Photos available - Koto-ri November 1950 |

Howard Britt wrote on 2009-08-28 13:02:29.0
Comments: Frank Britt, my father, recently died. I have old Korea photographs - which include photos of Marines in and around Koto-Ri, images of the breakout convoys, and the Chosin Resevoir. If you are interested please let me know. It would be great if these are passed on to other family members. I have scanned these into a pdf file and several jpg's.
Dad was a Corpsman serving in Charlie Company of the 7th Regiment. He landed at Inchon, and later on the east cost of Korea for the drive to Chosin. Dad was there when the Chinese attacked in early November. Dad was wounded in combat on November 11 in the hills above Koto-ri. I do not know how he got some of these photos since they were taken after he was evacuated. The breakout came later that month. I also have a photograph of his graduating class for Hospitalmen, April, 1948 as well.
As many here have said, veterans of combat don't speak of their experiences. However, towards the end of Dad's life he collected a whole series of books on the Korean War which I am reading now. Reading these, having seen my Dad's bronze star and Purple Heart, his wound, makes me a very proud son, a humble and grateful American. God bless all of you who served in Korea and might read this!
Howard

Comments: I am attempting to locate any Marine who served with my father Clinton F. Harrington Jr. My father died in 1976 and unfortunately I never was able tp learn any of his Marine Corps history. I know he was awarded the Silver Star as well as the Purple Heart. The best I know he was wounded in December of 1950 near the Cosin Reservoir. Any help or suggestions to help me find this information would be appreciated. I was also a Marine and would like to fill in this chapter in my life as I was 13 when he died.

Comments: Hello -- Does anyone have any documentation proving that the 1st Marine Division, 7th Regiment, Charlie Company served in combat during the Korean War. My father-in-law was recently told by the Pentagon that he is ineligible for the Combat Action Ribbon because he has no proof that he participated in "bona fide ground or surface combat fire fight or action during which he/she was under enemy fire". My father-in-law did indeed serve in combat and was even wounded.
We would appreciate any help that you can offer.

Comments: UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS HEADQUARTERS 1ST MARINE DIVISION (REINF) FMF c/o FLEET POST OFFICE SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA
In the name of the President of the United States, the Commanding General, 1st Marine Division (Reinf) FMF, takes pleasure in awarding the BRONZE STAR MEDAL to
CORPORAL JOHN C. ONTIVEROS UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
"For meritorious achievement in connection with operations against the enemy in KOREA while serving with a Marine infantry company from 7 May 1951 to 30 March 1952.
Serving as a fire team leader, Corporal ONTIVEROS displayed outstanding courage, initiative and devotion to duty.
On one occasion when seriously wounded during an attack on heavily defended enemy positions, he refused evacuation and continued to designate targets and direct the advance of his fire team until forced to be evacuated.
On 17 January 1952 when his company came under a savage attack by a reinforced enemy squad, he left the cover of his bunker, exposing himself with complete disregard for personal safety to intense enemy fire. This action, causing many enemy casualties, assisted in the final repulsing of the attack.
Corporal ONTIVEROS' heroism and fortitude throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
Corporal ONTIVEROS is authorized to wear the Combat "V".
/s/ J.T. SELDON Major General, U.S.Marine Corps Commanding

