Remembering Chesty Puller |

Comments: After having lived long enough to wake up, I'm thankful I knew you, Col (Gen) Puller. Of the many honors and benefits of having served in the Marine Corps was, as I prefer to phrase it "having worked for" then Col. Chesty Puller in W-3-1 from August, 1950 to Sept., 1951, in Korea. Regretfully only years later did I begin to fully realize what a great leader of men he was. He was not one of the "perfumed princes" operating remotely from the rear as described by David Hackworth in his books. However I have evidence here to tell you he must have been one of those leaders Col. T. R. Fehrenback describes in his book "This Kind of War", one who "had the courage to make the hard decisions to make the troops always do the difficult yet correct thing". The long list of 5 Navy Crosses awarded Col. Puller should have been at least6 awards from considering the following example I witnessed during Sept., 1950. The time frame was during the 1st Marine Regiment advance from Inchon and prior to taking Seoul (1st time), in 1950. When I say I worked for Col. Puller, I was an ammunition carrier in W-3-1 (a pack mule actually), and now a days am thankful for the experience. Any way we moved out early one Sept. morning advancing toward Seoul and began to take some small arms fire. Instantly the whole front line took cover, we were in a potato field at the time and a road was about 10 yards to my left, with a line of vehicles and a tank at the front of the column. Everything stopped, including the tank, engines idling. I was safely prone behind some cover in the potato field, feeling secure as I watched the rounds spatter off the road and sides of the tank when I noticed an individual walking forward at a brisk 120, wondering who the poor soul was, a new replacement, some 2nd Lt, or who, steadily coming forward from about 500 yards to the rear. As he got closer I suddenly noted sunlight reflecting off his insignia. As he kept coming forward, rounds were spattering off the road and vehicles and he appeared not to notice, looking grimly straight ahead. As he passed directly by me about 10 yards away, I saw he was a full Colonel, Col. L. B. Puller, his self. He stopped at the rear of the tank, which had a telephone mounted above the right track, and jerked up the phone. I couldn't hear what he said but I remember instantly the tank belched out black exhaust smoke and dug out forward. And likewise, we all, (the 1st Mar Reg't) were moving forward. Yes, I'm indeed thankful I knew you, Col. Puller.

Comments: Ladies & Gentlemen: I still have vivid recollections of Cpl (I believe) Barnes, whom I saw killed on the beach the day of the landing. I should say up front my memory of him was that he displayed the highest qualities of discipline, dedication and devotion, and yet I was in his presence only about a total of 5 minutes of our lives. I recall it this way: We (G-3-1 and W-3-1) rode over from Kobe, Japan to the beaches at Inchon, on an LST given to the Japanese, (it was sailed by a Japanese crew); the Japanese in turn loaned it back to us for the landing. As we entered the landing area the Corsairs and Naval Gunfire were doing their good work, this about 1500 hours, 9-15-50. We were finishing loading up in the LVT's in the tank deck of the LST, and the diesel smoke was something else. Just before I climbed into the LVT I made a last stop in the head. Inside, working by himself was Cpl Barnes, ensuring the facility was left in good order, and as we made brief eye contact I thought "Barnes, I should be doing this for you.", I consider this to be one of the more responsible acts of my unworthy lifetime. Just a very short time later, as we climbed out of the tractors, I saw Barnes, about 50 yards ahead of us on the beach, standing up fully exposed, cutting the barbed wire, for the rest of us. At that instant, he was shot and killed, 50 yards onto the beach, in the first hour of the first day of the invasion. I am thankful I briefly knew him and hope somehow he has passed along to posterity some of his good genes. Kindest regards, Gary Hall PFC 633178

Comments: Ladies & Gentlemen: Am requesting any information, input, about the following event: During Dec 1950 I was attached to G-3-1 in Korea. G-3-1 had a sector of the perimeter on the north side of Hagaru, just south of the Chosin Res. After the 5th & 7th Marines had advanced into our lines, we advanced 9 miles down the hill and shortly thereafter G-3-1 was given the assignment to take some high ground just south leaving Koto-ri. We moved out and took the hill and as we were preparing to get set up for the night in subzero weather and 2-3 feet of snow on frozen ground, we noted some abandoned positions and moved in. I was in a hole about 30 yards from Given Webster's and Marine Nash's light 30. Web was the gunner and Nash was his assistant. I went up the hill with them and was never more than 30 yards away from them, at all times. During the night it was snowing, about midnight Web began firing and continued off and on most of the night. In my sector, I never saw anything and never fired a shot. John Collier had his 60 mortars set up behind and between Web and myself. At daybreak the firing had stopped and I went over to Web's position and I was much surprised at noting 30-50 enemy dead right in front of Web's gun. We talked a minute, Nash had been killed, the only casualty. Sometime that afternoon, we saddled up and moved out, advancing to the sea. Would appreciate any first hand comments about any of this. (Webster has never been given any recognition for this most memorable event, and I didn't know this for over 50 years, then quite accidentally). Would much appreciate any help in straightening this out. Kindest regards, Gary Hall PFC W-3-1 (1st Mar Div) North Korea, 1950-1951.

Machine Guns, 2nd Squad, with the 2nd platoon, if memory is still working.
I am trying to put together a contact list of other Item company personnel during this period. Please help me if you can.
I am NOT writing a book, memoirs, or any such thing. I'm just trying to find as many as I can. If practical, possibly a future reunion.
My goal originally was to find my fellow squad members, but these things have a way of growing.
I am asking for Name, Address, Phone #, Email Address, and if you will a short outline of your life after Korea. If you have any knowledge of others I would appreciate that as well. Please pass the word .
I have been in touch with several and am still looking. If you can use email, I would appreciate that. I am so shaky that my hand writing is almost unreadable.

Comments: My father-in-law, Bill is more of a father to me than my own was. He has been "reminiscing" and I am interested in giving him a gift of his memory. If anyone knows him, please e-mail me. I hear there is a reunion in DC this year for the men of the G/3/1. I hope I can bring him there to see familiar faces and to help him find closure/acceptance.

Comments: I am a Marine who is trying to help a daughter of Cpl. Clinton Dewainne Conn find anyone who knew or served with him, His home of record was Topeka, Kansas although he is buried in Beloit, Kansas (Elmwood Cemetary). I do not know what his MOS was but believe it to be 0300. I do not know where in I co. he served. He re-enlisted 07-31-50 so I believe his original date of enlistment was 07-31-46 or some date close to it. He did his boot camp at San Diego. His date of birth was 05-07-20. The memorial info lists a key of 5791 but I do not know what that means. His daughter is anxious for friends, aquaintences, pictures, any info
Thanks and Semper Fi Sgt, Tom Keith
