Seeking Info on Marine who served in Korea

Jason Pedrick wrote on 2008-09-21 00:32:52.0

Comments: I seeking any veterans who might be able to assist me in researching a Marine who served in Korea from 1951-1954. I came across his war medals and wanted to know more about this Marine and only have so much to go on. All I know is that he was a Sgt in the 5th Marine Regiment, Second Battalion in Dog Company w/ the First Marine Division. His last name may have been Stasi and that about all I have. If there is anyone who might be able to offer some help in finding out more about this Marine or even possibly finding a roster for this particular outfit, I would be greatly appreciative. I look forward to any and all correspondences as I am a former Marine myself serving from 92' - 96' with the 3rd Marine Division. I wish everyone well and Semper Fi.

Comments: I am a son of David V. LaBrie who was section leader of a machine gun platoon(50 cal.), weapons company, 2nd Bat., 5th Marine Reg. He was involved in the fighting for Vegas, Reno, and Carson Hills. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart. He is alive and well today but his memory is going. I am becoming interested in his war history and he and I would be happy if I found some guys he used to serve with him. I found some other names at this site that I thought he might remember but he doesn't recognize any. Maybe some of you remember him. He is from Vermont and went to boot camp at Paris Island. Does anyone know of a regimental history available or roster info? Thanks.

Comments: Looking for any info about my Dad, (passed away Oct 6, 2006)Donald T.Skelton. Never spoke about Korea and I understand why. Actualy found a couple of good books on the time he was in Korea. I used to ask him about Korea and his medals. Only said that, "he lost a lot of good friends" and that, "medals were for Heros and he was not a Hero." He was our Hero though. He was assumed KIA at one point, but was able to get back to MLI. Also offered contract by Brooklyn Dodgers which he turned down so he could serve in the Marines. Hope this might help you in remebering my Dad. Thank You Brian

Corporal Buttery was a 1947 graduate of SSCS and the only serviceman from Sharon to die in Korea. His mother always wished to see a monument in his honor in front of the school. Sadly she died last year at the age of 106 without it ever being placed. Attempting to contact anyone who served with Cpl. Buttery. Additionally we will be honoring 4 servicemen from Sharon who died in WWII. We are also attempting to raise funds. Thank you for any info.

Comments: Comments: I have a book with the following information on Corporal William Shurts.........

THE SINGING MARINE

Corporal William Shurts, 21 of F. Company, 5th Marine Regiment, was hit by a sniper's bullet on a Korean hill. He died the next day. His inspirational singing brought cheer and courage to the trenches. His comrades described him as the "man who brought God to the front lines!" His favorite song was: "The Old Rugged Cross." How this song enheartened the men in the foxholes! Often, they would join with Corporal Shurts on the chorus. Passing from man to man, William spoke quietly to them of faith in God. "After he talked to us," a comrade wrote, "the dark foiled utterly. But for sinners he has a Gospel.

From the Victorious Life by Charles Trumbull.

Comments: My name is Billy Jack Potter, I served in the war in 51 thru 52. My Platoon Sgt Bunch used to call me BJ. I am looking for others who may have served during this time. I remember that one young man was from Arizona was KIA from a sniper but I don't remember his name (possibly William Greer) and I think it happened in the summer of 52, they called the two of us the "Bobsy Twins" and/or the "Kotex Kids". Anyone with ANY information on this time period (3 Oct 51 thru 3 Oct 52) please email my daughter, Jenny.

