Comments: I may be too old for my group 56 years ago - but I'll give it a shot -
I was A/1c crypto - worked rotating shifts 24/7 in comm center 12/57 thru 2/59. Served with S/Sgt Crouch, Bill Magoteaux, Don Deaton, SMS Setzer, Willie Grant, Willie Beaty, Neil Mcpherson and many more. Anyone remember the big blizzard of late Dec 58-early Jan 59 that nearly covered the base? 50 below 0, 30 ft snow - most of it still there till late March. Would love to hear from you!

Naturally, I welcome contact by all
-- but if Jake Till (1950s Youngstown OH) contacts me, I'll reimburse him for the case of fruit juice he provided at K-55.

Does anyone else remember our buddy at K-53 -- allegedly, the accident report claims -- traveling five miles per hour at time of impact with stone wall -- distance travelled thereafter six-hundred-twenty-five feet (of course, it was all downhill) -- jeep totaled. Fortunately, driver escaped with only minor injuries. -- One of my treasurers is a picture of him sitting in the ruined jeep.

Comments: From Lackland AFB to Scott AFB where I went to ground radio school in 1952-53. From Scott to Brooks AFB repo depot. From Brooks, it was an assignment to 15th RSM In Ashiya, Japan, where I was assigned to an attachment on PYdo, Korea (K53) Ten months later, the assignment was at March AFB, working in the USAFSS lab. Someone decided that I needed
crypto training, so I was sent to Wash DC and enrolled in a crypto school by Bendix. After crypto training, I was no longer needed, so they offered me an early out, which I accepted.
My tour of duty was 3 years, 10 months and 17 days.

It is on Amazon as a Kindle and on Infinity Books as soft cover. I really recommend it. Amazon gives it 5 stars.

Comments: Arrived at Osan In April 1959 and worked out of semi-trucks while they were finishing the concrete block facility on the Hill. First night on the mid-shift I was given a .45 semi to guard the back gate. What the h---? Didn't know the back from the front and never handled a .45. Lived in Quonsets - third one south of the latrine - my houseboy was Pak Su San who would swab the plywood deck with stove oil to keep the dust down.. Worked intercept for a time then translation. I was there when a NK fighter shot up a US Navy elint plane from Japan. That major was gone the next day. Best friends were Mike Hubert, Gary Walter and Dick Auger. Was offered Blue Sky but turned it down. They were building the concrete block barracks across the road when I left in 1960. Does anyone else remember the landing mat bridge across the drain ditch on the way to the snack bar named the Huey P. Long Bridge? F-100's were operational at that time. I see A-10's on the runway now via Google Earth. Of course the base and Osan are totally unrecognizable now. Enjoyed my tour - liked the work and had good friends. Visited China in '06 and had a ball. It was amazing how much Mandarin I remembered. It kept coming back to me after all these 50 years. Really impressed the young ladies - oh to be young again.

WHAT CAN I SAY?

ROBIN SCHMIDT wrote on October 13, 2012

City and State: MERCER ISLAND WA

Unit: UNKNOWN

Service or Relationship: FRIEND OF VETERAN

Comments: Yesterday I posted on here asking for help to find an
artifact or gift I could give to my friend, Ron Vernon,
from his time served in the US Air Force at Darmstadt,
Germany, during Korean War times.

Something AMAZING happened when I went to pick up Ron
today. He told me he had just gotten off the phone with
someone who also served at Darmstadt, (but was there a
few years after Ron was). The guy was from Florida and
talked to Ron about his time in the Air Force. I have
NO IDEA what the mans name was, or how he even got
Ron's phone number. The guy just said your angel,
Robin, guided me to you. I'm completely dumbfounded
and saying Thank you God because as Ron said this
made me so INCREDIBLY HAPPY that someone all the way
from Florida would reach out to me.

Whoever you are .... THANK YOU, and PLEASE contact me
(and if you know who it was, please tell them to
contact me as well.) I don't have any emails or contact
from anyone, so I am completely in the dark. I have
only posted on here and one other website ... so I know
there are Korean War Veterans out there who are needing
the comfort of one another and reading what I am
writing. Thank you ALL for your valiant service ....
YOU ARE REMEMBERED, I PROMISE.

And if any of you want Ron's number, I will happily
provide it to you. This is just the weirdest thing
ever ... and by the way, I am still trying to find
something to commemorate his time in the military for
his 80th birthday, so if any of you have ideas, please
share. Thanks again.

I NEED HELP ... FOR A 3 STRIPE BUCK SGT

ROBIN SCHMIDT wrote on October 12, 2012

City and State: MERCER ISLAND WA

Unit: UNKNOWN

Service or Relationship: FRIEND OF VETERAN

Comments: A dear friend of mine, Ron Vernon,(like a 2nd dad)is
turning 80 on Halloween. In my most recent visit with
him, he told me all about his time in the Air Force
(from 1950-54). He served during Korean War times, but
he was stationed in Darmstadt, Germany the last two
years. For whatever reason (he would not tell me), when
they found out they were coming home, all of them took
their uniforms and put them in a big pile and burnt
them. His job was Ground Radio Intercept Operator. He
was 3 Stripe Buck SGT, in one of the units that wore
the 1st Blue Uniforms and was in one of the 1st all
Blue Parades. I asked him if he had ANYTHING at all to
honor his service to our country and he said no, I
really do regret that. So I am wondering if any of you
can help me to find SOMETHING from Darmstadt or have
anything from the Air Force (just a little pin or a
Korean War artifact) that I could give to him. I know
it is a long shot, but I know there are people on here
from all over the world (current military included).

For the past 10 years I have become very involved with
supporting our deployed service members, Veterans, and
Wounded Warriors ~ and it is very important to me to
find a way to honor Ron's service. If you can help, it
would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much,
Robin
