Comments: My name is John (Bob) R Hemauer I was a S/Sgt and member of the 93rd bomb sqd, 19th bomb grp from 1950 to 1952. I was ncoic of the 93rd personal equiptment section on the flightline at Kadena AFB Okinawa. My job was issuing flight gear to our air crews and refilling the oxygen systems of our B-29s. Two guys that I worked with were Hugh F Poyer of Boulder Co. and David E McDougall of Bangor ME. Our OIC was Gorden T Caldwell Lt. of Avon Ct. and was also co pilot of the B-29 "Rock Happy". While visiting the SAC museum in Omaha Ne. a few years ago, I found a book titled "B-29 Photo Combat Diary. The Superfortresses in WWII and Korea. Written by Chester W Marshall and Warren Thompson. Published by Specialty Press, 11481 Kost Dam Rd, North Branch Mn. 55056 Ph 612-583-3239. You will find me on page 130 driving my tug with oxygen bottle trailers. What a suprise that was, seeing my self in that book. The following is a list of B-29s by tail number for those who might be interested, 44-62002,44-27262,44-87734,42-65370,44-70007,44-69802,44-6 2053,42-65361,44-61705,44-70012,44-61790. Subject: Book Announcement - NO SWEAT by Bud Farrell, B-29 Gunner Korea 1952

"If you don't laugh and cry at times within moments of each other while reading this - as I did while writing it - I will be disappointed!" Bud Farrell

"I have essentially finished reading NO SWEAT...I found it refreshingly different from most books because it is constructed in such a way that one can read an article, look at photos, news clippings, and other items without losing continuity. In other words, it is easy to read. The book is well written and does not contain most of the typos found in other self -published books. You are to be congratulated on your attention to detail that resulted in an excellant end product. Your memory must be superb." - Lucien Thomas, The "Gunner's Gunner"... with 400 Missions with The R.A. F. & USAF 8th Air Force WW II, The 19th Bomb Group & 13th Bomb Group Korea, Vietnam

?NAMSAN-NI?What an excitingly told tale. Your ability to tell a story is a wonderful gift. You bring it to life as if we were really there!?

Jean Allen, WW II B-29 Combat Crewmember - WAS really there!

BUD LIGHT - ??I laughed my ass off. Great stuff, if the rest of the book is as good, it should be a best seller.? ?Don MacHenry, Graphic Artist, New Kensington, Pa.

?OH BABY! I was right there?rocking in my chair to gain momentum?go GO! GOOOOOOOOOOO!!! What an excellent piece?EVERYBODY STAND UP?you made it so real?amazed at how you can vividly describe so much! I almost feel like I am sitting on your shoulder, feeling what you feel, taking in all your emotions. Oh what a wonderful work!! I love you my HUBBA HUBBA GUNNER!? Susan Bryan, Lt. US Army, Poet/Writer, Computer Artist I said in the NO SWEAT Book Mark that I hoped that readers might laugh and cry within moments of each other - as I did while writing it....and now I have heard that from just one person so far and that is quite enough...but I had heard the same from a young woman at the copy shop in Durango 3 years ago who kept a copy of the original manuscript...but what does a woman know about war...just her husband, sons, sisters, fathers, brothers, cousins, daughters... her very heart and soul that she gives up...that's ALL!! April 12 - Kimpo

Jack Morris wrote on 2003-08-30 09:01:28.0

Comments: I was on the landing strip assigned as a crash photographer this unforgetable day and saw the sky go dark with aircraft headed North on April 12, 1951. I recall only B-29s in tight formation and they made a combined noise on the ground of one steady roar. I seem to remember it took about 30 minutes before the last of these bombers had disappeared from my view.

We were told they were headed for the border with China. It is my guess it was the last true air armada, the greatest since World War II.

Several hours later our public address system at K-2 began announcing "May Day!" and we with cameras were told to Jeep it out to the tarmac as the first of the crippled aircraft came limping in at about 1,000 feet and in our direction.

The first bomber barely made it over a distant knoll of a hill and was trailing smoke from one or more of its 4 engines. No wheels were down as it slowly approached the steel grating of our runways. Fire engines and several ambulances waited with their operators at the ready. I had a SpeedGraphic 4x5" camera and began shooting my pictures.

This first aircraft hit the grating in a perfect flat glide and began breaking up as it slid past me, scooted sideways, slid some more, and stopped.

The plane was little more than a beer can full of holes and black smoke continued to billow out of several dead engines. I saw no fire and so approached the aircraft on foot along with the emergency personnel. One of the pilots was dead, the tail gunner had been ripped out of his little work space and was not part of the aircraft we found on the ground. I had only a few minutes to see what I could before the public address speakers called out a second "May Day!" and warned us that it, too, was approaching from the North.

