Comments: Robert Meade was married to my wife's mother Julia Meade. When Robert passed on 9-1-97, my wife (Vicky) and I moved Julia to California with us. I helped make arrangments for Robert at the LA Veteran's Cemetary. That is when I was privledged to read copies of his Silver Star citation and 3 purple hearts he received in the short time he was in Korea.I never had the privlidge to meet Bob, but I spoke with him on the phone the night before he passed. He was a true warrior, a Marine's Marine. Although his injuries from the war were devestating, he supported Julia, and made an everlasting impression on his step daughter. Keep his memory alive and live on the Marine tradition-he would (and is) very proud.

(Griffin) Siegel is assembling a family memorial about her brother ("Dick") and would deeply appreciate any information concerning events, etc., about E Co-2nd Batt.-7th Regt.-1st Mar. She would be grateful for any contact from anyone who served with her brother "Dick" at any time, but especially during this period.
I enlisted during Korea and also served two tours in Viet Nam. I am a retired soldier, but I am a true believer in "Semper Fi." Thank you.

Comments: My grandfather, Robert "Bob" Craddock was a Marine in the Korean War. He enlisted in either Alabama or Florida and would have trained at Paris Island. We don't know much about his time in Korea. I believe he would have been involved in the Chosin Reservoir campaign, but am not sure. Also, he has a purple heart for some type of injury. He died when I was only 13, and so I never really got to speak with him about his service. Does anyone recognize his name?

My Dad designed the patch for the 1st Radio Company, I remember it from when I was little. I am trying to at least find a copy of that patch. He would like it to be in a collection the VA has in Utah. I may not even be in the right place, but if anyone has any info, please email me. He is not in the best of health & I would really like to find out any & all that I can. He was from Farmington, MI, in San Diego for boot camp & Camp Lejeune, where I was born & discharged from Camp Geiger. He was in from 55 - 63. He also said MOS 2530 2533. I don't know what that means. Thank you for your time, Denise

China Service 1948 |

Bernie Sorrels wrote on 2008-12-02 23:29:54.0
Comments: I have been wondering for many years about this operation. I think in August of 1948 elements from the 1st Marine Brigade stationed on Guam boarded ship in Agana,the USS Bayfield,and I think it was her sister ship the Cavalier. I think they were AKA's or small troop transports and there were a couple destroyers with us but I can't recall their names or numbers.We landed in Tsingtao which is in North China. Scuttlebut had it that our assignment was to provide assistance for the evacuation of civilian dependants who were at the extensive oil fields that Standard Oil Ltd.held in that area. The name of our operation was Battalion Landing Team 9 (BLT9) that was stenciled on all of our supply crates on the Bayfield. I think the numeral "9" was for the 9th Marine Regiment that was on the Cavalier. While there we were billeted in what was called the German Compound which was built by the Germans during WW 2.One of our duties while there was to take Chinese Nationalist troops out to YMCA point and teach them how to use 60 and 81mm mortars. These troops were the good guys then but after the communists took over in 1949 they probably were drafted and used the training against us at the Reservoir almost a year later.We spent Xmas there and loaded out early in January of 1949 without incident.I never did see a civilian on our ship so assumed they were all on the Cavalier.After returning to Guam we were debriefed by telling us that The China Service Medal was authorized and we were issued one.I saw my SRB once but there was no mention of BLT 9 in there.Never did know where the 9th Marines came from or where they went.Over the years I have come to understand how our government works sometimes and have often wondered if the BLT 9 was a forerunner of "covert operations"? It really doesn't matter because I think the only casualty was a sailor was beat up pretty badly by some rickshaw drivers over a disputed fare.If any body out there has a differant view of the mission give me a jingle and we'll fine tune some things.

He never talked about this until close to his death, and then he let me know that he would like to receive the POW medal. We cannot document this since I am told his records were burned in the fire that destroyed several years. There was another Marine take POW at the same time and location. Comments: My "Uncle Kenny", Kenneth Freer served in the Marine Corps. Infantry in Korea. He is a private person and doesn't talk very much about the war. All he has really told me is that he and a buddy were wounded when two grenades were thrown at them and they could only grab one of them to throw back. He has also said that he loved the sound of P-51s flying overhead, "that's a nice sound". My uncle Kenny is a wonderful man, he is soft spoken and always very kind, He is the nicest man that I have ever known. We learned that he is dying of cancer about 3 weeks ago (July 2004). The reason I am posting this is so anyone who may have known Kenny that might want to see him while he is still with us can contact me via email. Kenny has made arrangments to be buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetary in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Anyone Know Peter Richman |

