SEARCHING FOR THOSE WHO KNEW ROBERT (BOB) M. GERRITY,(DEC) OR SERV. CO, 1ST ENG. BN, 1ST MARINE DIV |
| MICHAEL J. MILIHRAM wrote on October 21, 2010 City and State: MARTINSBURG WV Unit: USAR, MP CORPS Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: I am searching desperately for information on my Father-in-law, Robert M. Gerrity, who was a Sergeant, E-5. He died in 1999, and his second wife got rid of ALL his pictures, uniforms, medals, his .45 Model 1911, and anything to do with his time in the Marine Corps. She stubbornly and purposely didn't share any of his memorabilia from his service in the Corps with either of her step daughters, or her daughter with Robert(Bob). When I met him in 1996 and started dating his eldest daughter, he told me things about his wartime service in Korea which he hadn't even told his first wife, who died in 1969, his second wife or anyone else in his family. The fact I too was a combat veteran more than likely made the difference. I would like to find out information on his units actions, where they were in Korea from roughly July 1952 till May 1953. I do know he was involved in actions at the Chosin Reservoir. Beyond this, and some details concerning this particular action, I have no knowledge of his time in service. Shortly after the conversation which elicited this information, he was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and passed away in 1999. If anyone knew Robert Gerrity, served with him or has information on where and how to obtain information on his unit, Service Company, 1st Engineer BN, 1st Marine Div., FMF, please let me know. Thank you. Keywords: Gerrity, Robert(Bob) Michael, SGT, clerk typist,Chosin Reservoir, Inchon, USNS General M.C.Meigs, Yokohama, San Diego. |

ABOUT: LTC GEORGE E. PETRO, USMC, RET. (DECEASED) |
| CHUCK WASHBURN wrote on July 31, 2010 City and State: OR Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: PETRO, GEORGE E. Citation: The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to George E. Petro (0-27805), Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy of the United Nations while serving as Commanding Officer of an Anti-Tank Company of the First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces en route to Hamhung, Korea, on 10 December 1950. When a strong, well-organized hostile force ambushed the regimental motor convoy at Sudong-ni, Captain Petro immediately assumed command and, building up fire power with additional machine guns, organized the effective defense of the convoy. Repeatedly braving heavy, accurate enemy small-arms fire, he deployed his men in strategic locations and, undeterred by the difficulty of spotting the well-concealed hostile positions in the darkness, personally directed damaging fire which routed the enemy. At the height of the action, he advanced alone to rescue a severely wounded Marine and subsequently led a patrol in front of the lines to evacuate two casualties and personally captured a prisoner of war. His quick initiative, tactical ability and cool leadership during a serious crisis were contributing factors in the successful repulse of the enemy and in the continued safe passage of the convoy, thereby reflecting the highest credit upon Captain Petro and the United States Naval Service. | JERI WHITEHORN (HILL) wrote on August 10, 2008 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: OTHER Comments: Your presence is requested at a "Unveiling Ceremony" on Aug 16, 2008, at 10:00am, at Glenwood Cemetery, on Washington Ave., Houston, Texas. We will be dedicating and unveiling Sgt Gerald "Jerry" O. Davis' (US Marine Corps) Headstone which we just recently received from the Department of Defense honoring Sgt Davis' actions and death while serving in the Korean War. My name is Jeri Whitehorn, and I am the neice and 'namesake' of Sgt. Gerald "Jerry" O. Davis Jr. My uncle died in what is now "The Forgotten War" on the Chosin Reservoir, Korea, on December 8, 1950. His body was returned to his family on March 21, 1955 and interred at the Glenwood Cemetery with very little fanfare. Due to a 'snafu' at the funeral home, his headstone was never ordered, and since they sold out in the late 1950's or early 1960's, and the family moving away from the area, it was not noticed until late September of 2007 when my father and Jerry's half-brother, Samuel Hill Jr., told me that his body had been returned to the States and buried in Houston. I was very deeply disturbed when I found out that one of our Nation's heroes had been left without being recognized for so long, despite the fact that he's always been my Hero. There have been 53 years of July 4th's, Flag Days, Veteran's Days, and Memorial Days that his grave has been without our country's flag to mark him as one of our heroes. With my father's help, I was able to get some of the information that was needed to order his headstone, but there was no markings regarding his Bronze Star on that paperwork. I called the V.A. in January regarding this information, and in April, received the required paperwork, along with his 'replacement medals'. My Uncle Jerry received not just a Bronze Star, but the Bronze Star with "Combat V", for a valorous deed. His headstone was ordered and subsequently received in July, 2008. On August 16th, my father, my family and I will be escorted to the cemetery by the Brazoria County Cavalry for the unveiling of the headstone and laying a wreath on the grave with all the fanfare that my uncle deserved 53 years ago. Also, in attendance will be the District 5 Marine Corps League, who are sponsoring and orchestrating the event with the generous help of their Commandant, Mr. Charles Ynman; "The Chosin Few", survivors and comrades-at-arms of the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War; The Marine Corps League Color Guard; the Texas President of the Purple Heart Association, Dave Lemec; The Gold Star Mothers; the American Legion Hall Honour Guard of Brazoria County will offer a 3-volley gun salute; the HPD Honour Guard Buglers will play 'TAPS- Echo'; the HFD Pipers will be playing the "Marine Corps Hymn" and "Amazing Grace"; and there will be representatives from Congressman Ron Paul's office as well as many other dignitaries at the ceremony. I would be honoured to have your presence at the ceremony to honour my Uncle Jerry for posterity's sake. Keywords: Gerald "Jerry" O. LOOKING FOR ANYONE WHO KNEW LOREN STEELE, WICHITA, KANSAS |
| MATTHEW TENER wrote on February 7, 2008 City and State: DOVER DE Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: Hello, My name is Matt Tener, and I'm looking for anyone who knew my wife's grandfather Loren Steele from Wichita, Ks. I know he was in the Marine's in Korea, unfortunately, that's about it. I've tried numerous times to find out more about his experience, but he will not talk about it to this day. The only time he ever confided in me, was in telling a story about needing an emergency appendectomy at Camp Pendleton. My father-in-law says the he was in the 1st Division, and operated a machine gun, but I have no idea who he served with and where specifically. I am finding out more and more about what the conditions were like in Korea, and my respect for Korean War veterans grows. I know that those soldiers came home to indifference, when they should have had a hero's welcome. I am proud to know at least one Korean veteran, and I hope one day, he can get those demons out of his past and into the light. I know what those soldiers went through was beyond belief but I, along with many others, appreciate it. Thank you to all those that have served in the defense of this great nation and in the defense of democracy. Sincerely, Matt Tener Keywords: Korea |
