Comments: Dear Johnny, this is your childhood friend from Rego Park, NY. about 1957. We were buddies and paled around with each other all the time. I lived across the street with my family. We had a babysitter named "Ruthie Schwartz" who had C.P. We used to go play where Lefrek City was being built. Once you lost your shoes in a swampy area there. You used to wear your father's jeep cap all the time. I remember that you had alot of sisters. I have been thinking about you and your family all of these years and trying to get in contact with you. I am profoundly affected by the loss of your father in Korea and want you all to know that he is not forgotten. Please contact me. Do you happen to know what happened to Ruthie? Sincerely, Judith Volborth

Comments: I am a Military History student at UNT and a former Marine. I am doing research on the Marines in the Korean War. I need to interview some Marine veterans of Korea who now live in Tarrant County, TX, or who lived there when they joined the Corps. Any phase of Korea is fine, 1950-1953. It is vital that the memories of those who were there are not left out of the historical record and too many people today forget or never knew what Korea was like. Any help is greatly appreciated Semper Fi --Josh Montandon

Baker was from Idaho or Nevada, I can't remember which. We went on all-night patrols in front of the lines and shared a hole in the ground for several months. We were also together at Camp DelMar, CA after we were rotated back to the states. He was famous for his renditions of Al Jolson songs.

I am looking for ANY vets frm the Korean War who live in Florida or S. Georgia who would be interested in telling their stories.
I can send/fax/e-mail an Overview, Script, and Release. AS time passes, veterans depart. I want their stories to be recorded so future generations can learn of their sacrifices. Any assistance you can render will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Flame Dragons of the Korean War |
 |
 |
Jack Carty wrote on 2004-10-02 19:22:40.0
Comments: Flame Dragons of the Korean war is a new book detailing the history of the Flame Platoon, Headquarters Company, First Tank Battalion, First Marine Division. This 344-page, 6x9 hardbound account of a little-known Marine Corps unit details the Platoon's activities from the landing at Wolmi-do prior to the Inchon Invasion on 15 Sept 50 to the cease fire 27 July 53. Co-authored by Flame Tankers Jerry Ravino and Jack Carty, and produced by Turner Publishing Company, Flame Dragons is a first-hand account of how the nine specialized twin-barreled Sherman Tanks spread havoc with their flame guns, and launched devastating artillery with their 105mm howitzers. It is recalled, not only by members of the Flame Platoon, but tankers from other units within the First Tank Battalion and fellow Gyrenes from the Fifth Marines and Seventh Marines who bore witness to it in the trenches and outposts during the three years of the conflict in the Land of the Morning Calm. Combat, fear, death and bravery often were anything but calm among these Marines who shared their personal experiences in this historical revelation. More than 180 pictures, mostly originals from scrapbooks of tankers, supplement the oratory which is supported by declassified records and told within a general history of First Marine Division activity in the war. Flame Dragons of the Korean War retails for $27.95, plus $3.05 shipping. It is available by sending a check or money order to Flames Dragons, P.O. Box 102, Barrington NJ 08007. Excerpts may be reviewed at www.flamedragons.com where Jerry Ravino or Jack Carty also may be contacted.

Looking for Dallas Folsom |

Jeremy Kirk wrote on 2003-12-02 20:09:05.0
Comments: My name is Jeremy Kirk and I am a reporter for Pacific Stars and Stripes in Seoul, South Korea. I wrote a story yesterday about a civic group that dropped off an envelope with alleged human remains and a photograph of a dog tag of Dallas Folsom, a Marine with the 5th Regiment, at Yongsan Garrison, the main U.S. Army base in Seoul.
We found out through the Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office in Washington, D.C. that Dallas Folsom left North Korea on Dec. 12, 1950, on the USS GM Randall. He stayed in the Marines until the mid-1960s, getting out as a staff sergeant.
The group will only say they obtained the remains in China, and the dog tag is still there. They won't tell us how they came in possesion of the bone fragments or photo of the dog tag.
I'd like to find out if anyone knows Dallas Folsom and if he is still living. Please write me back. Thanks! My story should be on the Stars and Stripes web site within a day or so. If you can find it, type in "Dallas Folsom" in the search window and the story should come up. The address is www.stripes.com.
Sincerely, Jeremy Kirk Seoul correspondent Pacific Stars and Stripes www.stripes.com

Comments: Hello, My name is Ira Martin. I've recently began the task of documenting my Grandfather, Donald Martin "Marty"s involvement in Korea. He arrived in Korea April 1951' He was promoted to sergeant upon arrival and commanded the 1st division 11th regiment 1st Battalion Baker Battery (Gun #4?) and served till the truce talks stalemate July 1952'. Its recently come to my attention He may have fired in support of E-2-5 and or G-3-5. He recieved 6 medals altogether not/inc the new unissued Rok medal. He has yet to receive it. He is interested in any serious contacts from baker battery and any forward observers he might have encountered. He's sad the names are gone from memory; Even then, most were nicknames never to be used again off the Peninsula. I've begun documenting his divisions movements during his service with what limited resources I can get. Any Information or Resources would be greatly appreciated and reciprocal if wanted. I've got a couple maps off the web and some random references to the Marines 11th Artillery in some actual diary like info and military docs. My Grandfather has some amazing stories and even more I'd like Help to unlock. My recent interest has already begun to get things going. If interested or know of my Grandfather please contact me imartin@nycap.rr.com for additional contact info. Any Information will be extremely appreciated. I look forward to a serious response. Sincerely, Ira L Martin

5TH MARINE REGIMENT PATCH |

Patsy Morris wrote on 2002-03-25 10:40:00.0
Comments: Good Morning,
I work for the Marine Corps Association in Quantico, VA. I am currently doing a bit of research for one of our members. He has seen a decal being sold as a "5th Marine Regiment" patch replica and wanted to purchase it to show his pride for fallen brothers of all wars. His concern is this: Is there an official USMC 5th Marine Regiment patch? He wanted to display something that was authentic to the Marine Corps. One key point to this interesting patch is that it has 5 "seahorse" type images located in an "x" shape on the patch with the EGA on the top of the patch and "Fifth Marines" at the bottom of it. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank You in advance.

Ran into him when I inquired at the command bunker about where the forward observer bunker was. Captain Mathews had been a school teacher of mine in Maricopa, California before being called up for the Korean War. Have wondered many times what may have become of him. Sgt. Nils V. Ingemansson
On Fri, 28 Aug 1998
Lars-Erik Börjesson Email address wrote:
Hi!
I found this article, from a newspaper:
Sgt. Nils V. Ingemansson, attached to Fourth Recruit Training Battalion
here at the Depot, will receive the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism
while serving as a squad leader with the Fifth Marines, 1st Marine
Division, in Korea on September 6 and 7, 1952.
His citation reads, in part, as follows: "When his unit was attacked by
numerically superior hostile forces while defending a combat outpost
well in advance of the main line of resistance. Sgt. Ingemansson bravely
took up a position on top of a bunker in the face of an intense hostile
artillery and mortar barrage and delivered devastating fire upon the
attackers to prevent the enemy from penetrating his sector of the
perimeter, personally killing 15 of the enemy with rifle fire and
dispersing many others with hand grenades. Sergeant Ingemansson was
directly instrumental in the successful defense of the entire position."
and it showed to be my grandmother's brother.
Is this correct?
