James W. Mullis is/was my father. I do know that he was badly wounded and sent to Quam for shrapnel to the stomach and right leg. They did not think that he was going to make, but he did. Please help me pass on his background. Thank you, Adona Schaefer

Comments: My father-in-law was Leo Leach. We recently found books he highlighted with his dates of service and hand written details on the battlefields in the Chosin Reservoir area. We think he was there but all he would say is he was in Japan during the Korean War and that his job was to kill Chinese. He was in an artillery unit. Do you know him?

Comments: I have in my possession my fathers picture album for his time in Korea. He was the Co. Gunny for Weapons Co 3/1 during the Korean war, I'm not sure which platoon. His name is Aaron Lee Clemons, and probably went by "Clem". If anyone served with him and would like to see/have copies of these photos I'd be happy to get them to you. A few are labeled on the back, there are a couple of the whole platoon, and many of individuals, most of the labeled.

Of course, it would be even better if someone who knew him would contact me. I know that Marvin was wounded while his machine-gun position on the forward slope was over-run. I suppose the most pressing thing I would like to know is how long did he live, after being wounded?

Comments: I knew Olen Myers from Camp Pendleton, Ca. onto Korea 1952. He was with the ist MarReg,!st Marine Div.. We became great friends when we were taking Inf training at Camp Pendleton, Ca. and also at Pickle Meadows, Nev taking cold weather training. We were snowed in there as we were about to leave and was stranded for several days. When we finally got back to Camp Pendleton we sailed to Korea on the Gen. William S. Weigel stopped off in Japan to leave gear and then onto Inshon korea where we were assigned to various Marine Org. Olen was assigned to different organizations but we saw each other several times. In fact he and I at supper together at 1st Mar Div Hdq. the night, ethier the day or next day before he was KIA. He was a great musician and they put on several shows for the Marines that year. i HAVE TRIED FOR SEVERAL YEARS TO FIND SOME INFORMATION ABOUT HIM. i WAS CHECKING ON MY COMPUTER TONIGHT (!/30/05) AND FOUND THIS ON THE WEB SITE kOREAN wAR PROJECT i SURE WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM SOME OF HIS RELATIVES OR FRIENDS.

The Marines Administer Good Medicine

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Gary Hall wrote on 2004-12-24 04:12:48.0

Comments: The Marines Administer Good Medicine

In December, 1947 I was standing at attention as best I could in a newly formed recruit platoon at MCRD San Diego. The Drill Instructor was SSgt Douglas D. Gardner, fully caporizoned with 2 hash marks and the recognition and awards associated with combat in the South Pacific. The several history books I have since read all tell me "he entered into captivity" on Wake Island on 23 December, 1941 and spent the next 44 months as a POW of the Japanese. SSgt Gardner had in abundance what I later learned to be called "command lpresence". In any circumstance, social, civil or brutal, you appreciated being on his side. I didn't have much going for me and worse, didn't even realize my several limitations. Sgt Gardner said "Hall, you are uneducated, undisciplined and unmotivated and we have a place for guys like you". This for me was my first dose of Marine Corps medicine and in time I came to understand, appreciate and recommend it. For the next 5 years my place was to pick up trash and march with an M-1 rifle, the best medicine anyone ever took. Tlhe Marine Corps demands that all Marines learn to fire a rifle. At that time it was the US Rifle cal. 30 M-1. In boot camp I sincerely wanted to qualify as an Expert Rifleman but the best I could come up with was Marksman, that is barely qualified. Once a year we all had to requalify with our rifles, "snapping in" for 8 hours each day for 2 weeks. This was all prior to being allowed to fire a single round on the range. The second year I managed to make Sharpshooter, still being unable to qualify as Expert. During the summer of 1950, my 3rd year in the Corps it came to once again requalify. After completing the 2 weeks of snapping in we went back to the range to fire for record. As we started off with slow fire prone position on the 500 yard line Gunny (Tech Sgt) Roy Kastner was running the range and watching the butts with his binoculars. Gunny Kastner was cut out of the same good cloth as was SSgt Gardner, that is he also had all the attributes expected of the best of the Marines. I remember he also the grandest handlebar mustache possible, about 8 inches wide. Gunny joined the Marines about 1938 and served in the South Pacific.

