Comments: Aloha from the beautiful Big Island!
My dad, Marine Corps T.Sgt. Dale STROPES was killed at Chosin on December 3rd, 1950. He received the NAVY CROSS and SILVER STAR in Korea.
I was born 2 months later, so I never knew my dad and my mother's remembrances have always seemed limited. She is now suffering from severe Alzheimer's, so any chance of learning anything more from her about my father is gone. Also gone are all relatives whoever knew him in Illinois. My older brother was too little to remember Stropes (as he was called).
If you knew my dad, would you PLEASE contact me? I'd be most grateful. Semper Fi.....Sherrill Stropes

I have scanned the album and am willing to share the photos. Does anyone remember a Sgt. Pierce, it was his second tour as he was in WWII also. Uncle Bob and other were shot up pretty bad on a patrol and were retrieved by other marines coming to their aid... Johnny Saunger (Spelling of last name may not be correct) from Cincy was among the rescue party crew.

Kenneth Wooster wrote on 2004-09-01 10:42:20.0
Comments: I have created an unofficial web site for H-3-5 at http://skaneateles.org/H-3-5-Marines/
Featured are many items that I have archived from the H-3-5 Newsletter when "Rats" was editor.
Also included is my memoir of Sgt. Harold E. Riker of H-3-5, who was mortally wounded on 14 February 1951 and died six days later. This memoir contains everything that I have been able to research about the location of H-3-5 during their first arrival in Pusan until about the time of the Pohang Guerrilla Hunt. Although my focus was on Harold, anyone else who was in the company or had loved ones in the company may find my record interesting and useful. Corrections and additions are certainly welcome.
BTW, who has taken up the task of publishing the H-3-5 newsletter? Dick Pelley and his daughter were apparently taking up the job that "Rats" had so faithfully done, but recently I have heard that they have passed the job on to someone else.

Comments: My father, Richard (Dick)Pelley and I publish the H-3-5 Marinenewsletter which "Rats", Jim Ratliffe had originally began. Rats was responsible for finding so many H-3-5ers and reuniting them, some of which I had the pleasure of meeting at the first reunion my Dad and I attended several years ago. This web site was very instrumental in my search for some of my fathers buddies from some 50 odd years ago. I was even able to locate his LT. If there are any H-3-5ers out there still looking to make a connection or find someone who knew your loved one, please email me and we will post the persons name etc. in our newsletter (published 3-4 times a year). We also have access to some of the rosters which may be helpful. Please include as much info as you can (ie. middle initial, city/state of last known residence, year, battles & hill numbers etc). I hope you all find what you're looking for.

My mother said he never talked about his war experiences in much detail and would like to relate the story of why and how we received the Navy Cross to his wife if possible. My mother had a deep felt respect for her friend and was there for him and his wife when he past away in 1992. My father was also in the Korean War and he likewise never talked of his war experiences in much detail. So, any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your replies. -Bobby

I think the story indicates the way things were still done, in some cases, in the so-called Old Corps. -DickG ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It Happened One Sunday
One Sunday morning, sometime I the spring of 1950, about a dozen of us guys were lying around I the barracks at Camp Pendleton. How Company had returned from being stationed in Guam in February and after a typhoon had tried to blow us away. We were given a thirty day leave on a rotation basis, and about a third of the Platoon was on leave at this given time.
I imagine the only reason some of us were in the barracks that Sunday is that some few had laundry to do and the rest of us were probably broke. A Marine base on Sunday seems almost deserted. Most on liberty.
I remember it was sometime after breakfast and before we went to lunch, the squad bay burst open and in walks the C.O., Capt. Fagan. He walked about a third of the way through the bay, stopped, turned around facing the way he had come in, did a quick count and said, “You nine men, get your web gear, your helmet liners, and your rifles off the rack. Make sure you have your dungarees on and fall out in front of the barracks.”
I was one of the nine; shocked thoughts running through our minds but needless to say, we jumped to. In less time than it takes to tell, we had fallen out and fallen in at the front of the barracks. The Captain walked in front of us, stopping and giving each of us two clips of ammo for our rifles. His only orders were—“Lock and load when I tell you and load aboard that covered 6x6.” The truck and driver were parked in the area in front of the barracks.
We climbed aboard and off we went with not the slightest idea where we were going or what we were going to do. Out the back gate, into Oceanside, left onto highway 101, traveling south. I think we must have suggested a hundred things of what was going on, from the sublime to the ridiculous, but as it turned out we were not even close with our speculations.
After about an hour we were in San Diego. Hey! Must be something going on at the MCRD. Nope! We just stayed on the highway and right through San Diego still headed south. After a little while one of the guys said, “We’re coming into T-Town” (Tijuana). All we could think or say—“What the hell!”
We did not stop at the border, just kept on and after a few minutes we did come to a stop. One of the fellows who was sitting in the back next to the tailgate could see a little, and he said, “We’re stopped in front of the jail.”
The Captain came to the back of the truck and said—“Lock and load and I want three of you to line up on the steps on the right, and three of you line up on the same steps on the left and don’t let anyone come in until we come back and the other three of you come with me.” Here we were, six Marines standing guard in Tijuana, Mexico, scared S……. By that time we had figured that the Captain was there to get someone. Sure enough, in five or ten minutes, seemed forever to us six standing outside, out they came, the four that had gone in and two more.
Back in the 6x6 and off we go, through the border gate, back through San Diego and all the way back to Pendleton and our barracks without once stopping in between.
Over the years, I had thought about that incident many times. Today I imagine it would create an international incident and would be in all the newspapers.
After forty years and not seeing anyone from How Company, details were forgotten and I even forgot the names of the two fellows we got out of jail. When I told the story at our first reunion in Wichita, Kansas in 1993, I immediately heard—“Rat’s. You are pulling our leg.” Thank goodness, as soon as I had finished the story one of the fellows sitting there said, “Rat’s, you know who you got out of jail?” I said, “No.” He said, “It was me and Downing.” That was H-3-5 George Kaczmarek and Downing was H-3-5 Bob Downing—and “That’s the rest of the story.”