A road building tractor came up to the side of the first aircraft and quickly shoved it off the tarmac. The steel grating was clear of wreckage only a minute or so when the second bomber came in over the hill. We on the ground repeated our tasks for this second one and, for what I can barely recall, three or four other aircraft, as well - each damaged and carrying what was left of its dead and injured crew members.

Blood and body parts covered the interiors of these aircraft. Gaping holes made by cannon rounds made it seem impossible that and of these planes had remained airborne.

I believe my pictures of these crashes on April 12, 1951 and the pictures of S/Sgt Michael Russo, may be found in Air Force archives in Washington DC. I have no pictures to share, sorry to say, except for the one in my diary displayed in Barker's Korean War Project.

Comments: This aircraft is at the bottom of the E.China Sea. I was a B-29 Top Gunner returning from N.Korea, lost 3 engines and ditched 9 miles from Okinawa, Kadena AFB. Oct.31,1952. Only 3 survived the two hour ordeal in the ocean, during one of Okinawa's famous typhoons.

I spent 2 weeks in the hospital and then went back to flying more combat missions, no, I'm not a hero, I had no choice! but everything worked out okay. I'm married, 5 kids, 14 grandchildren and 1 Great-grand -daughter.

If you told me, back then, that I would have this many kids and grandchildren, you know what I'd say, (you'r full of S---!)But I thank God for this blessing and for my life.

Comments: Hi… I am the "archivist" for my family…Long story short…my Dad passed away and I have a lot of his photo's and articles… (My Uncle was also shot down in Nam)I am familiar with a lot of my Dad's career and have been piecing it together…however, I don't know anything of his bomb era and would like to tackle that area next…perhaps somebody can point me in the right direction? My Dad was Col J C Seagroves (aka Conny), he flew the SR71. But his earlier days are photos by a sign that includes "449th Bombardment Wing" "716th Bomb Squad" "908th Refueling Squad" Another set of photos from 67th Bomb Sq 44th Bm. Wg…… Patches that I haven't figured out are 449th Bombardment Wing 93rd Bomb Sqdn (has an indian) and a Pelican with a missile.

Also, in looking at the stamp on the back of some photos I am now learning about the 600th photo squad- all fascinating to me! Dad wasn't a photographer but has a few shots from the 600th and also from a SSGT Ron Smith 7th AF DXI….

I have some photos that are "after hours" that are a hoot-can't figure out who/where...My guess is Kadena....

Exhibits include many firsts for enlisted personnel; gunners, jumpers, engineers, aircraft death (Frank Scott, ref Scott AFB), and many other recognitions. AF Medal of Honor citations, Air Force Cross citations, enlisted pilots, and many celebrities that served as Air Force enlisted personnel. However, there is not one item on in-flight refueling operators of any kind. Do you know of any enlisted personnel that participated in the development and testing of in flight refueling equipment and operations starting in 1946 and continuing to the present? Please contact me so we can honor those who gave the Air Force a great "force multiplier". Who has the original SMSGT Al Evans Award? Fess-up! Thanks, Jim Harris

I was with 93rd bomb squadron, 19th bomb group, FEAF stationed at
Kadena. My name is Neil Stouffer Airman First Class. My nickname was
Pierre.

I am interested in hearing from anyone who was in Korea from 1951 to
1952. I was stationed at Kadena and was a second fire control gunner.

We flew missions over Korea. Tail gunner was Jimmy Myers, one gunner
was Joe Macullough, Frank Pelzel was the radio operator. One pilot was
named Capt. Durand. Do these names ring a bell with anyone. We lost a
co-pilot who was called Tex maybe named Scotty actually.

I flew on several B29's including the 'Outlaw' which crashed at the end
of the runway around Oct 51 with Cspt Donanan (I think). "Boys we best
get out of this son of a bitch, she's on fire".

One of the gunners was Noble Walker, second Luitenant Scotty (Tex)
Thompson, who died in Korea.

This was the B29 group moved from Guam, and we were the first "relief"
group. The original group from Guam had a long period waiting for us to
get trained.

I would like to contact any of my old crew members:
A/C Grieffendorf from Michigan
Pilot Lundquist from Minnesota
Bombadier Dan Rose from Tulsa, OK
ECM The Professor, I can't think of his name now
Radio Johnson from L.A.
Flight Engineer Wallace M. Cox of Ft. Worth TX
Right Gunner Charles Wiscavage (Overly) of Calif.
Left Gunner Richard M. Mercier of Minnesota I think
Tail Gunner Howell of Grand Rapids MI.

I was CFC (top gunner) and I am

Hope to hear from anyone. We went over in Aug. 1951 and returned in
March or April or 1952. We brought back a B29 from Tokyo to Travis AFB
when we returned.