After finishing on the 500 and 300 yard lines and preparing to fire the last rounds of rapid fire prone I had been mentally keeping score and I knew that if I got 'em all in the black I had become an Expert Rifleman, which was an automnatic $5 a month raise in pay. After the final firing I felt pretty good as the targets were lowered in the butts for marking. When the targets were raised for scoring, I had indeed put them all in the black. Gunny Kastner, standing alongside me said "Nice shooting Hall". I have never forgotten the "attaboy", the only one I received in 5 years in the Marines. Thanks Gunny, the Marines are not known for effusive outpourings. Another dollop of the good medicine.

Just a few days later we were on our way to Korea, where I was given the good job as ammo carrier in W-3-1, 1st Mar. Div. The 1st Marines were commanded by Chesty Puller, the 5th Marines by Raymond Murray and Col. Homer Litzenberger had the 7th Marines.

LTGEN Raymond Murray passed away on Veterans Day, 11 November, of this year 2004. In his obituary it was said he wanted to be a teacher, having graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in English. He was one of the very best. I was privileged to be among those in the Hagaru perimeter during the 1st week of Dec., 1950 when Col. Murray led his 5th Marines into our lines, marching in step, in formation, in 40 below zero weather, in the middle of the night.

After Korea, I went to the 6th Marines of the 2nd Marine Division and finished out my time. In the 6th Marines there was a Navy Full LT Chaplain, whose name I regret to say has become lost. I remember this good officer because at every service he concluded with prophetic, memorable quote from the work of Alexis de Tocqueville in the 1830's: "America is great because America is good and should America ever cease to be good America will cease to be great". I am aware that many scholars have denied he wrote this. I have read several of the editions, versions and translations of the original French "Democracy in America" and that conclusion is to be found in the original unabridged edition of the Author.

Epilog.

Sometime in 1958 while attending the University of Texas I began experiencing troubling headaches while studying. I had an eye examination and learned I had astigmatism and other eye weaknesses. When I put on my first pair of glasses at age 27 I was astounded. I then understood why I could not hit a baseball and why I had such trouble in target shooting. I had been swinging the bat and pointing a rifle where the ball and target was not. So the intensive training on the rifle ranges, the snapping in and zeroing of the weapon resulted in compensating for unknown and unrecognized eye defects, just as discipline corrects and compensates for other human traits and failings. An integral part of discipline in any circumstance is to always look around and be aware of what's going on in your area. In simplest and crudest terms, never leave your rear end sticking out.

It is my belief that the good medicine of the Marine Corps has derived from the origins of our Country in 1620 by the declarations written in the Mayflower Compact by those 40 odd Pilgrim Fathers, before they stepped off the boat, wherein they declared America would be founded as a Christian Nation.

The Marine Corps medicine consists of wisdom, discipline and intense training. I recommend it.

I am thankful for my Marine Corps experiences. It was time well spent.