Comments: I am hoping against all odds here that someone would remember an older Gunny Sgt. Sgt. Elgie H. Wells old retread from WWII and alot older than most of the young guys there. He was one of Col. Currins Raiders in the Solomons and re-enlisted in 1948. He came to Korea in Feb 8,1952 aboard the USS General Weigel. He was wounded the 14 of Aug 1952 so I'm thinking Bunker Hill. I'd like to think someone out there remembers an older 6'2" mean Marine. Maybe he was attached to the 1st Reg. but the papers of his Purple Heart say he was with the 3rd battalion 5th Marines. I just can't find where he was in any battle engagements . Please help if you can. Personell records just stop at 1950 and so I'm left to search on my own for his History with theUSMC for 191/2 years. Thank each of you Korean Vets that read this. Comments: Knew Ralph James' parents, Ralph and Emma. Also Johnny and Jerry, his brothers. My oldest sister and Ralph James (R. J.) were sweethearts for a while. Emma was a wonderful, warm, caring person. She kept in touch with my oldest sister for several years after we moved away. And sent the Jonesboro, Arkansas Newspaper clipping of R. J.'s military funeral. My sister is deceased and I do not have the clipping. Would like to know if R. J. received any war medals, and if not, why not. If the story in the Jonesboro clipping is correct, then R. J. deserves at least one medal.
Keywords: Ralph James (nickname R. J.) joined the Marines at about age 17, (I think I recall that his mother had to sign the papers. He was a member of G Co 3rd Bn 5th Marines. Stationed in Korea, killed by enemy fire August 30, 1950. My family lived behind R. J.s family when I was a young child, then we moved to a farm owned by R.J.'s father near Black Oak, and tenent farmed for his father for about a year or so. Would like to make contact with members of his family, or his GI buddies, or anyone who served with and remember him. Would like to know what happened the day he died. Thanks and God Bless the Korea War Project.

Comments: I am seeking any information on the action at "Chang je' dong" on June 7, 1951. Any an idea of where this is located? Was it near the Hwachon Reservoir? My uncle was KIA. According to the letter to our family this is where he fell. His name was Lawrence Polan, but guys would have calle him "Euty" Hometown Washington, PA. He was a Cpl. Anything you can provide would be helpful. I understand that this was just prior to the Punchbowl -- but I cannot find any information on what was happening during the time frame of June 7. Thank you kindly.

Ira Martin wrote on 2002-12-08 18:25:46.0
Comments: Hello, My name is Ira Martin. I've recently began the task of documenting my Grandfather, Donald Martin "Marty"s involvement in Korea. He arrived in Korea April 1951' He was promoted to sergeant upon arrival and commanded the 1st division 11th regiment 1st Battalion Baker Battery (Gun #4?) and served till the truce talks stalemate July 1952'. Its recently come to my attention He may have fired in support of E-2-5 and or G-3-5. He recieved 6 medals altogether not/inc the new unissued Rok medal. He has yet to receive it. He is interested in any serious contacts from baker battery and any forward observers he might have encountered. He's sad the names are gone from memory; Even then, most were nicknames never to be used again off the Peninsula. I've begun documenting his divisions movements during his service with what limited resources I can get. Any Information or Resources would be greatly appreciated and reciprocal if wanted. I've got a couple maps off the web and some random references to the Marines 11th Artillery in some actual diary like info and military docs. My Grandfather has some amazing stories and even more I'd like Help to unlock. My recent interest has already begun to get things going. If interested or know of my Grandfather please contact me imartin@nycap.rr.com for additional contact info. Any Information will be extremely appreciated. I look forward to a serious response. Sincerely, Ira L Martin

Thanks to anyone who can be of assistance.

