The War - Ken Burns Pg. 405

Comments: The picture on page 405 (second from left) in Ken Burns's book The War, An Intimate History 1941-1945, looks like my dad, Julian Poncini. He was a Sgt. with the H&S Bn., 11th Marines on both Peleliu and Okinawa. In Ken Burns's book, the caption says the photo is a Marine unit. I've seen this photo in a different book and the caption states it is an Army unit on Okinawa.

During WWII, the Marines had camouflage helmet covers, in the photo, there are no covers, but there is a rectangular shape on two of the helmets.

Can this be a USMC unit? Are these USMC rain ponchos? Does anyone know what the rectangular shape stands for?

My dad never talked about the war and would not even ride in a Japanese car, up until his death in 1986. He was also called up for the Korean War.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Comments: In Korea from January 1951 to January 1952. I am looking for buddies who served in the 1st battation to corroborate a foot injury received during incoming artillery during the Summer of 1951 on a full moon night when "The Thing" with Jim Arness was a movie shown on the same night.

Names recalled a Cpl Pettyjohn, in charge of the generator (he also for a time rigged a drum for washing clothes that was driven from a pulley off the generator), our mailclerk, Sgt Jim Graves of Kansas City. Major Thomas E. Cave was our CO. M/S Robert Trost was Sgt/Major with us until Sept or October (Rotated), Lt. John Daughtry; a Lt(USN)Sanborn or Sanford or Stanford, who was our medical Officer. A Cpl or Sgt Midcap was in our Message Ctr. I think there was a Lt McCaffrey. A Lt. Kaplan was our Personnel Officer. If any of these names ring a bell with you or you might be one named, I am trying to substaniate my foot injury for an injured-in-action Purple Heart that I turned down as too embarassing when I was 20. At 72 it is not so embarrasing and the lack of has been a cost to me for VA benefits and Civil Service exam points back when.

It would be great for any information that you can supply. Thanks and SemperFi. Bill Carman (the dad)

Comments: My uncle, Nelson "Skip" Toothman was in the Korean conflict. He served as a Marine Ranger. I was wondering if anyone remembered him. He died in a silver mine in the '60's. Debi