Remembering Chesty Puller

gary hall wrote on 2004-07-29 17:22:42.0

Comments: After having lived long enough to wake up, I'm thankful I knew you, Col (Gen) Puller. Of the many honors and benefits of having served in the Marine Corps was, as I prefer to phrase it "having worked for" then Col. Chesty Puller in W-3-1 from August, 1950 to Sept., 1951, in Korea. Regretfully only years later did I begin to fully realize what a great leader of men he was. He was not one of the "perfumed princes" operating remotely from the rear as described by David Hackworth in his books. However I have evidence here to tell you he must have been one of those leaders Col. T. R. Fehrenback describes in his book "This Kind of War", one who "had the courage to make the hard decisions to make the troops always do the difficult yet correct thing". The long list of 5 Navy Crosses awarded Col. Puller should have been at least6 awards from considering the following example I witnessed during Sept., 1950. The time frame was during the 1st Marine Regiment advance from Inchon and prior to taking Seoul (1st time), in 1950. When I say I worked for Col. Puller, I was an ammunition carrier in W-3-1 (a pack mule actually), and now a days am thankful for the experience. Any way we moved out early one Sept. morning advancing toward Seoul and began to take some small arms fire. Instantly the whole front line took cover, we were in a potato field at the time and a road was about 10 yards to my left, with a line of vehicles and a tank at the front of the column. Everything stopped, including the tank, engines idling. I was safely prone behind some cover in the potato field, feeling secure as I watched the rounds spatter off the road and sides of the tank when I noticed an individual walking forward at a brisk 120, wondering who the poor soul was, a new replacement, some 2nd Lt, or who, steadily coming forward from about 500 yards to the rear. As he got closer I suddenly noted sunlight reflecting off his insignia. As he kept coming forward, rounds were spattering off the road and vehicles and he appeared not to notice, looking grimly straight ahead. As he passed directly by me about 10 yards away, I saw he was a full Colonel, Col. L. B. Puller, his self. He stopped at the rear of the tank, which had a telephone mounted above the right track, and jerked up the phone. I couldn't hear what he said but I remember instantly the tank belched out black exhaust smoke and dug out forward. And likewise, we all, (the 1st Mar Reg't) were moving forward. Yes, I'm indeed thankful I knew you, Col. Puller.

Comments: Ladies & Gentlemen: I still have vivid recollections of Cpl (I believe) Barnes, whom I saw killed on the beach the day of the landing. I should say up front my memory of him was that he displayed the highest qualities of discipline, dedication and devotion, and yet I was in his presence only about a total of 5 minutes of our lives. I recall it this way: We (G-3-1 and W-3-1) rode over from Kobe, Japan to the beaches at Inchon, on an LST given to the Japanese, (it was sailed by a Japanese crew); the Japanese in turn loaned it back to us for the landing. As we entered the landing area the Corsairs and Naval Gunfire were doing their good work, this about 1500 hours, 9-15-50. We were finishing loading up in the LVT's in the tank deck of the LST, and the diesel smoke was something else. Just before I climbed into the LVT I made a last stop in the head. Inside, working by himself was Cpl Barnes, ensuring the facility was left in good order, and as we made brief eye contact I thought "Barnes, I should be doing this for you.", I consider this to be one of the more responsible acts of my unworthy lifetime. Just a very short time later, as we climbed out of the tractors, I saw Barnes, about 50 yards ahead of us on the beach, standing up fully exposed, cutting the barbed wire, for the rest of us. At that instant, he was shot and killed, 50 yards onto the beach, in the first hour of the first day of the invasion. I am thankful I briefly knew him and hope somehow he has passed along to posterity some of his good genes. Kindest regards, Gary Hall PFC 633178

Webster-Nash matter, Korea, 1950

Gary Hall wrote on 2004-07-26 18:34:48.0

Comments: Ladies & Gentlemen: Am requesting any information, input, about the following event: During Dec 1950 I was attached to G-3-1 in Korea. G-3-1 had a sector of the perimeter on the north side of Hagaru, just south of the Chosin Res. After the 5th & 7th Marines had advanced into our lines, we advanced 9 miles down the hill and shortly thereafter G-3-1 was given the assignment to take some high ground just south leaving Koto-ri. We moved out and took the hill and as we were preparing to get set up for the night in subzero weather and 2-3 feet of snow on frozen ground, we noted some abandoned positions and moved in. I was in a hole about 30 yards from Given Webster's and Marine Nash's light 30. Web was the gunner and Nash was his assistant. I went up the hill with them and was never more than 30 yards away from them, at all times. During the night it was snowing, about midnight Web began firing and continued off and on most of the night. In my sector, I never saw anything and never fired a shot. John Collier had his 60 mortars set up behind and between Web and myself. At daybreak the firing had stopped and I went over to Web's position and I was much surprised at noting 30-50 enemy dead right in front of Web's gun. We talked a minute, Nash had been killed, the only casualty. Sometime that afternoon, we saddled up and moved out, advancing to the sea. Would appreciate any first hand comments about any of this. (Webster has never been given any recognition for this most memorable event, and I didn't know this for over 50 years, then quite accidentally). Would much appreciate any help in straightening this out. Kindest regards, Gary Hall PFC W-3-1 (1st Mar Div) North Korea, 1950-1951.

