He took more than 400 color slides and I have scanned copies of them I'm happy to share with anyone interested.

Comments: My Dad, Nicholas J. Sheppard served with C-1-1-1; I believe he was in in a leadership position. We know that he walked out onto a minefield to rescue one of his officers. We spent a few summers with him at Camp LeJeune during his active duties. Anyway, as we're trying to get his memoirs down on paper, any stories anyone can contribute would be greatly appreciated! At 82, he's still in excellent health [golf and tennis any day he can get an opponent or a foursome that is YOUNG enough for him to compete with]. Many thanks.

Comments: I know absolutely nothing about the unit, hill number, etc., that my grandfather, Herbert Marion McCauley served under, but I do know that he was a Marine from Maryland, and fought in the Korean War.
My grandfather died when my mother was 2 days old. Since she's never known her father, any memories others share with her are very precious. I'm just trying to find anyone who might have known my grandfather, and can tell her about him, or what he did in Korea. The 50th anniversary of his death is coming (Dec. 27) and I know he's on her mind quite a bit as a result.

Serving time also as a Marine(80-84)I too would like to learn more and also locate anyone who might remember my dad and possible like to get in touch with him. Comments: My father Cpl Stanley Nowak Jr was transferred to Korea in a replacement draft on 7 Jan 1951. He joined 1st Bn, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division on 14 Jan 1951. He was WIA on 25 April 1951. He was WIA again on 10 June 1951 and died of his wounds the following day on 11 June 1951 at "E"Co.,1stMedBn,Field Hospital.
Dad was fatally wounded on 10 June 1951 while 1stMarDiv was advancing northeast from Hwachon Reservoir to the Punchbowl. They were clawing out daily gains of 1,000 - 2,000 meters, ultimately reaching their objective despite heavy NKPA fire.
Captain Calvin R. Baker Jr., Commanding Company "A", 1st Bn, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division wrote; While in the area of Yanggu, Korea on 10 June 1951 our company was assulting an enemy held hill. Enemy action made it necessary for the emplacement of Stanley's machine gun squad to give covering fire. Stanley was directing the fire of his machine gun when he was wounded. He received immediate medical attention and within a few minutes was evacuated from the hill. While being evacuated he dropped into a state of unconsciousness from which he never recovered. He passed away on 11 June 1951.

Comments: Like most of you here, I am looking for the history of B-1-1-1. Has anyone come across a good history (book) of this unit during the time period of Nov 52 - Sept 53? My father, Sgt. Charles (Chuck) Cervantes was an infantry Squad Leader and Platoon Sgt during this period in Korea. I have a number of photos from Korea, but unfortuneately my father did not put names, dates, or places on them before he died in 2004.
On an unrelated note, the Navy is extremely helpfull in providing information to family concerning their deceased miltary members, see the link below.