Comments: Grandpa Dave was a family friend and a mentor to my 14 year old son. I just thought I'd share his Obituary in the event that anyone knew him.
Semper Fidelis. David Robert Jepsen, 76, passed from life to life eternal Thursday, March 17, 2005, at his home in Harrisonville, MO. A Military Memorial Service will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church, 9101 Lamar, Overland Park, KS, on Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at 11 a.m. The family will visit with friends at a luncheon at the church following the services. Interment of ashes will be in Illinois at a future date. "Grampa Dave" was born July 15, 1928, in Oak Park, IL, to David Jepsen of Germany and Rose E. (Haller) Knorr of Forest Park, IL. At age 17, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps to be one of the first to fight. He then reenlisted in the Reserves so as to finish high school; which he did until he was recalled to active duty for the Korean Conflict. After 7+ years, this A-1-7 Marine was honorably discharged in 1953, as a Staff Sergeant and "Chosin Few" survivor. Returning to Maywood, IL, he became an active lifetime member of V.F.W. Post 2193, the Colour Guard Sgt. of the Winfield Scott Rebels Senior Drum and Bugle Corps, the American Legion, the Marine Corps League, the First Marine Division Assoc., the Korean War Veterans Association; the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and the group closest to his heart, an exclusive fraternity of honor: The Chosin Few. Dave became the beloved husband of Joan Clara (nee) Zieman when they were united in marriage on February 20, 1954; living in Maywood for over 45 years. He was employed by Brinks' Inc. in Chicago, where he was a driver/messenger for 31 years. Upon retirement, he actively pursued his second love of Civil War history by becoming a re-enactor and living historian with the 154th Tennessee Senior Vol. Infantry, Co. K, C.S.A. and the Tenth Illinois. After moving to Harrisonville, he was able to continue playing with the 10th Missouri while educating both school children and adults alike, about the war between the states and the daily life of a soldier, whether he was at an event or visiting a school classroom. He was loved by all who met him and his guiding hand and knowledge will be deeply missed, for in him, you could always find a smile and helping hand, which went above and beyond the call of duty for anything you were asking for. His legacy, legend, and "Semper Fi" attitude will be carried on by Jo, his wife of 51 years; by his two strong sons, David Randolph Jepsen of Overland Park, KS, and Carl Michael Jepsen of Petaluma, CA, and his wife, Lisa; and his two grandsons, Christopher and Scotty Jepsen. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the family for distribution to the American Cancer Society; the Chosin Few; and/or the Marine Corps "Semper Fi" Fund for Injured Marines, in care of the funeral home. The few have now become fewer and the proud could not be prouder because of the selfless life lived by this former Marine, as it is said, and true: "Once a marine, Always a Marine!" Dad, we know you are now happily on duty at the gate. Semper Fidelis. (Arrangements: D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS, 913-451-1860) Published in the Kansas City Star on 3/20/2005.

He never spoke of his experience. I didn't even know he was honored as the frozen chosen until after he passed in '97. Comments: I am looking for anyone who may have served with and remember my father - A.J. "Tex" Davidson who was with A/1/7 from September 1950 to November 1951. I do not know which platoon.
He survived the Chosen breakout, but was later wounded on the second day of Operation Ripper in March of 1951. His grandson, USMC 2nd Lt. Jayson Davidson, has a webpage in his memory at www.jaysondavidson.com. His picture is there for anyone that might think they knew him.
My dad's bonds with his Marine brothers never weakened. He passed away recently and the web page is his family's way of honoring him and all the Marines who are members of the Chosen Few.
Thanks for any information you can provide.

Mr. Tinsley, according to my father, also served in World War II and it is believed he was from the New Jersey area originally. Both my father and Mr. Tinsley were in the 1st Marine Division, B Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Regiment.
Any ideas on where to start would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Comments: I am writing to you in hopes anyone can provide information on the Nov 4 1951 battles. My uncle Donald Turner was with the 14th infantry and was killed November 4, 1951. Any help is much appreciated.
A Marine from either either 5th Battalion 7th Regiment or 1st Battalion 7th Regiment confirmed the following story to John C. Cheek and he has included it in his book Stay Safe Buddy.
According to A letter sent to my grand parents he was killed manning twin 50Â’s when he couldnÂ’t raise the gun height enough to shoot over the bodies of the enemy and they were over run. It also spoke of the Chinese wrapping their bodies with ace bandage like material so that even if you hit them it wouldnÂ’t bring them down.
My Dad was never able to talk about his favorite brother and we would like to keep the family history intact.

I was 10yrs old and asked him if he dug like a dog and his answer was "no but we lived like dogs". I never knew until these past months what he meant. His papers with his purple heart notification says 1/3/5 but from all my reading and his statement to me as a child indicates he was "attached" to "DOG or FOX". Does anybody out there remember a tall middle aged man with a moustache and good sense of humor that could drink a fish under the table? Was Veteran of WWII(Raider 4th battalion) have pictures of the men listed below but dated in 53. Following paper trail that indicates he went to the 3rd div,1st battalion,4th marines. He left the Marines in Camp LeJeune in 1956 and left this world in 1963. God Bless the USMC and each of you boys that went to that Hell Hole.

Keywords: The Corpsman needed help carrying a Marine whose left leg had been blown-off at the thigh. We carried him down the hill, across the rice paddy, through the wire to a medical truck. He called-out "I don't want to die" over and over. This Marine was about six feet two inches tall, about 180 pounds, and spoke with a northern metropolitan accent. We told him that he wasn't going to die, and that he was going home now. We didn't have our names on our uniforms in those days. I didn't get his name. I had to carry more ammo and water up the hill again. It would be more than comforting to know that he survived. It was a brief encounter, but it is engraved in my memory forever.