Benjamin Baldwin, 38 Division, 2nd Infantry, who was KIA on May 18, 1951 in the Soyang River Battle. Cpl. Chenault sent a letter to my mother dated August 6, 1951 from Inje "North" Korea. If anyone knows Cpl. Chenault or the unit he was with who found the bodies after the battle, please contact me. I would like to get some more history regarding the battle and where, approximately, my uncle and his unit were killed. Sincerely, Carol Baldwin

H/3/5 Embarked on USS HORACE A. BASS APD-124--Inchon Landings |
 |
 |
ROY BAUGHER wrote on 2000-07-28 20:30:40.0
Comments: To all veterans of "How" Company...My name is Roy Baugher III, and I worked at the History Museum of Western Virginia, in Roanoke, VA. I am conducting research on the U.S. Navy ship USS HORACE A. BASS APD-124, its history and the history of its crew and military units embarked on her, especially during the Korean War. The research I am doing is in connection with the Museum's current exhibit, "Ships & Shipmates," with features the histories of the ships named "Roanoke," plus a display of local Roanoke citizens who served, or are currently serving, in the U.S. Navy. One of those Roanoke citizens was Ensign Horace Ancel Bass, Jr., USNR, who was born, raised and lived in Roanoke. Bass was a fighter pilot (Grumman F4F-4 "Wildcat") in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He was in VF-3 at the battle of Midway and in VF-5 at the battle of East Solomon Islands in 1942. He was reportedly shot down at the latter battle and was not recovered from the water. He was declared MIA. Bass was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions at Midway in November 1942, even while listed as MIA. He was then declared presumed dead in 1943. In 1944 the Navy Dept. announced it would name a new fast attack transport in his honor, the USS HORACE A. BASS APD-124. The ship went on to serve in the Okinawa Campaign during WWII and later in the Occupation of Japan afterwards. It would then later see service throughout the entire Korean War. For the landings at Inchon, H Company/3rd Battalion/5th Regiment/1st Division U.S. Marines were embarked on the H.A. BASS, and it was her LCVPs that carried "How" Company in, spearheading 3rd Battalion's assault.
I would like to contact any veterans of "How" Company who were embarked on the H.A. BASS for the Inchon landings, so I can obtain more information about "How" Company's experiences aboard the ship and about the Inchon operation itself. I have written a questionnaire asking about your experiences both on the ship and also about the landings themselves. If you can help and would like to participate, please e-mail me or write to me at: History Museum of Western Virginia, ATTN.: Roy Baugher III, P.O. Box 1904, Roanoke, VA 24008. Any help or information you can give would be deeply appreciated. Thank you for your time and service to this country. I remain, sincerely, Roy Baugher III

located over 300 men and have had four reunions the past our years.
We were in Korea from the get-go, so the period of time we are
concerned with is 1950 to 1953.
I have tried unsuccessfully to obtain the casuality lists from several
different places, Marine Corps Historical, Records Center, etc.
I ran across your name while surfing this morning; any assistance
will be gratefully appreciated . I don't have any place else to search.

Sal Naimo is trying to find the corpman who patched him up in 1951.
The New Jersey veteran was originally assigned to the motor pool with
H Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division,
then was sent to Hill 1120 as a replacement. A motar shell exploded
and sent a hunk of metal into his left knee.
In the heat of battle he was treated by "Doc" Ambrose, a navy corpman
assigned to the Marine Corp unit. "Doc" stabilized Sal, then
transferred him to the USS Constellation.
Sal Naimo has never received his Purple Heart! He has requested copies
of his medical and military records from St.Louis, but the information
is missing about his wounds. He bears the scars, but not the medal.
From the USS Constellation he was transferred to a Navy hospital in
Japan where he remained for 3 weeks before being reassigned to another
unit, also in Japan.
Sal needs to find someone who remembers him (preferably "Doc" Ambrose)
who can verify that he was wounded. He has written to three sitting
presidents about his plight, but has yet to receive any reply.
Sal, a retired police chief now living in Florida, was honorably
discharged in 1952 at the age of 21, and was awarded a presidential
unity citation, and the Korean Medal, but, at the time, didn't think
about the Purple Heart. He wants what is due him. Can anyone out
there help? Anyone?

my outfit, How Co., 3rd Bn. 5th Marines.
Their names are:
Sharpe, Joseph W.,
Tauzell, Richard,
Mendoza, Daniel P.
Becker, Robert R.
If you didn't get it, I'll be glad to try again. It was info concerning
their company, battalion, regiment, squad, etc.
Thanks again,
Sam Bellestri