Comments: Hello Ray thank you so much for cobtacting me, This is so Hard for me my Dad died on May 4th of this year of a Heart attack in my parents Drive way, This was unexpected since he had never had any Heart problems. I have always been a Daddy's Girl I am 43 years old now and I grieve every day for him I didn't even get to say goodbye to him my other 4 sisters did I lived farther away from the hospital and wasn't at home that day I was down the road helping someone I live in a rural area in Scottown, Ohio. I missed my dad by 5 mins. I have so many regrets right now one is that me and dad talked allot about sitting down and talking about his experiences in Korea. That didn't get to happen. My dad was 75 and worked up to the day he died at Sam's club he loved it. This is the hard part that might have added to his heart Attack. a Month before he passed away he found out that my Mom was Terminally ill and was dying from Renal Cell Carcinoma of the Kidney's. My parents were married 53 Years and raised 5 daughters. Getting back to the service. I ordered all of my Fathers enlistment papers from the Service and got them a week ago. What year was your dad in Korea and can you remember other's that was in your squadron. I have names of a few who served with Dad. Do you have a way to scan the pictures and email them to me you don't know how much I would appreciate it. Right now I could call you and give you more information on Dad and his times and dates in the service but I can't promise I won't cry. I feel like my daddy died yesterday. I break down crying sometimes when he is mentioned. I am crying now just hoping that you do know my dad and the pictures are of him. If it turns out he is the fuller then I have some pictures to share with you because I have pictures of him and his friends in the service that you may not have. If you would like to talk to me my Full name is Karen Leslie Fuller Dillon. I go by Leslie my email is kleslied@yahoo.com. I tried to email you back but the email came back as a failure. So I would appreciate if you could go ahead and email the pictures if you have them scanned or semd me an email and I will send you mt address thank you so much. I also Live in Ohio. Getting back to my mom she is missing my Dad every Day and cry's every day still. Mom's cancer has spread to her lungs and her pelvis and it is in her bones and Bone marrow. She has went through Radiation to slow the cancer and also radiation to slow down the pain. She has lost 40 pounds and is moving slow but she is still trying to hang in there. The doctor gave her 6 months to 1 year to live and she had passed 8 months so far. It is very time sensitive on mom right now so if you do have pictures I would love to get a copy of them before she dies I really don't think she has much time left. You don't know how much this means to me. I am praying that you do know my Dad because I missed so much information about Korean and the war and I hope you will be able to tell me about it. If you end up that it isn't the right fuller. I would appreciate any stories or Information about the war any way that you can share with me that is if it isn't to hard for you to talk about it. If you can't talk about it maybe you can through email. Again thank you so so very much for contacting me. Karen Leslie Fuller

Comments: Hello. I am trying to find out any information about where the 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Battalion, Weapons Company 2 was on March 15, 1951. Did it take part in Operation Ripper? Did anyone reading this know Sgt. Fred Boesiger? He was my father's first cousin and he is a family legend. I wore his old USMC jackets when I was a kid. No one seems to know how he was killed on March 15.
Thank you kindly.

DAN GARVEY wrote on 2006-10-22 18:57:59.0
Comments: Does anyone out there remember Sgt Major James Michael Garvey? He was not too talkative about his times, however I did get out of him two facts:
1)that he was Sgt Major 1st Bn 1st Marines about 1948-49. He spent 30 years in the Corps and retired out of El Toro MAB as Major in 1966. 2)he was on the Oklahoma prior to 7 Dec 1941, went to Bremerton and shipped out on board the Maryland.
Jim passed away several years ago ... I miss him like hell and would like to know more about him. If anyone can shed any light, I would appreciate it immensely.
Thanks and Semper Fi ... Dan

Keywords: My dad served in the Korean War, a Marine and in 52-53 met a buddy name John S. Crocus. They were both in Abel Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Division and 1st Regiment. My dad, Ladislado Rodriguez, is from San Antonio, Texas SN#1359652, he said they didn't use social sec. numbers at the time. His friend, John S. Crocus, was from Cleveland, OH at the time and when my dad was sent stateside, John S. Crocus was sent to Okinawa because he didn't have enough time in. James Lockett wrote on 2005-11-30 11:37:44.0
Comments: My father John Ashbrook Lockett left the Corp in 1953 as I understand it. He was very private as many vets when it comes to war stories. He only spoke of base life and bootcamp. Although some of these stories were funny, they were all enjoyable. When my Dad became sick in 1991 he started to tell me more about his actual missions. I never saw my Dad shed a tear until that day, it scared the hell out of me. I am proud to say that he went to heaven a proud stedfast Marine. When he realized that it hurt hum so to speak of his missions, he clammed up and never would mention it again. there are rumors in the family that he was a spotter. There are others that he was some sort of special missions Marine. I know that he saw combat, he was awarded at least 2 purple hearts, and had scars on his back from napom(sp?). My Dad left the Marines a SGT 1sr Class. I now have my own children and grandchildren and I would love to be able to them new stories about Dad. My mom doesn't have any medals of Dad's due to a fire many yrs before they even thought of me. I would also like to find out what medals and honors Dad had. Please help me find out anything about him.