Ellen Richman wrote on 2003-11-28 03:50:13.0
Comments: My father, Peter Richman (DOB 5-30-38), was in the Marines and stationed in Okinawa sometime between 1956 and 1959 (he was shipped out of Fort Pendleton, CA). He saw combat during this period but I am unclear about whether or not his mission was an "official" deployment. I would like to determine his specific unit, etc. and to contact anyone who served with him.
My father's military training appears to be associated with the 1st Force Reconnaissance Company as it was reconfigured after 1954. He was trained in scuba diving (not to mention the five ways to kill someone in hand-to-hand combat)and later did some kind of work with communications decoding. He could have been part of an early 1st Force Recon Company that was deployed to Camp Hauge, Okinawa in 1956, or part of a later 1st Recon that was deployed to Camp Schwab, Okinawa (this later Company was assigned to Force Troops, Fleet Marine Force Pacific, which supported the 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions). But there was also the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalian -- in Okinawa -- that was assigned to the 3rd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. Too much military lingo for me....

He started to tell me that he would deliver messages to other units sometimes crossing over enemy lines. And that he always had nightmares from his time served. Due to the difference in our ages, I really never knew him well until I was grown with a young family. Before I was ever able to sit down and hear his stories of his time in Korea, he died in a car accident. I would very much like to hear from someone who may have known him there, and might be able to share some recollections of that time. I've heard second hand accounts of his stories, but would like to hear from someone who actually knew him. I would like to share them with our now large family. Thank you so much for your assistance!

Comments: My uncle, Frank Mancuso, served in the Korean War with the Marines. I'm not sure of the time frame and I don't know which unit he was with. He was from the Bronx, NY. I was only 7 or 8 years old when he left for war and I remember him as always smiling and happy. When he came home, he hardly ever smiled, moved off to Florida, and we did not hear much from him over the years. He died in a VA hospital in Alabama several years ago, so far from home. If anyone remembers him, please contact me. By the way, you Korean War Veterans have NEVER been forgotten by me.

Comments: I am the daughter of Sgt. James R. Whitaker and would like to know something about my father and his part in the Korean War. All I know is he served in the Marine Corp from 1951 and was injured while jumping into a fox hole and was seriously injured. He had to have one leg amputated and was blinded from the explosion. He was sent to Oxnard, Ca after being wounded for medical treatment. Originally he was from Louisville, Ky and met my mother in 1951, Goshen, In. When he was injured and sent to Oxnard hospital, I was about 1 yr. old, so his injuries happened around late 1952, or early 1953. Anyone knowing him or was there, it would be good hearing any info they may have on him. Thanks to all military personnel who have fought and died to keep our country safe and free.

I think he was in either the 10th or 12th Reg. But again, I am not sure. What I do know, was that their unit was diverted from the war to Okinawa shortly before arrival. I believe he was an FAO in the HH-43 Kamen Husky helicopter. Any info on this unit will be greatly appreciated. My dad's name was Richard E. Swope. He was born in Shadyside OH in 1933. Thank you... In many ways, us daughters lived the war through the flashbacks, nightmares and mental angish that tortured my father. It made us become caring, tolerent, empathetic adults, because we knew how my Dad suffered inside. I am very proud of him and the others that fought for people who couldn't fight for themselves. He died on May 6th, 2002, I know now, his mind is at rest.

Just now beginning to put the picture together and God what a picture it is. Please help if you can. Elgie passed away before I was old enough to understand the word "Marine". He was from Arkansas. Served in the Army at Fort Shafter and was company K boxer before he joined the Marines in 1939..
Please help me know this remarkable man I called Daddy He was wounded in 52 in Korea and was finally discharged at Camp Lejuene in 1956.
Being a Marine in civilian world wasn't easy for him and I never knew until now why. May God bless the "Marines" and their families.

Comments: My father passed away a few months ago at the age of 74. He never talked much about his 18 months in Korea. The only thing he ever really mentioned to me was the cold, and something about spending Christmas 100 or so (I forget how many miles) from Vladivstock(sp) Russia. He had a hard time "coming back down the mountain" as he put it. Adjusting to normal life after the war was difficult for him, not that he'd ever admit it. Well, if anyone out there has any info on this please contact me. Thank you and God bless!

