Comments: My Dad was Master Sergeant Lester Standridge. My Mother was Lois Standridge, an elementary school teacher on Ashiya AFB. We were at Ashiya 1958-1960. I was in 5th & 6th grade. This was the most magical time of my life. I'm looking for photo's of Donut Island and places on Ashiya AFB (e.g. Chapel, theater, hobby shop, flightline snackbar, schools, baseball fields, Areas A,B,and C off-base housing and machi. We lived next door (on base) to Col. Demick.

Comments: In 1958 the 483rd TCW won the Flying Saftey award at Ashia, & at that time I was the chief loadmaster for the 815th. TCS.. I had a great crew of loadmasters which included Ray Howe, Joe Pedilla, Lynn Parsons,Jim Humphries, (?) Upchurch, & others, not a lemmon in the bunch. Our 1st.Sgt. was MSgt. LeMiues,I can't remember the name of the squadron commander. We had C130c-e models to my recllection. Landing on the beach a Shededo ?(Sp) Soust Korea was a real hoot, & the take off was scarey as were many in the jungles of South East Asia. Would like to hear from all who who remember me durring 1958-early 60 ! Best Regards to ALL !! Merry Christmas, & a Prosperous New Year !!

Comments: I was assigned to the 815th in Oct 1956 as a clerk. I worked in the orderly room, supply and squadron operations. Later, I cross trained as a loadmaster and flew on the c119s for several months. I left in Aug 1958 with an early out to go to college. I have forgotten most of the names of the people I served with. I do remember Katy who ran the laundry just outside the main gate, her sister Miyoko and her mother known to me as mama-san. I remember a "Bobbi" who ran the Romance bar in Ashiya. I ran into her in Tokyo in 1968 when I passed thru from Vietnam. She was married and living there at the time. I also remember a radio operator (can't remember his name), but he was a stockbroker in Dallas in 1978)

Comments: Our Boss was Major Barcly or Barkly. I lived in tent city. Some guys were named Cheatham, Orr, Rice. I was in radio repair near the tarmak and my chief was a Lt. from calif. I left there in June 1953. I was one of the designers of our insignia of the Jenny in a horseshoe wearing a straw hat and band with our red and white colors.

Keith Benoist wrote on 2005-02-04 08:50:06.0
Comments: My father, 1st Lieutenant Edwin Euguene Benoist, Jr., from Natchez, Mississippi, was a pilot at Ashiya, 1953-1956. He flew C-119s. I was born at Ashiya, July 16, 1955. My older brother, Paul, was also born at Ashiya, a year earlier. My mother was "Patsy" White Benoist, from Newkirk, Oklahoma. My father had trained, earlier, at Enid AFB, in Enid, Oklahoma.
Lt. Benoist went on to study law at the University of Mississippi, following his return CONUS, and went on to fulfill a career in Law Enforcement. Lt./Capt. Benoist later flew with the Mississippi National Guard, but allowed his commission expire around 1970. He died, rather suddenly, in 1988, after a brief illness with lymphoma.
I am a former United States Marine, Airborne. During my service I met one other Marine who had "jumped" C-119s during the Korean Conflict. I am interested to know what became of Lt. Benoist's plane. I would also like to "experience" the C-119, by flying in one. I know that several are/were still in service with the U.S. Forestry Service as late as the Mid-eighties. They flew, and perhaps still fly, fire retardant missions in the western states. I have photos of some of these planes which I would be happy to forward or post to this site. Although I have not seen the film, I was very proud and inspired to see the C-119 cast in the recent remake of "The Flight Of The Phoenix".
If anyone is interested in helping find out more about my father's plane and crew, I would graciously entertain your correspondance.
Sincerely,
Keith E. Benoist
