew Albert or have any information. Thank you in advance.

Comments: Leonard "Doc" Warram, served with the Marines in Korea. May have been known as Glen, Len, or Lenny. I know he was at Pusan, Inchon (Walmido), and the Chosin. I have many photographs taken by my father during the war 1950. Most of the photos are of the 1st Marine Div hospital, George Company 3-7, and 1st Amtrack Battalion at Masan. Some body counts of the enemy too. I am willing to share them. Dad was an artist and has a beautiful scrap book of his time in Korea. I think he drew the sketch on the Division Newspaper which was passed out as the unit returned to the states. It looks like his handwriting and is identical to a color sketch on the inside cover of his scrap book which he did. The newspaper also had a letter from Chester Puller and Forrestal.
p.s. Did the 1st Provisional Marines stage a practice landing at Iwo Jima on their way to Pusan?

Robert Leibold wrote on 2004-01-25 13:23:47.0
Comments: Throughout his life, my father said virtually nothing of his service in Korea of more than fifty-years ago--that is, with the exception of the following two items: If a telephone call came for him while he was involved in a televised weekend football game at home, he always advised us, his family, to tell the caller, "No...he's not here just now. He's in Yong-dong Po, and he won't be home until Christmas." Second, upon hearing the all-too-ubiquitous phrase 'Korea: The Forgotten War,' he was inclined to acidly reply, "G-- D--- --! You didn't forget it if you were there!!"
My everlasting respect and gratitude to the men of that bitter, bloody, overlooked war--your profound sacrifices' in Korea were perhaps too many and too severe for the rest of us to even begin to imagine. However, judging in part by the goose-stepping, tommy-gun carrying North Korean troops I saw on television last week--I would be more than willing to say that your presence in Korea a half-century ago was not without reason nor necessity.

Comments: I am looking for information from anyone who may have known my father, Ernest Breeding. He was a wireman and wire team chief in the H&S company of the 3rd Batallion 7th Marines. He was in Korea from Jul 1951 through Aug 1952. I am interested in knowing what he did and how much combat he may have been involved with. Also, what were the typical duties of a wireman and wire chief.

Comments: Re: Weapons Company, 7th Marine Regiment, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines; USMC SGT. Timothy "Root" Young (Korea July 1951- January 1953)
My Father, Sgt. Young, Left the ship USS Newport News, in July, 1951 to go ashore and fight with the Wpns.Co. 3rd Bn 7th. Marines Regiment, 1stMarDiv, in Korea. He was at that time the youngest USMC Sgt. in Korea (He had lied about his age to join them). He fought heroically, receiving a battlefield commission for saving a General's life from machine gun fire. He was selected to represent (carried the colors) the entire 1st Marine Div. in Ike's inaugural Parade. Before leaving Korea, General James A. Van Fleet gave a farewell review to the "collection of heroes" (including Sgt. Young) from the 8th Army who were selected to march in Eisenhower's inaugural parade. Gen. Van Fleet called them "the greatest collection of heroes that perhaps has ever been assembled - significant of a great Army." Does anyone have information on his company's movements from July, 1951 through January, 1953?
Warmest Regards, Dr. Mark E. Young, Sr. DrMarkEYoungSr@aol.com

Comments: My brother and I are looking for information on Donald Turner (our uncle). He was killed manning twin 50Â’s when he couldnÂ’t raise the gun height enough to shoot over the bodies of the enemy and they were over run. Apparently a marine from the 1st Marine Division - either 5th Battalion 7th Regiment or 1st Battalion 7th Regiment related the story to John Charles Cheek "He told me that story one sunny day in the summer of 1953. We sat in the trench outside my bunker, smoked and shot the bull for 15 or 20 minutes. I think he was there to buy a bottle of whiskey from me."
Can anyone help?
My Dad was never able to talk about his favorite brother and we would like to keep the family history intact. Our other Uncle is very old now and would like to hear about Donald.

Comments: While rummaging through some of my father's memorabilia yesterday, I came across a NAVMED 210 Emergency Medical Tag Booklet, and discovered a handful of names which might be familiar to a few of this page's visitors. Sergeant Albert Louis Thompson, USMC, DOB: 7-27-28, was treated by HM3 T.J. Fressie for "Laceration (shrapnel) RT Thumb," on 11-20-51, while a member of G 3/7. Another patient treated by "Doc" Fressie was Private John D. Taylor, USMC, DOB: 10-20-33, who, on 05 Feb '51, was administered morphine for "gunshot wounds to left forearm." Also mentioned in these records are several others' who were variously treated either by Fressie or by my father, HM2 Lowell F. "Lou" Leibold, a member of G 3/7, and a 'retread' from WWII, Operation "Iceberg" (Ryukyu campaign). They are as follows: Cpl Robert L. Creamer; Cpl William R. Christensen; HN Philip Marzolf; PFC Edward L. Murphy; Sgt M.C. Barnes; Sgt M.J. Williams, Sgt T. J. Siva, and HM3 Doyle Powell. The best I can tell, these men were treated for wounds received between 2-51 and 5-52 on or near the Easy Med compound. And to the kind gentleman who contacted me recently, regarding wound verification, I sincerely apologize for having misplaced your message and name; indeed, I hope yours' is one of those listed above. If not, please re-establish contact with me, and I will seek additional information through the VA. Though you were treated by my father for severe head trauma, I've been unable to uncover a listing of the incident in any of Dad's records. Finally, if there exists an outside chance that any of you were with my father while near Shuri Castle, on or around 19-20 June '45, on Okinawa, please feel free to contact me. I am seeking confirmation of a potential Silver Star commendation for Dad, and will be very grateful to gain any additional information that may still be out there. My heartfelt thanks to the owners of this page and to the Marines and Corpsmen who served in 'the land of the morning calm.' My father's last earthly words, issued while the man lay comatose in a Branson, Missouri hospital, in 1994, were reserved for you, and for you alone. Semper Fi--

Comments: For his father, Cpl. George Brodeur, originally from Worcester, Mass., Gary Brodeur writes: I'd like to contact James LaRance of Montana. We were wounded by shrapnel from the same mortar round in Aug.-Sept. 1950. I shipped to Korea with the 1st Provisional Marine regiment 11 July 1950. Landed at Inchon with A Company, 1st SP Btn., then volunteered for duty with H/3/7 prior to the Chosin Reservoir engagement. Fought there and at Wonson. Decorated with Purple Heart twice. Left Korea for medical care in Japan for the second time in Sept. 1950, and returned to Camp Pendelton. If you have information on LaRance or wish to contact me for other reasons, E-mail my son, or write me direct with contact information. Thank you.

Comments: My father's uncle, William J Fano died July 14, 1953 in the Korean War at the age of 24. Due to pathetic interest from family, nobody knows much about his military history. My brother and brother-in-law are in the Marines which has sparked interest in our desire to find out more about this remarkable man. William's family has lost his medals, one of which we are told may be a silver star. To my surprise I found him here listed among the killed in action and was happy to see he was provided with some form of recognition for his service to our country. Thank you!
