Comments: My Uncle was S/Sgt. Roscoe G. Becker, Scanner on board the RB-29, SN: 44-61810 shot down on 6-12-52 over the Sea of Japan. He was survived by his mother, Alice Becker, and his 2 brothers, Martin and Robert Becker. I am Martin's daughter. Both Martin and Robert are suffering with Alzheimer's Disease, but my dad has never given up hope of finding out more about his brother's fate. He idolized "Sonny", as Roscoe was called. Anyone who might have pictures of this crew or recollections of meeting with them, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you so I can pass them onto my dad while he can still understand.

He was a tail gunner on the B-29. Just looking to see if anyone knows of this and can fill me in on some details. I also have some wonderful photos that need some explaining as well. Thanks, Mike

Comments: Only 1 week before RB-29 #44-61815, 91st Strat Recon Sq, Yokota AB was shot down by Soviet fighters, I flew in the tail gun position in that aircraft for a photo mapping mission over southern Honshu. We carried neither guns nor ammo, and I'm assuming that it was unarmed as well on that fateful, last mission on 7 October, 1952 near the Kurile Islands. Even though I wasn't an air crewman (I was a 23- year-old T/Sgt on 6 months TDY from March Field, working in FEAF Bomber Command Hq), the crew treated me like I was a "regular." I'll always remember their hospitality and friendliness; it was especially gratifying for the pilot to periodically call me on the intercom to check how everything was in the tail-gun position. Sure a rotten shame that such great guys met such a miserable fate. Jerry S. Craft former T/Sgt

6091st Recon Squdn Yokota Tour Jacket - Bobby

Marla Good wrote on 2008-03-16 18:26:00.0

Comments: Hello all -

Thank you for serving, first and foremost.

Years ago, a friend gave a tour jacket to me. It's in navy blue velvet that reverses to pale gray satin. The front has "Bobby" embroidered on the left, Asian characters on the right. The back has embroidered "6091st RECON SQUDN" across the shoulders; an embroidered patch, diamond shaped with a winged devil being chased by a knight on horseback with 91 on the shield; then "YOKOTA AIR BASE" AND "JAPAN" underneath.

It's not in great shape. Well-worn. But it needs a new home - the right home. I could put it on eBay, but Googling brought me here. I'd like for it to go to the right person, perhaps a family member or someone who might have known this "Bobby" if someone can be found. If there's a museum I should contact, or if someone would like it for sentimental value - I'd prefer that before a collector wants it for collecting's sake - or for huge profits. Please contact me, if there's a good place for this jacket that anyone knows of. I'll send images and information. I want to do the right thing. But, I do need to make a decision soon. Thanks in anticipation of any response, and please excuse me if this is the wrong forum to do this.

Comments: I had the opportunity to fly on a photo-mapping mission over Hiroshima & Nagasaki a week prior to its fatal flight north of Hokkaido on 7 October '52. I worked in crypto at Bomber Command Hq. and was eager to fly in a B-29 (but not one that would fly into Harm's Way over Korea). I received permission to fly in the tail gun position on October 1; these aircraft would photo-map areas south of Yokota one week, then north of the base on alternate weeks. I saw neither guns nor ammo aboard #44-61815 on my flight, and I doubt that it was armed for its flight the following week. Its crew treated me like one of their own. I was greatly saddened when I learned of their deaths. Every one of them, both officers and non-coms, were most gracious hosts who shared their food and coffee. The 12 hours I spent with them was the highlight of my tour in Japan.

Comments: I am researching air combat in the Korean War, from US and "MiG" perspectives. Is anyone familiar with either of these RB-29's of the 31/91SRS.

42-93992 "Where Next?": assigned in the 31st in August 1950. When was it assigned out, and/or what was its final fate?, or any of its interesting missions.

44-61855: assigned to 31st prior to the Korean War, did it have a nickname? Did it encounter MiG's December 26th 1950? or does anyone know the aircraft involved in that incident, when the Soviets claimed an RB-29 shot down near the Soviet-NK border but none are known to have been lost.

The Korean War broke out in June 1950 and in August, all of our enlistments were involuntarily extended one year. In Dec. '49, one-hundred of us shipped out to West Drayton RAF Station, outside London, England. We went for thirty days TDY and then we stayed for a year...rumor had it that we were processing film and analysing radar blips from the U2 flights over Poland. Would love to hear from any buddies. He was one of few tailgunners in the RB-45C's facing migs in the Korean War. He received the Air Medal for shooting down a mig during a recon mission. His nickname was "Suicide John" and I am looking for anyone with information or pictures that might have known him.