Looking for a Marine

William E. Houghton wrote on 2005-05-31 00:00:00.0

Comments: September 23,1950 we jumped off our first assault on Seoul. I was in a heavy machinegun platoon assigned to fire overhead support for the assault. I was a section leader which included two squads. After we set up our guns I spotted about a company sized group of the enemy accross the valley from us. We engaged in a firefight with the group and eventually destroyed them. We burned out the barrels on our guns. I told on of my squad leaders sgt Gold to take over while I went for spare barrels. I ran toward the rear and when I dropped into a gulley Where I was met with a Mortar shell. I was blown back and when I regained my senses I heard the sucking sound and I knew I had a chest wound, Looking down I saw I was bleed from the abdomen as well. I called for help and no one came. The first thing I did was pray, I then took off my gear, keeping my Colt .45. I then clasped my hands over my wounds and set out for the rear. I came upon a froup from the ROK Army and fell in front of them and asked them to help me. The first guy ripped my watch from my armn another was digging for my wallet. I saw a large figure appear. It was a Marine with what I thought was a BAR. He convinced the Koreans to carry me to the aid station. He also got my watch and wallet back. I was immediately given blood in both arms and legs. I was then put in a helicopter and flown to Kimpo for a flight to Japan. That Marine saved my life and I've never known who he was. I've submitted letter to a couple magazines and haven't found him. My family and I would like to thank him and maybe share a beer with him. I've managed to live a good life with my family. I'm still doing well as far as health goes. I often think of that Marine hoping he survived the war.

The Search For PFC Paul Tipton Baker, KIA. Where Is He Laid To Rest? Mission Accomplished

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Sherry Lee Bayer (Schuff) wrote on 2005-05-28 00:00:00.0

Comments: Our search was twofold. First, we were looking for family who might still be alive, who were related to Pfc. Baker, and second, find where he was layed to rest.

With our Tennessee friends assistance, we found Pfc. Baker's obithuary in the Chattanooga Newspaper. Our friend Ed tracked down the cemetary where Pfc. Baker was buried. Ed also found Paul's oldest sister, Mrs. Crisp, who resides in Chattanooga.

My Parents were planning a trip to Atlanta, and took a day trip over to Chattanooga. They met with Ed, visited with Mrs. Crisp, who unfortunately is suffering from senility or Alzheimers. She remembered very little and could only find a picture of Paul, when he was six years old.

My parents, then went to Greenwood Cemetary. There, they found the bronze plaque bearing Paul's name, along with his new rank. Cpl. Paul Tipton Baker. My father placed a bronze flag holder with an American Flag and red, white, and blue flower arrangement. He said his prayers to this brave man, thanking him for his life. The story does not end there. Since my Father's visit to Chattanooga, we have done more searching, including what happened after September 24, 1950.

My Father knows that Paul died, not on Sept. 25,1950, as his records with the military say, but September 24, 1950. My Father said, they were just outside of Seoul, when he awoke, stood beside his foxhole, and reached for his weapon. He was instantly shot, the bullet going through his right leg, shattering bone, before entering into his left leg. He said a Marine he vaguely knew, ran over to his side and pulled him into the foxhole. That Marine was Pfc. Baker. My Father said he heard another shot, and Pfc. Baker did not move.

A Medic came to check on Pfc. Baker, pulled him off from my Father, and assisted my father with dressings for his wounds and pain medication. When my Father asked about Pfc. Baker, the Medic shook his head. They were unable to evac my Father for several hours. When they did, they couldn't remove Pfc. Baker's body until the next day.

Also, since the visit to Chattanooga, my Father has talked more about that day. He is receiving counseling for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Through other information from the military, we also found out that Paul's family did not know the circumstances of his death. He is listed as Killed In Action.

The Journey, my Father and I started last fall does not have a Happy Ending. It never will. There is no such thing as closure. There never will be, especially when it comes to War. There is only a search for inner peace, and that can be accomplished with your loved ones.

We continue to search for more of Paul's family, to let them know of Paul's heroic act. We know he had five sisters, who live around the Chattanooga area.

In the meantime, with our help my Father will continue to heal and put his demons to rest.

Keywords: On 10/26/2004, I wrote a message for my Father. We were searching for the grave of Pfc. Paul Tipton Baker.

Pfc. Paul Tipton Baker saved my Fathers life almost 55 years ago, at the risk of his own. Through new friends, including Sid Shown, TNMOPH and Ed Tankesley, from Chattanooga, TN, we were able to accomplish our mission.

