Keywords: Looking for anyone that may have served in the Korean war 1951 -1953? with my father Chet Hanratty of Worcester, Massachusetts. I don't have much info but I belive he was attached to a National Guard unit from Wheeling West Virginia, I belive it was a combat Engineer unit, he was a motorpool sargent.

Dad did not talk to much about his unit or any specific events, but he said he served with a great bunch of guys who were dedicated soliders during very adverse and difficult times. I know he came home after being badley burned and recovered at a hospital in Fort Dix, NJ.

Comments: I am trying to find out information about my Dad's military service as he has passed on and his records were destroyed in a fire in St. Louis. He served in the Army at Kadena in Okinawa. I think it was in 1953-54. He served with a catholic chaplain by the name of Fr. Stephen Janto. He helped out some missionaries and also served as an alter boy. He was born on March 17, 1926. He is from Woburn, MA, but lived in NJ as well. He previously served in WWII.

I am his only child and am trying to help my Mom who is 80 to preserve his memory. Any information is greatly appreciated.

He was sometimes called Joe or JT. I can't remember his unt or where he served. I do remember him talking about a friend who was a Native-American he called Brown. Does anyone remember him? Thank you for this to learn more about him on this page. Thank you all for the service you showed for your country and it's people. We will never forget you. Sincerely, Annita.

LOOKING FOR INFO: HORACE

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Cindy Voikin wrote on 2005-07-20 00:00:00.0

Comments: I am searching for any information on my grandfather, retired Maj. Horace "Jack" Houghton. He, too, refused to talk about either war and only told me a little bit about non-combat posts. I know he lied to get into the Marines and qualify for the GI bill, they found out, kicked him out cause he was too young. He used to laugh and tell me it served him right cause he later missed out on two years of Social Security. Then, he got some college under his belt - THAT was an interesting story, as apparently he was quite handsome and a bit of a rouge - and became an officer in the Army. He retired with the pay of a Lt. Colonel and the rank of Major. I do not know the timetable of his service. He especially did not like to talk about Korea - he told me it was a bloodbath and too many good men died. He mentioned the Philipines and McArthur - not too fondly, he was the head of the MPs for McArthur. He was in occupied Japan near Mt. Fuji because there was a picture of him in uniform at the house the family lived in with Mt. Fuji in the background. I know he knew the actress, Brenda Vacarro's father because my mother told me they were playmates as children. He was also stationed in Ft. Stewart fairly early in his career, I believe. In France in the mid-fifties. And, I believe he finished up his career at Ft. Dix in the late 50's. I actually was rushed to the hospital at McGuire AFB for a bad burn when I was an infant - probably 1963. Oh, and he rode horses at some point in the military 'cause it rubbed off all the hair on his inner thighs - I thought it was quite amusing as a child to see him in shorts!

I am interested in ANY info and if anyone knew him or my grandmother, Mary. She was quite beautiful and had been Miss Illinois.

We had been working together on his family history but we got side tracked and never made it back to it. He passed away in December 2003. I would very much like to continue with the work we began on his military experiences in the Korean War. I do not even know what unit he was from. I do have many pictures that he took. Is there anything in those that could give me a clue? Would his medals give me any ideas? I would love to talk to anyone who might have known him. Any help you may be able to give would be appreciated. Thank you and Bless you all for what you have given to us.

Comments: In my heart I always loved him. Yet I never had a chance to meet or even see him. You see, he was engaged to my mother Jannis Christopher and died with my baby picture in his front pocket next to his heart. I was born in December 1952 and he was killed in April 1953. The way I understand it, he kept volunteering for more and more dangerous missions so he could come home sooner. His plan was to come home and be my father, as my own father all but abandoned us. His memory has haunted me my whole life. I miss him every day. My mother by some coincidence married a man with the same last name (his cousing I think) years later, so at least I have always carried his last name. If anyone knows ANYTHING about him or could help me locate his family or a picture of him I would be eternally grateful.

But, before that I clearly remember boucing on his chest and seeing scares on his side and his chest and him telling me that he got shot first in Korea and was told he can go back to the states but he said no he didn't want to leave his Buds behind so he became a cook and they made him a Sargent. Before the end of the war his men were in a battle for few straight days of firing without stopping both sides ran out of ammo. so they went after eachother with bayonnets and he got stabbed in the side but thank GOD for our brave men he lived to tell me about it.But by the time I got mature enough to truely understand what he and our men gone through he was out of my life,forever....I wish that I can find some info on his military career without needing a credit card to log on to some of these links to help you for a fee...The way I look at it my dad paid my fee along time ago already for all Americans!!!!! Comments: He was a sargent. He went in upon graduation 1952 from high school. He did his his basic and then was shipped over seas. He caught the tail end of the war. He went on to serve two tours with the UN peacekeeping troops or so I was told. In 1961 with a wife and three kids he went AWOLand left us. He came back to us 2 years later and that has been the mystery of our lives. Where was he and how do we find out. I want to know. He was stationed in Ft. Louis at that time and prior to that Fort Jackson, S.C.

Comments: I am looking for anyone who remembers my father, James William "Bill" Marsh. He had just joined the National Guard (45th) in Oklahoma when it was mobilized to Korea. His discharge papers list his most significant unit assignement as Hq Co 180th Infantry Regiment and that he won the Bronze Star. The back of one of his photos shows him with a security and recon platoon. I would like to here from anyone who served with my dad and especially about the action for which he recieved the star.

Comments: I am looking for my father, Arthur Elmer Black. I have not seen him since 1972. I do not know what branch of service or what unit he served in; I only know that he met my mother, Dorothy Virgine, in Missouri while he was stateside. She died in 2003. I would like to hear from him and possibly get to know him, if he is interested.