Comments: I'm searching for any information on my deceased father Lt. Col Donald Raymond Chapell. He served for the USMC and from I've been told was involved in intelligence, served in the Korean War and in Vietnam. I also have photos of him on the USS Forrestal. I do not know his unit or what dates he served when. If anyone can lead me in a better direction or provide information I would greatly appreciate it. He died almost 10 years ago and retired in 1973 just before I was born. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetary. Thanks so much! Donald R. Chapell Jr, Alexandria, VA -orphoto@aol.com

Comments: I am a Major in the MC stationed in Okinawa with an obsession for learning as much as I can about the background of the SNCO and officers assigned to the Korean War's 1st Marine Division and their influence on our organization, attitudes, and doctrine. I am convinced that it is their Southern political traditions of self reliance and decentralized government that they carried over into the way we are organized and train which had the greatest impact on our battlefield success. Does anyone besides me see the connection? Can anyone point to some good reference material that may address this thesis? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Maj Grissom

Comments: I have been searching for a former Staff Sergeant Keith Alexander for many years. We met at the "Treetops Bar" in Singapore in the 80's. Keith was my boyfriend then. I supposed to meet up with him in the States but due to some unforseen circumtances we did not meet and lost contact. I met Jeffery White, a friend of Keith's some months later and he told me that Keith has left for US. That was the last I heard anything about him. I have been searching for him since. Until today I am still single in hoping that I might meet him again one day.It would make me a very happy person if one day my wish come true. I would be thankful if anyone can help.

Comments: Dear Sir/Madam;
My sister and I have being trying to reconstruct our father's military record. He was a sergeant in the Marines and probably was in the first group to be shipped to Korea. He participated in the Chosin Basin campaign.
We do not know what his military ID number nor the unit he was in. He has been gone now for approximately 20 years.
We would truly appreciate any information regarding our father. He was born and raised in Havelock, Iowa, and joined the marines at 17 or 18 years of age.

Ronald Richoux wrote on 2001-12-04 20:40:41.0
Comments: The United States Marine Corps Motto is Semper Fidelis (always faithful) The Marines Always Say Semper Fi My wife, Becky, who teaches nursing, recently invited me to one of her classes graduation ceremonies. After the ceremony, she introduced me to one of her favorite students. Her student in turn introduced me to her husband. To my surprise, she introduced me to him as a former Marine. He introduced himself as a sergeant on active duty, whose name is Sylvester Gordon . To my astonishment, he greeted me with a full hug and said, Semper-Fi, brother, Semper-Fi. I backed away a couple of steps, and for the first time, looked into his eyes. He appeared to have just stepped out of a Marine Corps recruiting poster. We made small talk for a few minutes, and then he asked me when and where I had served in the Corps. I informed him that I had been in the long forgotten police action of Korea, with the First Marine Division. He looked at me with a surprised look and said, Sir, in no way have you or the Korean War been forgotten. I know you have not been forgotten in places that matter. Sir, you and Korea have not been forgotten in the Marine Corps. I know all about Inchon and the other great battles. He then looked at me and said something I could not believe. He said, Sir, you honor me with your presence. This was one of the few times in my life I felt as though a thank you was totally inadequate and probably sounded stupid.
We talked for a while, and I then asked him a question. I told him that most of my adult life, people had asked me, What does Semper Fi mean? To tell them it means always faithful leaves out more than it explains. He said, All I can do with that question is to quote what is perhaps an overused phrase. To those who know, no explanation is necessary, and to those who do not, no amount of explanation is enough. However, to me, it means Marines will never return to safety without their wounded and dead comrades. Sir, that, to me, is Semper Fi. I could not answer him. I told him that I was writing a book on the genealogy of my family and that some day I hoped to be able to write what Semper Fi meant to me. He gave me that same great smile and said, Sir, just think about it, and in time, I am certain you will do just that. I do not profess to be a poet, or a writer, but today, for reasons that I will never explain to anyone as long as I live, I have written my definition of Semper Fi.
I have written this in honor of every Marine of the First Marine Division who never returned from Korea. I have written this in memory of you because: © {You Define Semper Fi}
You were all so young when you died and with all my honesty, to this day I never knew why. All of my life I have been haunted as to why it was you and not I. As God is my witness you define Semper Fi.
I saw some of you this very morning at 2:00 a.m. You awakened me from my sleep screaming for help, but as hard as I try I can never reach you. Perhaps its because you look down from your place so high. I know you are seated at the right hand of God, You define Semper Fi.
From my same dream I saw an old man in the mirror of life I questioned him carefully through a nervous cry Why were they all so young when they died? Why was it them and not I? I recognized the old man as myself, and was shocked with his reply. Oh you fool, do you not know why? They were so much greater than you and I. They were picked by God to define Semper Fi.
There are those who tell me that because of war, I am cursed. I tell them, I saw some give it all up only a few years after their birth. Those who tell me I must forget, I just ignore. Do you not see? I must live with their memory all the days of my life because out of it all they were the ones who made the supreme sacrifice I was fortunate enough to have known them in their strife. They were heroes enough to have been picked by God,to define Semper Fi.
I now know that in the twilight of my fall I can live with it all, because once upon a time, in the prime of my youth I knew a few good men who in honor stood tall. They are the few and proud that I have known, who made the sacrifice and answered the call. As long as I live I will always have their picture in my mental file because it is them alone who were picked by God, to define Semper Fi.
