Looking for Marines who knew my father

David Groves wrote on 2010-06-21 11:22:03.0

Comments: I'm looking for information on my father, Don Groves, who served in the 1/11 Marines. I'm also looking for help on research methods and sources, as the project is kind of intimidating.

My father, as far as I can tell, sailed over from Pendleton in August, 1950, then fought in the 1/11 in the Pusan Perimeter, was among the first two regiments at Inchon, helped retake Seoul, sailed into Wonsan, then moved up the MSR towards Chosin Reservoir, through Sudong, Hagaru, and Yudam-ni, where the s*it hit the fan.

Dad came down with frostbite in December, 1950, and was back in the States by March, 1951, where he met my mother and was married three months later. Always had pain in his feet. Died in 1989 of smoking-related illnesses.

We loved him dearly and I'm writing up a chronicle of his service for the grandchildren and future generations, for remembrance. If you have any information, feel free to contact me.

Comments: If anyone knows about my dad, John Gali, from the Big Island of Hawaii, please let me know of his character in youth and his main level of communicating with regular folks. I just want to know if I am living up to his level of right-ness and teaching my children to do the same. I hope so. He was in the Marines with a special force group of sea-diving guys that dove and set explosions and also diffused bombs-that was all he could talk about. He spent the rest of his life missing his brothers in the service and serving his community. He died fishing and fell down on a rock, hitting his head while looking for his net. I just know, he kept his identity and always looked back to you boys as his true home-can anyone find him for me-to let my children get a sense of his strength and here mine (and theirs) will come from?-Thank you for your help-Danielle

Tim Dixon wrote on 2007-12-03 10:12:47.0

Comments: I am looking for anyone that might have known my late father Floyd L. Dixon Ssgt USMC. Dad was with the Marines that landed in Puson and later Inchon. I believe he served under Chesty Puller. I am interested in knowing about how he was wounded. I have this citation for the bronze Star he receieved and I am looking for anyone that might have known him. His citation reads in part, as follows, if this helps:

"For heroic achievement while serving as a Property Sergeant of Headquarters Battery, First Battalion, 11th Marines, First Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy agressor forces in Korea on 4 December, 1950..."

Before Korea, he was a WWII Marine fighting throughout the South Pacific, joining the Marine Corps in 1939. In later years Dad was a member of the local chapter of the Chosin Few here in Oceanside CA, and returned to Korea with others in '93 for the Anniversary of the Inchon Landing.

Anyone out there that knew him I would sure like to hear from you. He passed away in 1995 and we still miss him terribly.

Comments: I'm sorry to say that I only now been able to come here and let those of you who knew my husband John Gali that he passed away less than two months afer he posted his last message. He died (June 5, 2006) from a massive heart attack right after he got done diving at South Point, Hawaii (The Southernmost Tip of the United States). He loved the ocean but he loved the Marines more. I remember there many were times he'd come home from a day of fishing at South Point and he'd say that he ran into another marine that remembered him in Korea taking a shower in the snow. He also ran into former marines when they would come to visit Hawaii and walk into the restaurant that John was playing music. He would be so excited when someone walked up to him and told him that they remembered him. John was fortunate to have died doing what he loved doing the most. He would always tell me that he would die at the ocean. Not everyone can choose the place where they are going to passaway. He did. He was layed to rest on Saturday, June 17, 2006 at the Naalehu Community Cemetary in his hometown. It will be a year that he passed away and it seems like he left us just yesterday. We will be remembering his life at a celebration on Saturday, June 17, 2007 starting at noon in the big pavillion down at Punaluu Beach Park. John may you rest in peace! We love you! John Gali: November 5, 1935 ~ June 5, 2006

On Dec 3 from Yudam-ni to Hagaru-ri two officers and about 8 enlisted (I was one of the enlisted) had to bring up the rear of the convoy to hold off an enemy company while pickup the kia. Comments: Seeking info about my father, MSgt. C.W. Greeson, who was wounded end of 1950 beginning of 1951. Would like to hear from any surviving friends of his as he passed away in 2000 and I have very little info about his stint in Korea. He also served in Tarawa/WWII (U.S. Colorado) if anyone remembers him from there as well. Don't know what unit/regiment he was in in either place. All I can find is letter from Headquarters, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division, FMF. Served in Quantico subsequently as Sergent Major. I am trying to obtain his medal for Korea for my brother and I'm having a lot of difficulty figuring all this out. Thank you so much.

