Comments: My father, John A. Smith, served in this unit in Korea from, April 10, 1952 - Oct 8, 1952, tranferred to "I" Co, 3rd BN, 7th Inf, until Mar 9, 1953. He passed away 5 years ago, and recently my mother gave me the few things he had from his service. I have been curious about unit activites while he was there, locations of those units, maps, anything at all would be greatly appreciated so I can get an idea of his time in Korea. I know he had a couple photo albums, but the ones I remember, my mother says she never saw. Any info would be appreciated.

John Matthews wrote on 2004-12-21 19:17:59.0

Comments: My old friend Tom Reilly was killed in Korea in 1952. He and I went to school together in Chicago, along with another Buddy, Jack Doherty. We always think of Tom, and wonder what happened to him. We were both in the service in 1952 and were not home when he died. I was in the Army, later in Korea, Jack Doherty was in the Marines in Korea.

We would like to know what happened to Tom. We understand it was not a result of hostile action. Years ago, someone told me that he died in a bunker cave-in.

Would appreciate any information. His unit was Hq Btry, 2nd Bn, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.

Post Truce Signing - 2/11

Perhaps as an item of interest regarding the DMZ. After the
signing of the Armistice on july 27 1953 , I was assigned to the
1st Provisional Platoon ,the first of the DMZ watchers. We
occupied outposts Boston,Martini, and Cherry Herring. The Platoon
was made up of elements of the 7th Marines,11th Marines, and
Amtracks.

I served with the 2nd Battalion 11th Marines in Korea during
1953-1954 and with MACS3- 1st Marine Airwing in Korea during
1956-1957.

I could certainly identify with the statement about the telegram
or the unexpected visitor! Yhe platoon's mission was to hold off
any advance of CCF forces if they "jumped off" until units on the
other side of the Imjin river could mobilize.

Those were some interesting days! I have several other "war
stories" ,but I wont bore you with them (at least not yet!).

Thanks for the chat!

As you indicated there are many stories of that period ,some
painful and some more in a light vain,I try to recall the
lighter episodes whenever possible! Even some of the heavier
tales have a light side to them.

Toward the end of the shooting war( I dont recall the exact
dates) elements of the First and Seventh Marine Regiments
occupied the high ground on a hill aptly named Boulder
City. As a forward observer with the Eleventh Marines I
was attached to those units. We were attacked by units of the
CCF. Being heavily out numbered , it became necessary for me to
call in artillery fire on and around our own positions.

During the course of the battle more than ten thousand rounds of
105mm, 155mm, and 8inch rounds fell on the area, many from other
units such as Commonwealth forces. When the battle was over we
still held the high ground.

Later upon returning to my unit I was met by an officer from the
Commonwealth artillery unit involved. He presented me with a
"bill" for the artillery rounds expended. His "bill was for a
bottle of "spirits".

Being the generous souls that all Marines are , we gave him two
bottles of White Horse scotch. What he didn't know was that we
had received a full case of that scotch from the Canadian troops
just for showing them how to open bottles of Asahi beer with a
cocked forty five!
