Comments: To the men of the 1St Marine Regt, 2Nd Bn. One of your fine officers passed away on May 10,2008. 1St Lt G. Guthrie Conyngham was 84 years old. He was wounded in central Korea on Sept 14, 1951. His son entered a entry 60426 on 2007-03-22. Anyone from Guthries outfit remembering him would comfort the family with any responses. I have known Guthrie since possibly 1939 also his brother Jack also a Marine officer. Both gentleman of the first line. I was in Korea at the time Guthrie was and learned of his being wounded from my brother a former Marine in the 3Rd Marine Division of Iwo Jima, since passed away. At times in Korea our 3 man 101St Signal Bn radio relay team on some isolated hill would have a squad of Marines as guards--cake walk for them but deep sense of security to us--never enough thanks.

Comments: I have a book with the following information on Corporal William Shurts.........
THE SINGING MARINE
Corporal William Shurts, 21 of F. Company, 5th Marine Regiment, was hit by a sniper's bullet on a Korean hill. He died the next day. His inspirational singing brought cheer and courage to the trenches. His comrades described him as the "man who brought God to the front lines!" His favorite song was: "The Old Rugged Cross." How this song enheartened the men in the foxholes! Often, they would join with Corporal Shurts on the chorus. Passing from man to man, William spoke quietly to them of faith in God. "After he talked to us," a comrade wrote, "the dark foiled utterly. But for sinners he has a Gospel.
From the Victorious Life by Charles Trumbull.

We've got a lawyer who's requested we get some first hand details of what it was like to be in the Chosin, the conditions etc. Also, I have what may seem to be a strange question... Did the marine corp provide cigarettes or anything else to you all as an aid to nervousness or to help keep you alert, etc.? Please contact me at weo2him@yahoo.com with any info you have I'm gathering info for the lawyer in hopes that I can help my mother receive the benefits my dad earned in sacrificing his livelihood in Korea. It may be that this battle with the VA will be of help to other veterans' widows in the future.
Thank you, Susan Savage

Easy Company was back in the rear in reserve, but got loaned to the 3rd Battalion for that night. They were sent to Bunker Hill and the Chinese hit them with 8 or 10 waves. I should have been there but had been sent back to NCO school. I want to write up what happened and see to it that the Historical Branch gets it in the record. Comments: My uncle, Andrew Vincent Panella, was KIA in Korea on November 12, 1950. He was a Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton. My Korean War history is a little shaky, but I think that he was in the landing at Inchon and fought in the battle over Seoul very early in the war. As you can see, he died only a few months after the war began. My father has told me a little about my uncle, but I wanted to see if there were any memorials to Korean War casualties. Comments: Looking for my platoon sgt. from Camp Lejeune N.C.,Marine Staff Sgt. Wade. He was a wounded Korean war vet., whom I admired very much.I don't know what outfit that he served in, in Korea. By the grace of GOD and Sgt. Wade's training and expertise, I survived combat in Vietnam when situations seemed grim. Just wanted to thank him and see how he was doing. We served together at Lejeune in 1965. I remember that his wife had a baby at about that time and a group of us in his platoon helped him celebrate the event. If anyone can give me any information about him, please contact Tony at the above e-mail address,
Thank You

Christen M. wrote on 2002-05-27 17:43:08.0
Comments: I am hoping to find someone who knew my grandpa, Jack Howard Evans, while he was serving in Korea. Here's some of his info (and please pardon my lack of knowledge when it comes to military terms):
Jack Howard Evans, Staff Sergeant Fox Company 1st Marines Regiment 1st Marines Division 2nd Battalion
He served in Korea during 1951 & 1952.
He has often told me stories of how he was in charge of 16 machine guns placed on a point in South Korea. I have a picture of him and some of his buddies by one of these machine guns. Here are a few of his comrades' names in case anyone might recognize them:
Leo Gonzales, NM. Roger Hicks, NY. Joseph Robinson, Penn. Evvin Steets, Penn. Elmer Muton, Ky. Kenneth Hooty, Mich. Gary Newman, NY. James Craig, NY David Golden, ILL. Kelly --- Mass. Bob Witte, Minn. Don Kirchgeter, Calif. Bill Leary, NJ.
He has also told me that he was in battles on Pork Chop Ridge & Heartbreak Ridge. (During what time, I don't know. But I could get the information for anyone if they needed it.)
Jack Howard Evans is from Rockwood, Tennessee, and is alive and doing well. If anyone who reads this knew or might know of someone who knew my papaw (grandpa), please e-mail me and I will pass on the information to him. I believe he would really like to see some of his old buddies again. Also, if I have left out any information someone might need to confirm that they knew him, feel free to e-mail me and I'll get it to you as soon as possible. My address is: JoyfulHeart@ilovejesus.net
Thank you so much! In Christ's Love, -Christen M.

