served in the Corps - 1st Marine Division during
Guadalcanal- My grandfather has long since died - and I
am curious about his role during this important
conflict. Others may have known him through his tenure
in Korea as the Commanding Officer of the Air Lift
command. If you have any insight into his service
during WWII Pacific that would grand - I am his

CHARLES MATTOCKS JR. wrote on May 31, 2010

City and State:

Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER

Comments: Don Husson, is a cousin, and served in the Marine Corps from 1949 - 1959. Sadily he passed away in 1993, never said anything about his time in Korea or the Corps. He did hand me some Sergeant chevrons once, I wore them as a tribute after I was promoted to Sergeant in 1984. He was a Clerk Typist according to what documents I was able to obtain, I don't know where he attended boot camp, though I suspect San Diego as he was from Michigan. He left the states aboard the USS General HW Butner on 15 Aug 1950 diembarking at Kobe Japan on 29 Aug 1950. Entry on pg 17 was signed by Col. John H. Cook, Jr. Embarked on LST Q-036 landing at Inchon, 15 Sept 1950. 14 October he embarked on the USS Noble, disembarking at Wonsan on 26 October. The 6 Dec found him embarking aboard LST 898 and disembarking at Hungnam, 9 Dec. By 23 Dec he embarked onboard the USS General Sultan and disembarked on 28 Dec 1950 at Masan. On 10 Jan 1951, he once again embarked on LST 898, diembarking at Pohang on 11 Jan. Don did board a ship again for almost 11 months, when on 6 Nov 1951 he embarked aboard USS Noble at Sokcho-Ri, and sailed for Kobe Japan finally arriving in San Fransico aboard the USS Menard on 25 Nov 1951. Most of these last entries on page 17 - 17a were made by CWO R.A. Clark, Bn. PersO.
I am trying to determine what unit/units he served with in Korea, and the States during the War. I am assuming that he was a member of the 1st Combat Support Group based on the first entry on page 17 was signed by Col. John H. Cook, Jr., commanding officer for 1st CSG, who possibly commanded as a Captain the 2nd Tank Battalion as part of the 1st Marine Brigade (Prov) in July 1941. The information that I was allowed from the NA does not give when he was promoted, what units he was joined to, just service dates, ranks held, SRB pgs 8,9,10,17,17a. He left Korea as Sergeant Donald Husson. Any help would be great.
Thank you,
Charles Mattocks, Jr.
former GySgt, USMCR

Comments: Marv Weatherly, a veteran of the Battle of Chosin, died August 27, 2004. He was 72. My father was a lifelong Marine, and named his bulldog "Master Sergeant." He spoke about the Corp with love and pride and watched with care the events that have unfolded in Iraq - "We are the first in and the last to leave" was what he taught us about the dedication of a marine.

It should be noted that, during his time in the Corp, my father had the largest hat size (8) and the smallest shoe size (7) in the Corp...a record that may well still stand today.

On behalf of my father's love of the Corp, "Semper Fi!"

We wrote a lot during the war, and I can remember him talking about human wave mass attacks and bugles. I know he suffered frost bite on his feet and fingers. He was born around 1928. I wish I had more on him, but this is sjust a shot in the dark.

I am looking for information about my father. He passed away in June of 1980. I was young then, so I didn't get to ask him much. I do know that he was a Corporal in the Marines in Korea. I was told that he was part of the first group of Marines to enter Korea. I know that at one point he had something to do with helping wounded soldiers out of harms way to get medical help. My sister and I wanted to know more so we can tell our children (I have 2 and my sister has 1) about their grandpa. I would appreciate any information or help given.
Thanks,

Draft in Novenber,1951. Our outfit did mess duty, guard duty for Chinese POW's and trains that
carried LVT's up to the lines. My MOS changed to 3023 because promotions were hard to come by in the other ones. All I remember is that Korea was cold and dirty and the cold wind came off the water at Masan-ni. Our tent was composed of a great bunch of guys. New York,Georgia,South Dakota
you name it we had it.

I'm the son of Harold Pletcher. I'm looking for

hear first hand from anyone that knew him
