Creating A Tribute to My Dad

Comments: My father, CPL Eugene Joseph Roberson, served in Korea and recently lost his battle with cancer. Comments: My father-in-law is George Sanchez who served in the Vietnam war from 1963-1965. I don't know much about his Army experiences, because he didn't talk about it with us. On a letter that he wrote to my mother, I got the information that he was in the 321st Ordnance Recovery Co. and the 330th Ordnance Battalion and at that time stationed at Camp Pickett,Va. I can't find anything out about these Ordnances and was hoping someone would see this and help me out with some information. My dad was from Pike county Ky and is now deceased. He died in 1984. Comments: I know the "point system" by which the army discharged soldiers toward the end of WW II -- the more points, the quicker you got out. What was the system for the Korean War? If a soldier started service in July, 1950, did he have to fight the whole war before he could get out? Was there a "time in country" as there was in Vietnam? While crossing a rice paddy they drew fire from both sides,and Walt turned to see his friend get shot in the stomach.

Walt carried him for about a hundred yards to the woods,where Eddie died.

Comments: I have posted several times over the years with no results....maybe this will be the time someone from one of these units will read this message. I served at FT. Bragg OJT in Sept. 1959 and was sent to Seoul Korea 1960-1961 and was Company Clerk with the US B&VA 1960. A compound off MSR just north of the 8th army compound, Yonsan. We also worked under the UN VUNC Radio and wore the neck scarf bearing the UN Symbol. At first we wore the "Torii" shoulder patch of Okinawa which was our headquarters along with Japan. The Korean govt. ask we remove the patch as it represented the shrines that they had to bow to during the Japanese Occupation, we then wore the 8th Army Patch. I was also with the 19th Army Postal Unit, APO 301 during first part of 1961. Would like to hear from anyone that I might have served with during this time. My grandchildren are just now asking about my military time and I try to explain the history as to why we were in that country at that time. History books in the schools give two pages on the Korean War. So little is known of this era by presnt day students.

What was my father's unit like?

Comments: I am searching information on my father's unit and possible action in the Korean War. I know he was part of the 7th Inf. Btn., but do not know the specific unit or even what his job designation was. If memory serves, he was in Korea starting in 1951. His name is Don Powell from Boulder,Montana. He told me little about his time in Korea other than the occasional trip to I Corps to "borrow" rations or the time he captured a Chineese soldier whose weapon jammed after the first round (wich passed through dad's coat sleeve, just missing his arm). I feel that alot of what happend to him there, molded the rest of his life. HAROLD 'RED' E. RIDER

Comments: I am looking for information on my father, Harold "Red" E. Rider from Illinois. I was 17 when he passed away in 1980 from Leukemia and did not even realize that he had been in the Korean War until much later in life. He and my mother were divorced when I was real small so weekend visits were obviously not enough time to tell me or maybe he just didn't want to discuss it. It may have also been because I was a girl. I don't know, but I don't even know what battalion he was in, what dates he served, or where he was stationed. The only information I have on him so far is that he fought in the korean war and world war 2,he started out as an infantry man and then worked his way up to Lt., he was awarded man great medals through out his career in the malitary and was also wounded 5 different times in combat. Comments: Donald Gordon Hillier served in Korea..time frame unknown..was wounded in legs by machine gun fire, but not disabled.