A poem I thought you all might like. |
 |
 |
Sandy Homer wrote on 2001-07-24 15:57:12.0
Comments: A poem I thought you all might like.
Freedom Is Not Free My father is the greatest man I have ever known, he fought in the cold, the dark, and territory unknown.
He fought for the freedom of people he had never met. The blood and the horror was a sight he would never forget.
The mighty Marines, fought hard and bold, but many friends fell, in the deep bitter cold.
Brothers in combat, brothers in arms, brothers in death held in each otherÂ’s arms.
Holding a friend whose life is gone instead of yours. Brother you will be remembered as a hero of this war.
With the battles raging, they could have fled, but Marines can be proud they took with them their dead.
If you ask the question why that is so, every marine will answer proudly, that is the Marine code.
They may not have known what they were fighting for, but brothers are brothers and thatÂ’s what Marines were there for.
Friendships made by bonds of blood. The heroes will not be forgotten. Their stories will be told.
Held dear to our hearts with the deepest of love. They died for freedom and the price was blood.
Thank you father for being willing to die, and thank you father for coming home to bless our lives.
But leaving the brothers who died for the unknown, when remembering them, you will not be alone.
There is an old battlefield, far across the seas, that is now covered with large buildings and beautiful trees.
A grandfather reflects, the time has gone fast, as his grandchildren are playing, unaware of the past.
“Thank you for our freedom, Thank you”, he cries. “My children were worth it.” As tears welled in his eyes.
The grandfather humbly dropped down to his knee, he will never forget the Marines nor that “Freedom is not Free”.
Daddy your heroic fight for freedom will never be forgotten. Thank you for being willing to give your life for your friends. I thank your friends for giving their life for you. Your life is a tribute to them. You can hold your head high. They call you the Chosin Few, because you really are chosen. You have chosen to live your life to the fullest. You have done that with honor, a tribute to your brothers and to us. And now we honor you father, you are an example to us all. Thank you. By Sandy Homer
-My family held a party paying tribute to my father. We gave him a framed window box with his purple hearts in it a picture of him during the war. It was beautiful. At that time I read him this poem I wrote for him. My father was a Gunny sargent 1 Marines 2nd Battalion Fox company, he was at Choisin. He is a great man. I am proud of him and all that fought. I hope you all enjoyed the poem.-

Comments:
My uncle, Bernard Lee Brandfass, IDNO 663328, PFC USMC was killed in action on 9/21/50. Am seeking info about him & details regarding his final action.
His obituary states that he died at Yongdungp'o. I also found a Korean Presidental Unit Citation for the First Marine Division in his effects.
Also,in a letter he wrote home on 9/1/50 he made reference to serving in the mighty "Fox" company & stated that the rebel flag, (presumedly the stars & bars) was their symbol.
The return address on his letter is "F" co., 1st Plt., 2nd Bn., 1st Marines. Are there unit histories available so I can learn more about the action at Yongdugpo?
He also stated in one of his letters that he travelled to "Yokohama", Japan (arriving on 8/28/50) from San Fran on the U.S.S. President Jackson (APH-18).
Please let me know if you have any information. Thank you in advance.

Comments: I am writting for my father, Charles Liebal, who was wounded in action in May 1952. He was placed in North East Korea around Hill 812. Then they were moved near Panmunjon because the Chinese said they would retake Soul by May Day. My father's platoon walked into a perfect ambush and they suffered 30% casualties. He was injured and sent to a hospital. One of his buddies wrote to him in the hospital and told him that most of their platoon was wiped out taking Pork Chop hill. He would like to find out if there are any survivors from his platoon. If you have any information he would appreciate it and I will pass it on to him. He hasn't gotten into the internet, yet. I have also copied all of the letters on this site and giving them to him to review. If he has any information on any of these I will be glad to email that person.
Thank you for your help. Sincerely; Diana Hall cdhall@rica.net

Our family is trying to locate some Marines who may have know LT Burrus to help determine where he and the other men died, so we can forward the information to the DOD remains team. Any information you may have will help a lot int his effort. Thank you in advance.

Comments: I fail to see the USS BENFOLD listed, dedicated at San Diego in memory of my cousin, Edward Clyde Benfold, a US Navy Medical Corpsman attached to a Marine unit in Korea. He saved two Marines, but lost his -- awarded the Medal of Honor (Navy) the usual way -- after death. The ship exists - we were present last year when it was put into service.

Comments: Looking for any information on my great uncle, Cpl. Philip Anthony Reynolds USMC, killed in Action November 29th 1950, at Koto Ri. I believe he was a machine gunner with Second Battalion, First Marines. He won the Navy Cross posthumously. He was from Freehold NJ, and after the War a fellow Marine, Jack Liester of OH, wrote Philip's father a letter offering condolences and relating Philip's last days.