Comments: My Name is Robert (Bob) Bedgood,

I was attached to Item Co 3rd Bn 1st Marine Regt, 1st Marine Division, '50-'51.

Machine Guns, 2nd Squad, with the 2nd platoon, if memory is still working.

I am trying to put together a contact list of other Item company personnel during this period. Please help me if you can.

I am NOT writing a book, memoirs, or any such thing. I'm just trying to find as many as I can. If practical, possibly a future reunion.

My goal originally was to find my fellow squad members, but these things have a way of growing.

I am asking for Name, Address, Phone #, Email Address, and if you will a short outline of your life after Korea. If you have any knowledge of others I would appreciate that as well. Please pass the word .

I have been in touch with several and am still looking. If you can use email, I would appreciate that. I am so shaky that my hand writing is almost unreadable.

My address is:

Comments: Looking for any infomation on Item company operations during the Chosin Reservoir campaign. My uncle Melvin Thompson was a PFC in Item Company at that time, and his neice (my daughter) is doing a school project on him. What would be great if anyone knows of the offical Marine history, where I can purchase it, etc. All the current books give a great description of the campaign, but all are sorely lacking in the area of maps and chronological timeline. Email at this address or my work of rcunningham@providence.org. Many thanks in advance.

For those interested, Mel is still alive and living in Oceanside California, after 26 years on active duty.

Comments: My dad, Charles (Challie, Charlie) J. Lerch, was a Marine in the Korean Conflict, 1st Reg. 3rd Bat. 1st Div. How Company. He lives in Rockland County, New York, and enlisted 11/10/50 out of West Nyack, New York. Went to Parris Island (boot camp) then on to Camp Pendleton for advanced training. Then on the Pussan, Korea by way of the U.S.S. Medavy. He was WIA (shrapnel in his thigh); they patched him up and sent him back out until '53. Came home on a Merchant Marine destroyer ship General Black. My dad, would love to hear from anyone he was in Korea with. He could be reached through my e-mail address: SharleighL@AOL.com. May God Bless you all!

He won't say any thing about the Marines except they were a fighting unit, and " I don't want to talk about it" He has always been a moody person and quick tempered, I just wonder if something happened ? I am in need of information about a KIA from the Korean War.I will
identify the person as best as I can. If I may individually search a
list/database, please inform me with the www address or the ftp
address.

Person: Robert Smith :
USMC 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.
Located on the western front of the Korean battleground. He was
killed somtime in the fall of 1952 (but I don't think so) more
likely it occurred in the spring of 1953. I need to find his Marine
Corps Serial Number and or Social Security Number.

I know that he was from Billings Montana and was stationed at the
M.C.R.D. in San Diego, California prior to being assigned to Korea.
Please send me email.

----more from KWP----

I am forwarding the information on one of many Robert Smith's. Most
are USA. There are 3 USMC KIA 1.Robert Eugene 2. Robert L *, 3.
Robert William.

Robert L is from Billings.

Ted,
I have another set of lookups that I hope are easier than Robert
Smith. These additional names are other Marines that I have beed able
to jolt out of my rustic memory. Any information will help.

1. Gordon Bess, I only remember that he is the author of the comic
strip titled "Redeye".

2. Stanley Hunsaker, from somewhere in South Dakota

3. Lenneth Bland, from Yoakum, Texas

4. Ishmail Garcia , no information that I can remember and I am not
sure of the first name spelling. We were all together at San Diego
as late as spring 1952.

Again, thank you!

