LOOKING TO VERIFY INFORMATION |
| SCOTT HOFFMAN wrote on January 4, 2007 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: I am looking to verify an account of what my father said to me a few years ago. He was a Staff Sargent with the First Marine Division, Motor Transport Association stationed in Korea from about late 1950 to about mid-1952. My father, William J. Hoffman, Jr. and a group of 3 other men were to retrieve a vehicle somewhere near the North Korean border. They ran into several South Korean dressed solders on patrol but my father noticed a North Korean insignia under the collar of the lead solder and shot them all since they were all North Koreans. | DEBBIE MAJOR wrote on July 29, 2004 City and State: CHAPMAN KS Unit: 1ST REGIMENT, ST MARINE DIVISION Service or Relationship: - Comments: My father completed basic in San Diego, graduating in April, 1951. He was with the 27th platoon, 2nd Batt. He was then stationed in Barstow with the motor transport supply outfit. He was on the General John Pope and sailed from San Diego to Japan on Thursday, April 17th 1952. While in Korea with the "motor transport supply outfit" he was pulled to go to NCO training back at Division. In July he returned to the "fuel dump" , but in August he volunteered to go to the front (Bunker Hill) after the 1st Marines "were hit pretty hard". He was aquad leader of the 2nd squad, 3rd platoon, Fax Co. 1st Marines. He claimed to have "12 great men" in his squad. On August 23rd after being ordered by his lietenant back to the command post bunker, he fell under sniper attack a few feet from the post. He was WIA and lost his leg at the age of 19. I am hoping to find someone who knew my father and can tell me anything about this man and the events I have discribed. It would mean a great deal to me.
