Comments: My father Lee Frank Cole was in Korea in the amphip units. He has mentioned very little about the war, but had mentioned a buddy named Vaughn Whistler from Iowa. He was a state swimming champ in Iowa. If anyone knows him and how to contact him it would be a great suprise fro my dad. Please post reply if you have a guy in mind. Thanks on behalf of my dad Ted Cole

Comments: My father John Devereaux Hall was proud to have served with his fellow Marines in Korea. He told me about going down the ramp of the LST (in his Armored Amphip)into the water, "feeling like he was gonna keep on going strait down to the bottom!" He's been deseased since 82, and I still miss him very much! I have much more to say; but I'd rather share it with any of his buddies out there, and or their kin. One thing that may sticks out in any of the 250 or so of the men in his Company. On their ship heading to Korea he was working in the Kitchen when a large rat ran the kitchen. He chased it and grabbed a meat cleaver as he ran through the galley. He chased it into a corner next to some gallon cans. The rat raised up fangs and claws showing! My Dad chopped him and the cans up taking care of the "Foe". Well a couple days later the CO (or XO) called a company formation. Then he called for Cpl Hall front and center! My Dad thought,"Oh sh_t what did I do now?" Then the CO preceded to read a homemade citation: It stated about how "Cpl Hall armed with only a meat-cleaver, risking life, and limb threw himself into the jaws of the foe; The common enemy... A Rat!" It ended saying "We the mice and men of 1st Armored Amphib salute you Cpl Hall for a job well done. Then the CO pinned a "Rat Metal" on my fathers chest! The ribbon was made from a flour sack, connected to a star cut out from a post card, and in black felt pen had "Hero # 1" on it. My Dad said that that metal meant more to him than all his other metals put together...
If anyone out there in internet land thinks they knew him please contact me by email, or phone call, or letter.
Thanks,
Michael D. Hall

Keywords: Many people called him "Johnny". He was on an LVTA-4/5? armored Amphibian Tank with the 1st Armored Amphib Batt. He on Wolmi-Do, the Kempo air field, Inchon. His unit received Presidental Unit Citations. I know his unit came up on (at least) one Russian make T-34 tank and the "75 pack howitzer round bounced off it!" They called in an air strike to take the T-34 out. I have other accounts my father told me many years ago which I would love to share with anyone who has an interest his units history.

Comments: I arrived at B co.as a infintry Cpl.summer of 54. Co. C.O. was Capt.Gordy.I had never even seen a LVTA-5 before.I was sent to new rifle range as range coach Dec,Jan,Feb. than back to B co.as a gunner when we were moved to New Mexico position. The Bn. shipped stateside with Div. but B co. sent T.A.D.to 3 rd.Div. at Camp McGill near Yokosuka,Japan. Promoted to Sgt,I worked as TC in 3rd Plt. [Tk.#32]and as Plt.Sgt. We seemed to have run out of Staff Sgts, there were 4 "buck" sgt.s in the Co.We rejoined 1st. plt in Okanawa to shoot and break in a large bunch of replacements. I was then sent state side to be an instructer [A-5s] at Del Mar. I remember my friend from St Lewis, Sgt Hipphoff was sent to Okanowa with 1 st. Plt. Company CO was Lawrence,a Plt leader Lt.Kirsh, gunny was TSgt Dosh. Of the 4 sgt.s were Lumbra, Smith,Wetterholt, and myself.I remember getting a new 2nd Lt. platoon leader one rainy day while we were doing PM. The turret hatch opened and two muddy boots stepped onto my clean gun. After a few choice words the brass bars came into view and he said "Sgt ,can I have a few words with you out side." He appologised for getting mud on my gun but said he couldn,t have me speak to him like that. We got along fine later. I remember one of the tractors sinking in the bay, the TC was Cpl. Fisher, I don,t recall any big deal being made about it, nor getting it back to shore. I was discharged April 1956 at the school in Del Mar,Ca.

Comments: My first duty was as a forward observer on a hill overlooking the junction of the Han and Imjim rivers. There were four of us at that position. Timeframe was late 1954, probably around December. I remember names like LTC Stoll, MAJ Bray, 1LT Secrest (Fire Direction Control Officer), SGT Glenn Seymour, SGT Ulrich, MSG Weaver, TSG Reynolds, Les Wright, William Piscatelli, and Joe Psycho who used to drum on *everything*. Would love to hear from others that were there at around the same time. I remember we backloaded out of Inchon on 4 LSTs in convoy and it took over 30 days. One of the LSTs kept having steering difficulties and it would leave the formation frequently. We traded the Navy cooks C-Rations for fresh butter and jam and made sandwiches out of a whole loaf of freshly baked bread.

My name is Rev. John W. Coates originally from Norristown, PA, though I
live in Delaware now. I read your info on the Korean War Vets Home
Page.
So decided to try to write. Perhaps this could be on the home page as a
message.
I started with the 1st Armored BTN when it formed on the West Coast at
Camp Delmar. I was in the Service Company the first few months. Then
went to Korea with Service Company and was in the First Amored Amtrak in
1950. The second time, when we went back to relieve B Company in April
1951, I was a gunner with A/5 in A Company. Captain Guy was our Company
Commander. Lieutenent Petty was the Adj. When we were in Korea with the
1st Armored we were FMF 1st Marine Division. When we were in Japan we
were the Pacific Pac.
I served COG 1 year, after serving 3 years before the war started. I
went home in the 7th draft
in 1951.
I have found a book called Across the Reef about the Armored Amphibs in
the different wars which focuses somewhat on the Korean operation as
part of the book. The author's name is Victor Croizat. He published
it in 1989. The original publisher was Blandford Publishers, though it
is distributed by Sterling Publishers, 2 Park Ave, NY, Ny 10002. Mr
Croizat's address, the last time I had contact with him, was 217 - 21st
Street, Santa Monica, CA 90402.
Len Meiners, a Marine from St. Louis Missouri, has tried to do reunions
with the 1st Armored Amphibs. You can contact him, if you wish, and
give him your address. His address is:
