Comments: WITH THE KOREAN WAR TRUCE ON 27,JULY,1953, AT PANMUNJOM, ENDING THREE YEARS OF FIGHTING IN KOREA, THE US MARINE CORPS LOOKED BACK AT THE PRICE OF LIBERTY IN HUMAN COSTS, WHICH IS ALWAYS HIGH, AND THE KOREAN WAR WAS NO EXCEPTION. US MARINE CASUALTIES TOTALED OVER 30,000; JUST OVER 4,500 US MARINES GAVE THEIR LIVES IN KOREA. FORTY-TWO US MARINES WERE AWARDED "THE MEDAL OF HONOR",FOR HEROISM ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY IN KOREA; TWENTY-SEVEN OF THESE AWARDS WERE POSTHUMOUS. THOUGH SOMETIMES VIEWED AS AN "INDECISIVE" CONFLICT THE US MARINE CORPS CAN TRULY BE PROUD OF IT'S ROLE IN STEMMING THE TIDE OF COMMUNIST AGGRESSION DURING THE KOREAN WAR.

Info on SSGT William Ullman, I Co, 3nd Bat, 7th Marine |

Christopher Moloney wrote on 2009-10-16 20:20:20.0
Comments: I am looking for information that anyone may have on SSGT William Ullmann. SSGT Ullmann was my great uncle. I am trying to find information for our family and SSGT Ullmann's surviving sister, Ruth. We know very little about his time in country, his activities or his friends in the Marine Corp. We would like information on the circumstances surrounding his death. He was MIA for nine months (missing July 19, 1953). He was later confirmed KIA on July 19, 1953. He served with distiction and was wounded six separate times, but returned to fight the enemy. My uncle was an excellent Marine. Please help us learn more about his service by passing this request along to any one you think could help.
SSGT Ullmann was originally from Wyckoff NJ. Enlisted in late 1940s, reenlisted several times until his death in combat. His sisters name is now Ruth Moloney.
Sincerely,
Christopher J Moloney

Details of Haffey's death |
 |
 |
Eddie H. Arechiga wrote on 2009-05-04 18:14:24.0
Comments: I am the former Squad Leader of Haffey's Squad. He was at my side during the attack up Hill 104 and he never wavered as we ran up the hill through intense enemy automatic fire and mortars. Sgt. Robert F. Touchette was hit and fell exposed to enemy fire. He would be dead as soon as the Chinese spotted him. I called to Haffey and we ran out under incredible heavy enemy fire to retrieve Touchette. We got to him and dragged him to a nearby hole. He was in bad shape. Haffey and I ran back to the fight and the enemy machine gunners in a bunker spotted us. They open up on us and I made it back to our original position. Haffey was cut down by the enemy fire. He died instantly. He was one brave and tenactious Marine. Touichette was awarded a Medal but Haffey never received a single award despite the fact that he gave his life to save Touchette.

Comments: Would like to hear from anyone who knew or served with my good friend, Norman "Whitey" Rowe, a/k/a "Dipper Rowe"(Stateside nickname)--especially his buddy PFC George Pastor who was WIA while they served together. I believe he told me he was in the 1/7 Marines, maybe Headquarters. He doesn't talk about it much, but I think it's time we gather all the Korea Vets' stories before it's too late. I did a tour with the Seabees in RVN, so he knows I spent a lot of time with Leathernecks--maybe there's hope he'll come out of his shell! Thanks to all who served in that hell hole. Semper Fi.

Comments: I am a Military History student at UNT and a former Marine. I am doing research on the Marines in the Korean War. I need to interview some Marine veterans of Korea who now live in Tarrant County, TX, or who lived there when they joined the Corps. Any phase of Korea is fine, 1950-1953. It is vital that the memories of those who were there are not left out of the historical record and too many people today forget or never knew what Korea was like. Any help is greatly appreciated Semper Fi --Josh Montandon

He probably went by "Bob", but, like me (a Jr.), he was probably called
"Tom" (or as most corpmen "Doc"). He received the Purple Heart while
serving and his story was that a Chicom grenade went off behind him as
he was pulling another Marine over a log. He did not talk much about
the war, but I got this out of him becuase as a kid I saw the scar
tissue around both ankles and calves and asked how he got that.
He never lived to see the Memorial finally constructed, but since I live
close by I go there often to honor both him and the other men and women
who served and died in Korea.