Comments: I am a former Navy Hospital Corpsman of the Marine Corps type. My Mother's brothers were Marines in WWII and Korea. My Uncle Ed Hayhurst was assigned to 1/1 early in the "Korean Conflict". Eddie passed away in 1995. Marines of all generations will appreciate this: When I joined the Navy, Uncle Ed called my Mom (his little sister) and said in his best, salty Marine / parade deck voice; "you tell him (me) I disown him as a nephew! Bigtime jock uh? It'll be some warm cozy up 'The Chosin' before he'll set foot on my property again! Y'all know I'm forever armed, and 'hatin them 13-button squid assholes!" Then he slammed down the phone. It takes nearly two years to train a basic Hospital Corpsman.... during which Mom heard not from uncle Ed. Once I completed those arduous academics, I was ordered to the Third Marine Division, by way of Camp Pendleton's "Field Medical Training". Low and behold Mom received a call from Ed, who (in his "best Marine dressed") said something like; "yes ma'am, and.... you know how I love ya.... and I want you to tell my FAVORITE nephew (ME, the Navy Corpsman) that he's invited to Ed's Barbeque & Brew any 'fuckin time"! After I presented him with a DI's Campaign Cover, we ate his gourmet chow, then drank a few beverages. It was at this point that Eddie Elbert Hayhurst broke out his photo albums. GENTLEMAN: I learned more from Uncle Ed in an hour, than I had during three months at Camp Pendleton, or would in the next three years at 3d MARDIV! Maybe even more than I've learned as a Marine historian during the past 25 years! Before I left, Aunt Gladys pulled me aside and told me, "I've been married to him for 30 years, and I've never seen those pictures.... he's never talked about any of that stuff with me". I must tell you all that I have (subsequintly) heard this alot as a civilian medical professiional (X-Corpsman). My original intrest in USMC history was strictly personal. However, now as more of you old bastards are leaving this poor young Doc, I am obligated to tell your story the right way.... Ed's way. I need to hear from Ed Hayhurst's shipmates in those specific combat unit(s)of 1/1.... according to Marine Corps tradition. In that manner which is now concidered "politically incorrect". Or as you and I know it.... "The Truth"! I invite any and all of you to e-mail me. I will be happy to call you or give you my phone number, and visit with you anywhere out west.

Then to Yakasuka hospital, states and to NOD Bremerton until discharge. We did alright, untrained reservists and a lot of WW-ll vets to help us learn the game. One of the proud, the few, the Marines. Comments: My father completed basic in SanDiego, graduating in April,1951 with the 27th platoon, second battalion. He was stationed in BArstow with the motor transport supply outfit. He was on the General John Pope and sailed from San Diego to Japan on Thursady, April 17th 1952. After being in Korea, he was pulled back to division to attend Non Commissioned Officers school. He was there until the end of July. He returned to the fuel camp, but on August 22nd of 1952 he volunteered to go to the "front" bunker hill, after the 1st marines had been hit pretty hard. He was squad leader of the 2nd squad, 3rd platoon, of Fax Co. 1st marines. He claimed to have 12 good men in his squad. On August 23rd after being ordered by his lieutenant back to the command post bunker he fell under sniper attack a few feet from the post. I am hoping to find someone who knew my father and can tell me anything aabouth this man and the events I have discribed. It would mean a great deal to me.

Comments: Still trying to locate anyone that may have been with this group. My husband went to Pusan, Korea in Aug 1950 with them, on the USS Henrico. Before he was injured over there he was in fighting at Pusan, Mason and the Naktong River.
He was hurt when a "One Lung Charlie" flew overhead, breaking his eardrum and throwing him in the Naktong River. He was with another soldier that suffered shrapnel to his forehead. Both survived. This other soldier was too young to be over there and had to go back to Retraining at Atsu, Japan.
There is another incident near, or close to Mason; concerning a battered schoolhouse in Chindong-ni. There are several stories about this incident one on the Internet and the other in a book by Marguerite Higgins.
If you know anyone that was there or have any information please write me.