HOW/3/1

Mr. Barker, my Dad, Jack Dedrick, is a Korean War Vet from the HOW
Company 3rd Battalion 1st Marine Division. He has been searching for
some time now for a comprehensive list of casualities from the above
HOW Company. He has been to the Memorial and the Marine Corp Museum
in an attempt to piece together this list.

To date, he has accumulated a list of over 90 men. Some are verified,
some not.

Each time he has hit dead-ends, looking at microfilm lists that are
in very bad shape.

He wants to know if you can help direct him on how he can access all
of HOW Company casualities for the war.

He is forwarding a hardcopy list of the 90 men to me, which I would
be happy to send you along to you as a file if that would be useful.

I look forward to your reply,

Respectfully,
Bill Dedrick BDedrick@SQA.com

I was pleased to find that my father, Harry Reichert Jacobsen, USMCR
is in your database His unit was 1st Squad, 3rd Platoon, How Co.,
3rd Regt,1st Marine Div.

My father was killed 4/24/51 at Hill 902 near Chunchon. I was only
4 months old when he was killed, so I never had a chance to know him.

By a stroke of luck, one of his buddies from his unit, James E.
Jarrett of St Joe, Mo. got up the courage to try to locate my
family. I have now gotten to meet several men who served under and
with my dad and have had a chance to finally get to know him.

Note:
4/25/2000
Milt Keiser mlkeizer@juno.com sends this for Harry:

Mr. Jacobsen,

Saw your inquiry on the Korean War Project WEB page. I did not know your
father, but I shared his night of battle, was wounded and carried off 902
on a stretcher the next morning..

I climbed from noon to 8 pm, as a member of (George) G/3/1, to get up to
the peak of Hill 902 the night of April 23-24, 1951. Your father's unit,
(How) H/3/1, was on the ridgeline to our left, and they were very
instrumental in passing ammunition and grenades to us as we ran short and
the fighting grew steadily heavier. (Item) I-3-1 was on our right. Except
for the 3rd Platoon of G/3/1, with its two attached light .30 cal.
machine guns, orders that night were to avoid firing if possible, so as
not to give away the flanking and ridgeline crest positions.

Marines in the middle poured heavy fire on the Chinese troops who had to
use a "saddle" of land no wider than 15 yards or so to approach our
position. From 8:30 pm until about 9 am the next morning, the Chinese
troops hammered at us but took no more ground than they had gained in the
first 15 minutes. They were very close, however...we traded grenades with
them almost hand-to-hand. Some of the enemy attempted leaping to grab at
our mens' rifle, and the MG, barrels close to the brink of a ledge, a
sharp drop-off more than a tall man's height.

Keys to our resistance were that ledge, just a short distance over the
crest of Hill 902, and the fact that we got to the top of the mountain
first, by about 20 minutes, to claim the ledge. It was slightly cupped,
and protected those who kept their heads down from all except mortar
fire, grenades and rockets, and had only one low spot allowing easy
passage to the front of Hill 902. The rest of the mountain's north sides
weres extremely steep. On the left and right flanks, the slopes were
about 80 degrees and progressively deep, so with enough firepower they
were defended comparatively easily. It was the middle strip, the "throat"
of the hill that bore the brunt of the battle. Seeming to be everywhere
and doing everything, the driving spirit of our defense came from TSgt
Harold "Speedy" Wilson, who was awarded the MOH for his valor and
courageous actions that night. Look him up!

A rough diagram of the mountaintop, and a short resume of the fire-fight,
can be found in "U.S. MARINE OPERATIONS IN KOREA, 1950--1953 Volume IV.
The East-Central Front." This was produced by: Historical Branch, G-3,
Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, Washington, D.C. (1962). It's purchased
from the Marine Corps Association, or from R. J. Speights, P.O. Box
140733, Austin, TX 78714-0733, phone 512/836-0458. Cost when I got mine
was $25, plus $2.50 for shipping and handling.

The whole April 23-24, 1951 scenario starts on Page 104. The Hill 902
information is on pages 11
