APRIL 12 - KIMPO |
| JACK MORRIS wrote on August 30, 2003 City and State: LOOMIS CA Unit: 363RD RTS, 5TH AF Service or Relationship: AIR FORCE VETERAN - KOREA Comments: I was on the landing strip assigned as a crash photographer this unforgetable day and saw the sky go dark with aircraft headed North on April 12, 1951. I recall only B-29s in tight formation and they made a combined noise on the ground of one steady roar. I seem to remember it took about 30 minutes before the last of these bombers had disappeared from my view. We were told they were headed for the border with China. It is my guess it was the last true air armada, the greatest since World War II. Several hours later our public address system at K-2 began announcing "May Day!" and we with cameras were told to Jeep it out to the tarmac as the first of the crippled aircraft came limping in at about 1,000 feet and in our direction. The first bomber barely made it over a distant knoll of a hill and was trailing smoke from one or more of its 4 engines. No wheels were down as it slowly approached the steel grating of our runways. Fire engines and several ambulances waited with their operators at the ready. I had a SpeedGraphic 4x5" camera and began shooting my pictures. This first aircraft hit the grating in a perfect flat glide and began breaking up as it slid past me, scooted sideways, slid some more, and stopped. The plane was little more than a beer can full of holes and black smoke continued to billow out of several dead engines. I saw no fire and so approached the aircraft on foot along with the emergency personnel. One of the pilots was dead, the tail gunner had been ripped out of his little work space and was not part of the aircraft we found on the ground. I had only a few minutes to see what I could before the public address speakers called out a second "May Day!" and warned us that it, too, was approaching from the North. A road building tractor came up to the side of the first aircraft and quickly shoved it off the tarmac. The steel grating was clear of wreckage only a minute or so when the second bomber came in over the hill. We on the ground repeated our tasks for this second one and, for what I can barely recall, three or four other aircraft, as well - each damaged and carrying what was left of its dead and injured crew members. Blood and body parts covered the interiors of these aircraft. Gaping holes made by cannon rounds made it seem impossible that and of these planes had remained airborne. I believe my pictures of these crashes on April 12, 1951 and the pictures of S/Sgt Michael Russo, may be found in Air Force archives in Washington DC. I have no pictures to share, sorry to say, except for the one in my diary displayed in Barker's Korean War Project. Jack Morris AF 19328825 Sgt - Korea (1950-1952) Keywords: Kimpo, K-2 |

I knew Allen as "Bud". I just found two letters that Bud wrote to me when I was 11 years old. The last one is dated four days before his plane went down. That was 50 years ago. He was hoping to get home in June, 1951. According to the envelope we found, Allen "Bud" Dinger was in the 93rd Bomb Squadron, 19th Bomber Group. He flew out of Kadena AFB in Okinawa. I think he was a tailgunner on a B-29, but that is strictly from memory. My mother (Allen's sister} died in January, 2000. She would have been so proud to know what is going on with the Korean War Project. She always felt that the servicemen from the Korean War did not receive the thanks or respect that they deserved. INFORMATION NEEDED |
| DENNIS W. MUMMERY wrote on May 7, 2000 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: - Comments: I am a Crew Chief with the first and only Air Force Reserve B52 bombers unit. We were reactivated about 7 yrs ago, the unit designation is the 93rb Bomb Sq. I would like to find any information concerning the unit during the Korean War, WW II if possible. I am looking for missions flown, unit awards, campaigns, patches and mostly nose art pictures. In today Air Force we are unable to put nose art on aircraft unless it is of heraldry or gender friendly, which means no ladies. The Air Force will consider it if we can show them historical nose art from past aircraft flying the 93rd colors in combat. I would greatly appreciate it if any one is able to help. On a different note would very much like to thank all f you who came before me, who fought for our freedom and the sacrifices you made for this country. Thank You! Keywords: |