Does anyone know of a place I can get the sticker for the following units: 1st Recon Battalion 1st Battalion 1st Marine Regiment 1st Marine Div. Also if anyone served in these units and remembers an incident with a helicopter and falling out please contact me. We are in need of more info for my husband. After the incident everyone was dispursed to other locations. Thank you and May God bless you all...

Comments: Wanted to inform of the death of Howard Reed, USMC from Detroit, MI. (May 2003) Was on USS FARGO, landed at Inchon, was in capture of Seoul, and Chosin Resovoir. Received Silver Star, left service as Cpl. Charlie Company of First Marines.
My dad attended some reunions over the last 20 years and enjoyed them immensly. I think it renewed his pride of the USMC quite a bit. He worked as a carpenter in Detroit, had 4 boys and adopted another and even though sick his last couple of years (emphysema), he was sharp and alert till the time came.
He is interred at Arlington Cemetary.

Comments: I am looking for any information about my father John McGuire who was a navy corpsman with a Marine division during the Korean War. My father never spoke much about the war while he was alive. I do know that he was in Seoul Sept/Oct of 1950. I have a newspaper clipping of him with Marine Sgt. Leon Reese holding an American flag. The caption also states that he was wounded shortly after the picture was taken. All his service medals were stolen after his death and no one in the family knows what happened to his service records. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Mary McGuire

Comments: These are wonderful sights. some of the names that I have read seem familiar, but they don't give me much to go on, when they don't put the year and months that they were in Korea. Its hard to go with just a first and last name. I know that not everyone has a computer. But maybe they can ask a friend or two for their e-mail address, and one could get in touch. There are a couple that I may know them, but no address.

Comments: I wrote a novel about the Korean War based on my experiences in that war. IN THE SHADOW OF GLORY is about a Marine infantry squad fighting in the outpost battles during the last half of that war. There is no Hollywood hokum in this book. it is an accurate depiction of men in combat-- how they lived, how they talked and how they died. The book may be ordered at Amazon.com Barnes & Noble or Borders. E-mail me if you would like a signed copy for $20.00 which includes S&H.

Comments: My uncle, Sgt. William Clark Crowe, Jr. was KIA on the 24th of April, 1951. A postcard I have from him reveals he was in H&S Co., 1st Bn., 1st Marines, 1st Div. FMF(?). My Question is: was his unit at Horseshoe Ridge that day? If so, that makes it likely that's where he was KIA. I haven't got his USMC record yet and don't know if it will reveal this info.
Any info. will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dr. Wm. Littlejohn

Comments: Arrived in Korea with the 10th draft about 3JUL51. I disembarked near Pusan off the Gen. William Weigel. I was assigned as a replacment in "c" co. 1st Bn 1st mar.upon arriving, fellow marine Zinn from teas was killed by incoming, Marine "Poncho" from New Mexico Went to his rescue and was latter awarded the Silver Star. Our unit was placed in a defensive mode until untll we jumped off from the 11SEP51-25th SEP51 Where we drove the enemy to the "punch bowl" area. For our participation, our unit received the Presedential unit citation. I would like to hear from fellow marines or anyone who may know of their whareabouts or whatever may have happend to them. Lt. Martin, who played football for William ann Mary, he was wounded while checking our lines at night. Pfc Preston Doane-Mass. He later went to O.C.S. Pfc Stan "Andy" Anderle From Cedar Rapids Ia. A few months after the "Punch Bowl" operation, I was transfered back to Battalion Where I spent the rest of my tour of duty.

Comments: I was searching the WEB for the Marines in the 5th Regiment that went on the 110 mile hike on March 3-7, 1958 under the command of Colonel DM Schmuck. The Regimental Hike was called "the Boondockers Supreme". I would like to get in touch with anyone who participated in this Hike with me to exert my "bull session" privileges.
