B-45 or RB-45 Losses over Korea

Gerald (Gerry) Asher wrote on 2001-12-06 20:25:33.0

Comments: I am an aviation artist whose curent project involves the B/RB-45; I am working up a painting which will be featured as a scale model "box art" for a forthcoming kit. in the process of executing these projects, however, I strive to maintain a sense of histroical accuracy in my art. Hence, I am trying to track down more substantial info on B-45s lost with the 91 SRS in Korea. It is my understanding that. early in the war, three Tornadoes were baled from the 84th BS in the UK; two were subsequently lost to MiGs over the Korean penninsula. I do not know if the loans involved only airframes, or if the crews were TDY as well. At any rate, ANY additonal info you can provide about B-45 or RB-45 losses during the war would be deeply appreciated. Photos - markings descriptions - mission reports - Missing Air Crew Reports - ANYTHING - I'd be grateful. The finished artwork will most likely become part of the USAF Art Collection at the Pentagon.

Comments: My Uncle, A2C James E. Woods, along with seventeen crewmembers of an RB-50 recon mission out of Yokoto AB into Russia, was shot down by Russian MIGS on July 29, 1953. Captain Roche was the only survivor picked up by US ships. Evidence from the US-Russia POW/MIA Task Force suggests that there were survivors picked up by Russian ships. Although, no definitive evidence from Russia. I am interested in hearing from anyone who was at Yakoto AB during the time of the shootdown and who can provide me any information about my Uncle and the shootdown. This summer, I am participating in a memorial service for my Uncle in Buchannon, West Virginia. Thanks. Ken Winker. I can be reached at (850)222-4555 or at kenwinker@hotmail.com

91st Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron

On November 15, 1950, the 91st SRS absorbed the personnel and resources of the 31st Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron in Japan. Using RB-29, RB-45, and RB-50 aircraft, it performed target and bomb-damage assessment photo and visual reconnaissance for FEAF Bomber Command, flew other special photographic missions, and conducted electronic "ferret" reconnaissance to determine frequency, location, and other characteristics of enemy ground radar.

The squadron also performed shipping surveillance over the Sea of Japan near the Siberian coast and leaflet drops over North Korea. Beginning in late 1952, rotating aircrews of the Philippine-based 581st Air Resupply and Communications Wing augmented the 91st SRS in flying leaflet missions. Stations Johnson AB, Japan, November 15, 1950; Yokota AB, Japan, December 19, 1950-.