Also Radar ECM missions against sub pens and coastal defences around Vladivostok. Lost a buddy when the ruskies shot down one of our aircraft over Hokkaido. Others on the crew bailed out sucessfully, were picked up by Russian Navy and held for five days. Similiar story to our Navy Pueblo incident but kept very secret. Would be interested in any refrence material regarding the unit. Thanx, John Hampton, USAF 1952-59

B-45 or RB-45 Losses over Korea

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Gerald (Gerry) Asher wrote on 2001-12-06 20:25:33.0

Comments: I am an aviation artist whose curent project involves the B/RB-45; I am working up a painting which will be featured as a scale model "box art" for a forthcoming kit. in the process of executing these projects, however, I strive to maintain a sense of histroical accuracy in my art. Hence, I am trying to track down more substantial info on B-45s lost with the 91 SRS in Korea. It is my understanding that. early in the war, three Tornadoes were baled from the 84th BS in the UK; two were subsequently lost to MiGs over the Korean penninsula. I do not know if the loans involved only airframes, or if the crews were TDY as well. At any rate, ANY additonal info you can provide about B-45 or RB-45 losses during the war would be deeply appreciated. Photos - markings descriptions - mission reports - Missing Air Crew Reports - ANYTHING - I'd be grateful. The finished artwork will most likely become part of the USAF Art Collection at the Pentagon.

Captain Roche was the only survivor picked up by US ships. Evidence from the US-Russia POW/MIA Task Force suggests that there were survivors picked up by Russian ships. Although, no definitive evidence from Russia. Comments: I am looking for any information any one has on SSGT Hirsch, who was shot down with, I believe, CAPT Dunham's crew on Oct. 7, 1952 in Russian territory off of Northern Hokkaido.

I am a retired AF TSGT who was stationed in Yokota from Nov 52-May 53. Looking for any one else I served with during that time.

Comments: I am building a web site that is a memorial to my RB-29 crew and all people who have participated in RB and B-29 operations in the Far East, since WW II. It is still under construction and the URL is a temporary location, under construction. If you have any interest in this, check it out and offer comments if you are moved to do so.

Comments: Dear Veterans, My name is Frederick J. Ferrer. I am an AIr Force veteran and Historian Emeritus for the 91st Squadron whose distinguished service has lasted from 1917 to present. The 91st was last re-activated as the 91st "Intelligence" Squadron assigned to the National Security Agency at Fort George Meade, Maryland. After retiring from active-duty in 1999, I have returned to school and currently pursuing a Ph.D. in History. I am still connected with the unit, am writing a 80+year comprehensive history of the unit and recently completed an article specifically on the 91st SRS's service during the Korean War. I am currently working with the new unit commander to pursue the re-awarding of the Korean Presidential Unit Citiation in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Korean War here in Washington DC. I would love to hear from you. You can reach me at this e-mail address [AFHonor@aol.com] or call me in the evenings at (410) 859-1791 or -3686. I look forward to adding "your" story to the unit's long, distinguished history. V/R, F. Ferrer

Comments: Participated in Cold War reconnaissance activities with 91st SRS, Yokota Air Base from fall of 1953 to summer of 1954. My crew will have its first reunion in late June, 2000. My extensive collection of black & white and color photos of our crew at work have been turned over to USAF Museum, WPAFB, Ohio. Am considering opening a web site to illustrate RB-29 crewmembers at work on the ground and in the air, as well as illustrations of people and rural countryside in Japan during that time. Does anyone have any comments or encouragement regarding this effort?

91st Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron

On November 15, 1950, the 91st SRS absorbed the personnel and resources of the 31st Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron in Japan. Using RB-29, RB-45, and RB-50 aircraft, it performed target and bomb-damage assessment photo and visual reconnaissance for FEAF Bomber Command, flew other special photographic missions, and conducted electronic "ferret" reconnaissance to determine frequency, location, and other characteristics of enemy ground radar.

The squadron also performed shipping surveillance over the Sea of Japan near the Siberian coast and leaflet drops over North Korea. Beginning in late 1952, rotating aircrews of the Philippine-based 581st Air Resupply and Communications Wing augmented the 91st SRS in flying leaflet missions. Stations Johnson AB, Japan, November 15, 1950; Yokota AB, Japan, December 19, 1950-.