Comments: OSBORN -- Richard Andrew , was born November 15, 1931 and passed away on June 22, 2002. Mr. Osborn was born and raised in Turley and spent most of his life in Tulsa. He graduated from Tulsa Central High School after serving as a Radio Operator in the 1st Battalion of the 7th Marine Corps in the Korean War, attaining the rank of Corporal. Richard was a proud survivor of the Chosin Reservoir Battle, November through December of 1950. He graduated from Okmulgee Technical Institute where he studied Electrical Engineering. Mr. Osborn retired from Seismograph Service Corporation in 1989 after over 30 years of service. He was actively involved in the veterans group the Chosin Few. Richard served the group both as Vice-President and Secretary. Many of his Chosin Few buddies said he was the glue that held the group together. Mr. Osborn is survived by: his wife of almost 49 years, Billie Dee Osborn, Skiatook; 4 children, Karen Osborn Stanford, Rowlett, TX, Richard Andrew Osborn Jr., Broken Arrow, Diane Dallas, Midlothian, VA, and Mark Osborn, Skiatook; 7 grandchildren, Sean and Caitlin Stanford, Amanda and Ryan Dallas, Nathan, Jacob and Erin Osborn; and 2 brothers, Charles and Edward Osborn. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the 1st Marine Division Association Scholarship Fund, 14325 Willard Road #107, Chantilly, VA 20151-2110. Funeral service will be Wednesday, June 26 at 10 a.m. at Butler-Stumpff Funeral Home Chapel, 2103 E. 3rd, Tulsa, 587-7000. Interment will be at Green Acres Memorial Gardens, 12410 N. He is 78 years old now and is still in fairly good health, however he is suffering from dementia, and has trouble remembering all the events of the war. Comments: Trying to tack down anyone who served in my platoon on Bunker Hill. 2nd Platoon C, Co. lst Bat. 7th Marines, lst Mar Div. December 26, 1952, January 14, 1953. After a three year search, Retired LtGeneral Adolph Schwenk submitted OPNAV 1650/3 (Rev. 1-94) with six eye witnesses.
Wording was changed on both Citations and both were reduced. I received the Silver Star and Bronze Star.
I have protested to the Naval Board of Corrections. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Our last reunion was in Palm Springs (29 in 99) with a day spent at 29 Palms with the young Marines of todays 1-7.
Our next reunion is in May of 2001 in Branson MO.

I found his name in the casualties, the first record I've seen of his service other than family records.
The family knows no particulars of his death or the actions in which he was engaged at the time. Any information would be appreciated.

Have been looking for info on my "bracelet" name of Louis Valenciano and seeing all this at your site, is absolutely wonderful. I love the picture of the "Monument" as part of the history. I am wondering tho, what the A1 describes as "Type of Casualty".... I could not find that designation anywhere.
Thanks again Barkers, for the wonderful job you're doing in keeping the Korean War memories alive for our folks who gave of themselves......

Comments: I am researching my uncle, PFC William Walter Wilt of the US
Marines. He was killed in Action Sept. 11, 1951. I am willing to share
information that I have if anyone is interested.
On July 31, 1951, William Walter Wilt was part of the 12th replacement
draft On Sept. 01, 1951, William was with "C" company, 12th replacement
draft, 1st Bn. 7th Marines, 1st Marine Div.
His "record of service" indicates that he was killed in action, Sept.
11, 1951, at Songnap-uong, area Korea, wound missle. Buried Sept.15,
1951 at the United Nations Military Cemetery, Tanggok, Koorea, grave
7396, row 6, plot DDD, Char:Excellent.
His remains were later returned to the US and turned over to the family
on December 07, 1951 at 07:00 AM at the train station in Pitman, New
Jersey. Servfices were held at a later date and his final resting place
is Woodbury Memorial Park, in Gloucester County, New Jersey.
A letter to my Grandmother from John F. McMahon Jr., Capt., USMC "C"
Company Commander, contains the following paragraph in reference to my
Uncle's death.
"Bill" was a B.A.R. man in our third platoon at the time of his fatal
injury. We were making a night attack on the eastern front when we were
subject to heavy mortar fire. It was during this action on 11 September
1951 that "Bill" received his fatal wounds and passed away so quickly
that it was impossible to aid him.

Comments: Enjoyed your web sight. I retired from the Corps on 1Apr70,
with 22 years of service. I was an enlisted Marine for 16 years prior
to receiving my commision.
I served with ACo lstBn 7thMarines in Korea from June, 1951 to September
1951. I was also in H&SCo 1stBn after our operation on hill 673 in the
punchbowl area.
Someone discovered I was an ex 01 and since we were bunked down for the
winter the Bn Adjutant thought I should be back with him typing his
reports. I departed Korea January, 1952 after being overseas since July,
1949. I was stationed at MD, USNS, Subic Bay RPI when I volunteered to
go to Korea as an 03. Former MOS 01.
Keep up the good work and glad we are not still known as the forgotten
ones. "Shifty"