I have a real feel for the way he was in civilian life, but I have no idea what he was like the last few months of his life - as a Marine. All I really know is that he was a machine gunner. I am hungry for any information about his friendships, battles, etc. - his war experiences. He was KIA March 29, 1953 by a mortar shell. I don't know where he died. Please share what you know if you knew him.

My father sent a note in 1999 for any family of Pfc Baker with no response. We would like to know more about him and where he is layed to rest. Pfc Baker tended to my fathers wounds, and was mortally wounded in doing so. Pfc Baker is in our thoughts and prayers daily, as I have no doubt, if he did not assist my father that fateful day on September 24, 1950, my father would not be here today, and neither would I.God Bless You

My father passed away 19 April 2004. He talked about the war only after dementia had set in and he was jumping back and forth from the past and present. Never complaining and never talking about those days in Sept 1950 I am curious if there were any of the Marines still around. My father received wounds to his stomach and had his hip and leg shattered. Baker co took heavy casualties that day but I'm hoping somebody is still around to tell the story that my dad couldn't finish. Respectfully, Frank W Dolly Jr

Comments: I am looking for anyone who happened to serve with my uncle during the Korean war, U.S. Marines. I know very little about him and what he did. I would love to learn more!

What I know is, he had died during the war from some sort of illness (disease) that was going through his unit. I do have a few pictures of him with his unit (he appeared to enjoy smoking his pipe). I know before he had enlisted in the "corp" he loved to play the saxophone.

Again, I would like the opportunity to know more about him, so that I maybe able to share it with my children some day. I too served in the military, and would be very interested in finding out about his unit, shipmates, etc.

Thank you.

I arrived during Operation Killer, was assigned to lst Sqd, 2d plt, under Sgt. James Renshaw. Red bearded Capt. Smith was the CO Cdr, Gy Sgt Fristock was the Comp. Gunny (KIA-7Jun51; Navy Cross ),( my Plt Sgt was named Bauer (I think). There was also a Sgt Beeson We had several small firefights until 22 April when the brown hit the fan on the 2d Chinese Offensive, then the race out of the trap, the return fight through Hwachon Resv, into Inje and the stand down on the Banks of the lovely Soyang-gang. Followed by the attacks into the Punchbowl, Hill 812, (Lukes Castle) the "first ever" heliocopter lift on #882, and 2nd Korean winter. The unending 6x6 ride shift to the West Coast and for me in Aril of '52, I was outtathere! Hope I have rung some bells? Hope to hear from anyone. My good friend Clifford D. Colby who went to Easy Co. when we got off the ship has told me about some great re-unions in E/2/5 and I am kinda envious we don't seem to have a D/2/5 reunion. Colby and I stayed pretty close after Korea, and spent two yrs at Mare Island, CA together. Both of us stayed in for career Marines. Have alson been in contact with Jack Kindig, (Silver Star) my old sqd ldr, and On my second tour in Vietnam, as Captain, I had the profound privilege of becoming the Co Cdr of Co. D., 5th Marines. The structural changes from three company battalions to four moved Co. D into the 1st Bn, but what the hell, Co. D is still Dog Company to me. Still trying to Find George Overlock, of Bangor, Maine, Goehle, Lonergan, Fisher

Comments: Hello, My name is Ira Martin. I've recently began the task of documenting my Grandfather, Donald Martin "Marty"s involvement in Korea. He arrived in Korea April 1951' He was promoted to sergeant upon arrival and commanded the 1st division 11th regiment 1st Battalion Baker Battery (Gun #4?) and served till the truce talks stalemate July 1952'. Its recently come to my attention He may have fired in support of E-2-5 and or G-3-5. He recieved 6 medals altogether not/inc the new unissued Rok medal. He has yet to receive it. He is interested in any serious contacts from baker battery and any forward observers he might have encountered. He's sad the names are gone from memory; Even then, most were nicknames never to be used again off the Peninsula. I've begun documenting his divisions movements during his service with what limited resources I can get. Any Information or Resources would be greatly appreciated and reciprocal if wanted. I've got a couple maps off the web and some random references to the Marines 11th Artillery in some actual diary like info and military docs. My Grandfather has some amazing stories and even more I'd like Help to unlock. My recent interest has already begun to get things going. If interested or know of my Grandfather please contact me imartin@nycap.rr.com for additional contact info. Any Information will be extremely appreciated. I look forward to a serious response. Sincerely, Ira L Martin

