I was RAF NCO i/c the Plant that demolished the old Hospital in 1960 and if you see my website: www.rafacb.org / Gallery / Wimpole Park there are many photographs on the site of buildings / map etc when in use / the demolition / and how it is today which will interest you.

I also run 2 other ex RAF websites: www.nsrafa.org and www.rafhednesford.org. Enjoy.

Good luck to all across the Pond !!

Comments: I WAS STATIONED AT BIGGS AIR FORCE BASE FROM EARLY 1950 TO NOV. 1952. I WAS A RADIO OPERATOR ON A DESIGNATED A-BOMB CREW. AIRCRAFT COMMANDER: MAJ. WALTER M. CECIL. I WAS STATIONED AT SCULTHORPE AND LAKENHEATH DURING OUR TWO TOURS TO ENGLAND, 1950 TO 1952.WE FLEW 18 HOUR MISSIONS, UNDER SIMULATED WARTIME CONDITIONS (MEANING WE HAD TO SURVIVE ON PARTS CARRIED FROM EL PASO). WE FLEW THE IRON CURTAIN PERIMETER FROM NORWAY TO GIBRALTER, REFUELED IN AIR, AND RETURNED TO ENGLAND. I HAD A LOT OF RADIO AND RADAR JAMMING EQUIPMENT IN THE RADIO COMPARTMENT AND MY JOB WAS TO JAM THE HELL OUT OF SIGNALS RECEIVED FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CURTAIN. WE LOST MEN AND AIRCRAFT (AS I REMEMBER, 37 MEN AND 7 AIRPLANES) BETWEEN 1950 AND 1952 AND WE WEREN'T EVEN FIGHTING ANYBODY. IT WAS GREAT DUTY AND PROVIDED A LIFETIME OF MEMORIES.

Comments: Sir, I am resaerching photos and information concerning the 97th Bomb Wing deployment to Lakenheath and Mildenhall during March to May 1952. The information is required for a book about B-29/B-50 deployments to the U.K, 1947-1953. When the 97th visited the U.K in 1952,the B-50's were carrying tailcode " Triangle O ". To my Knowledge this was the only time that the Unit carried tail codes during its three visits. The three squadrons carried colours and some were noted with names. 340th-Red, 48-067 " City of San Fernando ", 48-087, " City of Chattanooga ". 341st-blue. 49-261 " City of Elwood ". 342nd-yellow, 48-101 " City of Detroit " Wing and squadron insignia was carried along with the 8th AF insignia. I will be extremely grateful for any photos to borrow and any information concerning the training and exercise missions. Sincerely, R.Robinson.

Comments: I am looking for information about my father. He retired as M/Sgt Eullen Trotter from Dow AFB in Feb, 1962. But, he often told me about his time with the 97th Bomb Group. I know he was with them when I was born in June, 1952 at Fort Bliss. I'm not sure when he arrived at Biggs but we moved to Kelly at the end of 1952. My father was a flight engineer on the B-50 at the time.

I'm not looking for anything specific or even necessarily about my Dad. Just knowing things like where he was at in England, how long he was gone, and what Biggs was like would be interesting.

If any of you did know him, he died on Dec 27, 1987 after a heart bypass. He was a good Dad.

Comments: I joined 341st at Biggs Field about April 1949 as an aircraft electrician. CO then was LC Umfeld. Senior NCOs remembered were M/Sgt Sawyer, Line Chief, TSgts Harold Lindstrom, electrician, Sera Pererra, Instrument technician. Crew Chiefs Rehorst and Gilson. From ordnance shop, Newt(Chief)Lamar. I made the deployment to UK in 1950 with B-50s. Some maintenance types were detached from the squadron to make up 3364th Tech Support Group. I was with this group and a portion of us were left at Sculthorpe while the 341st went on down to Valley, Wales and later to Bassingbourn. It was at Bassingbourn that the B-50 was lost. Of casual interest - somehow the Enola Gay showed up on the ramp there at Biggs and the 341st hosted her. I think she was enroute to Wright-Patterson for the museum and had a maintenance problem. I was discharged from the the Airforce in Nov.,1951. I got a couple of years of college under my belt and then became a Naval Aviator flying seaplanes and later P3 Orions. During Viet Nam action, I would occasionally cross paths with B-52s going in or returning from missions over Nam. Possibly 97th units flying B-52s? I would be interested in chatting with any one from the squadron during that period.
