Comments: Just found this site. I was mostly with H&S but did a short stint with C Battery. I was not on the train that wrecked during the move to San Diego. I would be interested in knowing of any who were with the unit in the 1951/52 time frame. I see Walt Cheely has left several messages. Hi, Walt.

Comments: After the experience of the train wreck enroute to the West coast we arrived in Korea August 1951 via USS Meigs. It was about the third day out to sea when I broke out with poison ivy from the waist down.I'll never forget that week. I continue to have vived memories of that wreck. I remember the first night in Korea as we disembarked the air raid sirens while we were moving to our gun compound to relieve the Army. I also remember the planes landing in front of our gun position at (K-3,I think) and the pilot that crashed just short of our position. Would like to hear from anyone that served 8-51 to 5-52. Comments: I should of mentioned that I along with Larry Barrett(Colorado) were in the radio shack on the side of the hill. We pulled 24 hours duty(6 on & 6 off). Sure got boring. I remember that the Army had a riot on some island and ours was the only radio that could reach the good guys. An Army General came to us and asked to use our radio. He asked what could he do for me(Larry was on R&R)and I asked for a fifth of whiskey and the next day his aide brought one to me, I got crocked and had a Capt mass. What could he do? Nothing-No body else could man the radio Ha/Ha

Do you all remember the typhoon that hit us. I slept in one of the gun pits.

Comments: Was discharged from first tour of duty January 1950. Moved to Chicago. On July 25, 1950 was notified to report to the 1st 90 AAA. It was then I learned I was in a reserve unit.

In August we left, by train, for Camp LeJeune, more specfically "tent camp", out on the highway. It was completely overgrown with weeds and bushes. The Quonst huts were in very bad shape. The first few weeks were spent clean up the place, getting shot, medical check ups and general organization.

There were reserve 2nd Lt's out of colledge who had never commanded troops before. It was a riot watching then attempting to march a squad of men.

At first the Corps didn't know what to do with us. Other units were going in from different parts of the country. For it it was like a reuion, I ran into guys I hasd served with before.

A lot of the people called up served in WWII and were in not so good health. When we arrived the North Koreans were no using any aircraft. At first a lot of time was spent cleaning up the 90's. Then we practiced precision artillery firing. When it was felt we were ready to ship out, aircraft started showing in combat in Korea, so we went back to training, learning how to fire at jets.

After we were considered ready for duty in Korea, we started loading the Troop train. Just prior to shipping out, I was discharged due to my prior service.

Comments: Hi: Was a young 17 yr old when enlisted, got activated of Aug 7, 1950. In Augusta Maine. Capt. Hughes was our Commanding Officer. Was on the North train going to Cal. Southern train was involved in train wreck. Overseas on Gen M.C. Meigs Arrives in Sept., 51, returned home in April of "52". Forgot the Hill or Town where we were, but supporting the 1st Marine Air Wing, believe the Checkerboard Squadron, Ted Williams? Remember Col Mays getting killed as he went up in a plane or helo. Where does one get info. on the whereabout of units that served in Korea, I remember taking a train to Soul and Kimpo airbase supposedly got a star on my Korean ribbon for it. Do wish I could remember more. Found an old sketch on myself drawn by Jack Turner of Chicago, done at Onslow Beach in N.C. Remember going on R&R in Japan, and visited the Fighter Squadron at Kimpo Airbase, manned by a Squad of Marine Sergeants. This was in Kyoto, Japan. I'm trying to remember and things seem to get in place as I keep trying. Drove a new M38 Jeep for my CO while over there and then promoted to Sgt and head of a Quad "50" Wish I could remember more, maybe someone out there can help me out.

Thanks to All.

When I left korea, i was transferred to Marine Barracks, Clarksville Base, Clarksville, TN. The barracks SgtMaj was Glenn W. Lusk, who was the former SgtMaj of the 1st 90's in Korea. I recollect that he told me about the train wreck that occurred when the battalion was enroute to Calif. A couple of my buddies from Clarksville, live in Calif and i have had a couple of phone calls from them when they were visiting SgtMaj Lusk.

When the unit went to Korea it was attached to the 1st MAW. I was with the battalion from Dec. 1950 to Feb. 1952.

The C.O. was Col. May who was a K.I.A. around Jan. of 1952. I would like to talk to anyone from the old outfit, especially any of those who were in the troop train wreck going cross country to embark on the USMS Gen. Meigs To Korea.

Unit History sought

From: KudzuFL@aol.com E-mail

Subject: 1st 90 mm Gun Batatlion USMC

Thanks for this project.

Can't believe it's been 43 years since I did my tour in Korea, although
it's often seemed we dropped by the wayside in the wake of the
Vietnam war. I spent some time with the !st 90mm AAA Gun Battalion,
FMF Pac, and have never seen mention of the 90's in any history or
roster of Korean Marine Corps units.

I'd like to find a history of the 1st 90's, or hear from anyone who
served with the battalion at the time of its initial deployment to
Korea, and thereafter.

Thanks.

This is the best coverage I have encountered pertaining to the Korean
War. Thanks for all you are doing. I served at K3 Airfield in 1953 and
was there when the Truce was signed. My service was with Provisional
Automatic Weapons Battery, which was a group of volunteers from the 1ST
90 mm Gun Bn. Our Quad 50 Cal. machine guns defended the MAG 33 VMF
115 & 311 squadrons,and were on call as infantry support.Former Sgt.
