SCARWAF HISTORY OF 822ND |
| EARL TUTT LAMBERT wrote on October 6, 2011 City and State: LOVELAND OH Unit: 822ND ENG. AV. BN. Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: I have a recently published book on SCARWAF units during the Korean War. The major focus begins with the 822nd Engineer Aviation Battalion while stationed on Okinawa when the war began. A diary maintained by Captain Walker Bradshaw, West Point '48, until his death, has been utilized to compile this history of what we undermanned and under-equipped engineers accomplished throughout the war. Over eighty former soldiers, airmen, pilots and related family survivors were interviewed and their stories are told in the book. The 822nd is traced from Pusan to their brief stay in Pyongyang, North Korea and their hasty escape from there. A section describes an ambush by North Koreans. A detailed account of the construction of the many airfields and the problems encountered illustrates the difficulties these men faced at Pusan, Taegu, Pyongyang and other locations in Korea. The book was published by Little Miami Books, Water Street, Milford, Ohio 45150. Also, the book may be ordered from the author, Tutt Lambert, 1443 Nauticus Cove, Loveland, Ohio 45140 Tel: 513-683- 0027 Keywords: All SCARWAF Engineers in Korea, 1950-54 |

804TH EAB GREENHAM COMMON, UK |
| PETER BENTON wrote on June 4, 2009 City and State: BRICK NJ Unit: 804TH EAB Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: I was stationed at RAF Greenham Common from Aug. 1955 to Aug. 1957, as a construction surveyor. We were in the process of rebuilding the SAC base runway at this location. I remember being out there on top of that hill setting grades with a dumpy level in all kinds of English weather; building and flying control line planes with some of the gang; being invited to join the local bicycle club; taking the train into the "Big L" to see shows, etc. I'm currently communicating with some members of that bicycle club with whom I rode all those years ago. I retired after 50 years of surveying, and am a ride captain with a local bicycle club, volunteer at a railroad museum, and build model trains from recycled "stuff". I owe a lot of this to my experience with the 804th, and would gladly do it over again! Keywords: Ed Adams, Charlie Williams, Don Nelson, Wolf Vorbau, Doug Brown, Col. Tate |

SCARWAF EXPLAINED |
| JACK C. PAULSON wrote on November 12, 2007 City and State: WICHITA KS Unit: H-S CO. 802ND EAB (SCARWAF) Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: Since I have not found in the web site an explanation of the SCARWAF designation that is the reason I decided to write this paragraph. The USAF became a separate branch of service in 1947, but until the mid to late 1950's there remained instances of certain types of units required by the USAF, but not yet formed under the USAF "banner". The Army Engineer Heavy Equipment Battalion was one such type unit and were designated Engineer Aviation Battalion when assigned to the Air Force and were called Special Category Army With Air Force. The 802nd EAB, in which I served, was manned with both AF and Army personnel, thus the strange slang name "purple outfit" when on a parade field. JCPaulson Keywords: I had no combat, stationed Itizuke, AFB, Japan, May '54 to March '55, then a 1LT Army. In the Maintenance Company we were honored to have a First Sergeant (Army) who had won the Congressional Medal of Honor during WWII. His name was Paul B. Huff and it was said that SGT Huff could get just about anything he asked for at Itazuke AFB at the time, but he was modest and made no "waves" that I knew about. I knew of no time that he would talk about his action that won the CMOH, but he told about some of his exploits in basic training. |