Comments: Hello, My name is Ira Martin. I've recently began the task of documenting my Grandfather, Donald Martin "Marty"s involvement in Korea. He arrived in Korea April 1951' He was promoted to sergeant upon arrival and commanded the 1st division 11th regiment 1st Battalion Baker Battery (Gun #4?) and served till the truce talks stalemate July 1952'. Its recently come to my attention He may have fired in support of E-2-5 and or G-3-5. He recieved 6 medals altogether not/inc the new unissued Rok medal. He has yet to receive it. He is interested in any serious contacts from baker battery and any forward observers he might have encountered. He's sad the names are gone from memory; Even then, most were nicknames never to be used again off the Peninsula. I've begun documenting his divisions movements during his service with what limited resources I can get. Any Information or Resources would be greatly appreciated and reciprocal if wanted. I've got a couple maps off the web and some random references to the Marines 11th Artillery in some actual diary like info and military docs. My Grandfather has some amazing stories and even more I'd like Help to unlock. My recent interest has already begun to get things going. If interested or know of my Grandfather please contact me imartin@nycap.rr.com for additional contact info. Any Information will be extremely appreciated. I look forward to a serious response. Sincerely, Ira L Martin

Comments: I am looking for information to assist in verifying details and /or provide "buddy statements", for my Dad in his case with VA.

My Dad's name is William (Bill) Raymond Carman. He was a Sergeant in Service Battery 1st Bn. 11th Marine Regiment. He was in country January 1951 to January 1952. He worked in one of the S-Shops, perhaps the S-4. His Sergeant Major was Robert Troust(sp) at the time. Sergeant Jim Graves, of Kansas City, MO. was also a member of this unit. Lt. John Darty (sp) of Los Angles, former HS football coach, was the OIC. In May/June thru August 1951 he and others were attached to an 8in Howitzer Battery.

I pulled this informtion from a tape my dad made in 1982. If there are any fellow Marines out there that knew my dad please contact me so I can get you and him connected.

Many, Many Thanks to all.

Bill Carman

Comments: I am a Desert Storm Marine looking for any one who may have served with or Knew Sgt. Clifford Dean Meece. In 1986 we had a house fire which destroyed all of my fathers uniforms, medals & pictures. Some real good ones of the prisoner exchange, the fire base, and buddies.I never knew why he would get mad when I would look into his cedar chest and at all his memories until I had my own chest opened up by someone other than myself. I guess that if I would've listened I never would have found his "Guidebook for Marines" and decided to follow in his footsteps. On a sad note, on May 19 2001, my father passed away from Pancreatic Cancer, gone is the best Marine I have ever known. I would like to say to all you Korean Marines that I surely will never forget you or the sacrifice you made & the proud history that you all have left for all Marines. "Semper Fi"

If anyone can identify the others of my battery, I would really like to contact them. Fifty years is a long time but I am sure there must be some still alive. We lost about a third of the battery in the first 7 months out of the about 160? people. I have a lot of "sea stories" to swap (it sure was cold in the Chosin Res. area)

I had a good friend missing when we came out of the Chosin reservoir
in Dec. 1950. His name started with God I believe it was Godfeller
(its been a long time) He was in the radio section of H&S company
1st Marine Reg., 1st Marine Division. I was told he got up on the
last tanks coming out and the tanks didn't make it. I am wondering
if he is listed as KIA or MIA?

There were not many marines who had a last name starting with God.
Any info you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Leland may have been his first name, the date is correct. You didn't
say if he was listed as kia or mia, maybe no one knows for sure. I
remember him in 1949 at Camp Lejune, NC he would sing on long field
marches. He was a easy going and good natured Marine.

The information attached is for my father who served at what he calls
the "Punchbowl" from Jan '51 through Feb of '52. He worked on a 105mm
Howitzer of which I am constantly looking for pictures. I'm sure he
would enjoy contact with other vets; he is recently widowed and retired.

Any contact would be appreciated.

I was with A Battery, 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, First Marine Division
for the last 6-months of the war. I then transferred the 1st
Provisional Demiliterized Zone Police Company where I was a platoon
sergeant of a reconnaissance platoon that patrolled the DMZ.

Regarding the post shooting DMZ period; The 1st Provisional DMZ Police
Company was charged with the patrolling of the former western front line
from Panmunjom to the Hook, a former British Commonwealth Division
position.

The section of front we patrolled was 28-miles in length and was 2000
meters deep. I don't know if it is true or not, but I was told at the
time that the Marines were the only unit that patrolled right up to the
demarcation line as opposed to the southern boundry of the DMZ.

I think it had something to do with our proximity to Panmunjom and the
Truce Corridor and the large prisoner of war camp operated by the Indian
Army. We had to pass through the camp to get to several of our
checkpoints.

We also escorted the prisoners during the Big Switch operation, where
they chose where they wanted to go, back to North Korea or China, or to
Taiwan.

We didn't have the firefights that occured later in the 60s and 70s, but
we did have casualties from mines and accidents. The winter was
especially dangerous because of the treacherous, icy mountain roads
which we had to drive to get to our patrol bases situated on some rather
bleak mountain tops.
