Comments: I am searching for any information, stories, or photos concerning my father Romayne Coontz. He served in the Marine Corp in Korea from Oct-3-51 thru Oct 2-53. Hew rarely will speak of those days, but I want so much to document his service to his country to share one day with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Thank you.

Comments: My father served in korea under the name Elmer Kallos, his real name is George Elmer Garman. He fought and was injured at the battle at Choisen Resevoir. In many ways, us daughters lived the war through the flashbacks, nightmares and mental angish that tortured my father. It made us become caring, tolerent, empathetic adults, because we knew how my Dad suffered inside. I am very proud of him and the others that fought for people who couldn't fight for themselves. He died on May 6th, 2002, I know now, his mind is at rest.

Comments: Lookin for anyone in this unit who might have served with Elgie H. Wells. Old WWII veteran that saw action at Segi Point, Viru Harbor, with Carlson's raiders.
Just now beginning to put the picture together and God what a picture it is. Please help if you can. Elgie passed away before I was old enough to understand the word "Marine". He was from Arkansas. Served in the Army at Fort Shafter and was company K boxer before he joined the Marines in 1939..
Please help me know this remarkable man I called Daddy He was wounded in 52 in Korea and was finally discharged at Camp Lejuene in 1956.
Being a Marine in civilian world wasn't easy for him and I never knew until now why. May God bless the "Marines" and their families.

Otis retired as a Captain, following 3 tours of Viet Nam. Sadly he passed away much to young, but want my daughters to hear/read of his strength, integrity and belief in his country, and feel your stories can speak more than what I can share. I also would like to hear the stories. As a daughter sometimes little is shared with us.

I am working on a book project, utilizing many of the photographs he saved from that period, and am interested in hearing from anyone who may have served with him. The inside of the photo album shows his company during that time was Fox Company, 2 Battalion, 3rd Marine Division. Comments: My father passed away a few months ago at the age of 74. He never talked much about his 18 months in Korea. The only thing he ever really mentioned to me was the cold, and something about spending Christmas 100 or so (I forget how many miles) from Vladivstock(sp) Russia. He had a hard time "coming back down the mountain" as he put it. Adjusting to normal life after the war was difficult for him, not that he'd ever admit it. Well, if anyone out there has any info on this please contact me. Thank you and God bless!

Comments: I am a Major in the MC stationed in Okinawa with an obsession for learning as much as I can about the background of the SNCO and officers assigned to the Korean War's 1st Marine Division and their influence on our organization, attitudes, and doctrine. I am convinced that it is their Southern political traditions of self reliance and decentralized government that they carried over into the way we are organized and train which had the greatest impact on our battlefield success. Does anyone besides me see the connection? Can anyone point to some good reference material that may address this thesis? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Maj Grissom

My sister and I have being trying to reconstruct our father's military record. He was a sergeant in the Marines and probably was in the first group to be shipped to Korea. He participated in the Chosin Basin campaign.
We do not know what his military ID number nor the unit he was in. He has been gone now for approximately 20 years.
We would truly appreciate any information regarding our father. He was born and raised in Havelock, Iowa, and joined the marines at 17 or 18 years of age.

Comments: The United States Marine Corps Motto is Semper Fidelis (always faithful) The Marines Always Say Semper Fi My wife, Becky, who teaches nursing, recently invited me to one of her classes graduation ceremonies. After the ceremony, she introduced me to one of her favorite students. Her student in turn introduced me to her husband. To my surprise, she introduced me to him as a former Marine. He introduced himself as a sergeant on active duty, whose name is Sylvester Gordon . To my astonishment, he greeted me with a full hug and said, Semper-Fi, brother, Semper-Fi. I backed away a couple of steps, and for the first time, looked into his eyes. He appeared to have just stepped out of a Marine Corps recruiting poster. We made small talk for a few minutes, and then he asked me when and where I had served in the Corps. I informed him that I had been in the long forgotten police action of Korea, with the First Marine Division. He looked at me with a surprised look and said, Sir, in no way have you or the Korean War been forgotten. I know you have not been forgotten in places that matter. Sir, you and Korea have not been forgotten in the Marine Corps. I know all about Inchon and the other great battles. He then looked at me and said something I could not believe. He said, Sir, you honor me with your presence. This was one of the few times in my life I felt as though a thank you was totally inadequate and probably sounded stupid.
We talked for a while, and I then asked him a question. I told him that most of my adult life, people had asked me, What does Semper Fi mean? To tell them it means always faithful leaves out more than it explains. He said, All I can do with that question is to quote what is perhaps an overused phrase. To those who know, no explanation is necessary, and to those who do not, no amount of explanation is enough. However, to me, it means Marines will never return to safety without their wounded and dead comrades. Sir, that, to me, is Semper Fi. I could not answer him. I told him that I was writing a book on the genealogy of my family and that some day I hoped to be able to write what Semper Fi meant to me. He gave me that same great smile and said, Sir, just think about it, and in time, I am certain you will do just that. I do not profess to be a poet, or a writer, but today, for reasons that I will never explain to anyone as long as I live, I have written my definition of Semper Fi.
I have written this in honor of every Marine of the First Marine Division who never returned from Korea. I have written this in memory of you because: © {You Define Semper Fi}
You were all so young when you died and with all my honesty, to this day I never knew why. All of my life I have been haunted as to why it was you and not I. As God is my witness you define Semper Fi.
I saw some of you this very morning at 2:00 a.m. You awakened me from my sleep screaming for help, but as hard as I try I can never reach you. Perhaps its because you look down from your place so high. I know you are seated at the right hand of God, You define Semper Fi.
From my same dream I saw an old man in the mirror of life I questioned him carefully through a nervous cry Why were they all so young when they died? Why was it them and not I? I recognized the old man as myself, and was shocked with his reply. Oh you fool, do you not know why? They were so much greater than you and I. They were picked by God to define Semper Fi.
There are those who tell me that because of war, I am cursed. I tell them, I saw some give it all up only a few years after their birth. Those who tell me I must forget, I just ignore. Do you not see? I must live with their memory all the days of my life because out of it all they were the ones who made the supreme sacrifice I was fortunate enough to have known them in their strife. They were heroes enough to have been picked by God,to define Semper Fi.
I now know that in the twilight of my fall I can live with it all, because once upon a time, in the prime of my youth I knew a few good men who in honor stood tall. They are the few and proud that I have known, who made the sacrifice and answered the call. As long as I live I will always have their picture in my mental file because it is them alone who were picked by God, to define Semper Fi.

Comments: I am looking for anyone that may remember my Dad, Gerald (Jerry) Jeremy. He was a U.S. Marine Corp. veteran of the Korean Conflict. He died February 5, 2000. He was a cook. He was a gentle, soft spoken man. He did not talk about the fighting, but shared memories with his 4 children of Holiday menus for his fellow men. He was from Toledo, Ohio. I am attempting to collect information on our family for a geneology record to pass on to generations. I would appreciate any information.
Thank you, Leslie Jeremy Buckens buckensl@aol.com

Comments: I am trying to locate anyone who may have served with my former husband, Dick Smythe, in Korea. He was with the Marines and shipped out of Camp Pendleton. I'm trying to locate papers indicting what division he served with. He passed away in 1994. Our son will soon be 30 is interested learning more about his Father's service in Korea. I realize this is a long-shot, but figured it was worth a try.
Thanks.