Comments: I'm submitting this for my father, John Cummings, who would like to hear from any old buddies he served with in Korea or attended as a Navy corpsman, trained with at Great Lakes or perhaps the people he met at Yokosuka while recuperating from his wounds after Chosin.

The following are taken from his notes-any errors are probably mine. He served in the Dog Co, 2nd Battalion, Fifth Marines as a Corpsman 3rd Class under Col. "Chesty" Puller and "Muletrain" Moorehead of the Motor Pool HQ. Landed Pusan, 8/2/50, committed to battle perimeter, on to Teague, Tejan, Miryang Woods, Wolmido Island- Inchon, Kimpo Seoul, then back to 38th Parallel, Hung Nam, Koto-Ri, Roundtop, Chosin Res. Yalu River, retreated back to Ham Hung and finally evacuated on the hospital route ending up at Yokosuka Naval Hospital in Japan, December 8th 1950 where he spent six months recuperating from his wounds and frostbite.

If you served with Dad he'd be delighted to hear from you----Thanks, John Jr.

Comments: Nov 2000 Dear Sirs,

Birthday greetings for your 225th anniversary. I do not know if the occasion will be as elaborate as fireworks at your home, or merely a raised glass, but I hope the day finds you happy and healthy. Please excuse my reliance on a much better writer than myself, but I was thinking of Lincoln’s dedication at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania when he says that the brave men, living and dead, have consecrated the field far above our poor power to add or detract. I too feel inadequate expressing my gratitude and admiration for those engaged above the 38th parallel, this autumn, fifty years ago. And beggar that I am, I am even poor in thanks, but I thank you. I wish my friend, Charlie Durant (F/2/5) and his lovely wife, Barb were still with us but I wanted to remember their generosity and his participation. Although Charlie never said anything to me about Korea; I can’t help but think if I had asked, he would have paused from enjoying his strawberry daiquai and said something like, “It was damn cold”, and probably left it at that. I remain - Your humble servant, Rob Radoslovich P O Box 72 Chadds Ford, Pa 19317

Comments: Semper Fi Marines! I saw these names on the BB and as a former member of D/2/5 in Korea I had to respond. D into the ist Bn, but what the hell, Co. D is still Dog Company to me.

I would like to send out my thanks and that of all young Marines, to all of you vetrans who set the example for all the rest of us to follow. My uncle was also in Korea, but im afraid I do not know with what unit. I hope to never have to go into combat, but if our Corps is once again called to help the country, I can only hope to answer it half as well as you men did. Comments: I am serching, for my father,Charles Beeson, anyone who may remember him and served with him. My father tells many stories of his time in Korea, especially his time around a place he refers to as "Lukes Castle." Must have been one unbelievable time. I am proud that my father served, and was able to come home. I can remember as a young girl seeing a brightly colored red rash on my father's back, and very dry- peeling feet...he used to tell me that he got "the jungle rot while in Korea." Anyway, my point of this letter is to find anyone who may remember him.

My father, Charles R. Beeson, would like for me to try and locate a man by the name Ivan Beeson. Ivan Beeson served with my dad in D/2/5. My father says that Ivan was shipped out of Korea before him. Also, dad says that this Ivan Beeson, he believes, is from Washington State. If you are out there Ivan, please let me know, so that I may let my dad know!

Just email me,then I will be in touch with dad... he still hasnt gotten a computer! Gdabout@aol.com

So if anyone can point me in the right direction with actual accounts of these particular battles or where to look I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you Brian Skelton
