Tony Ricardo wrote on 2009-06-06 15:59:39.0
Comments: Came across the site and saw a request for the squadron logo. Dad (Rick Ricardo) was radio operator on C-124's in 1956-57, who also did some cartoons of the base activities. I have a copy of the cover with what I believe is the logo...-snorting bull (head) over a weight/ block, on a blue circle. Dad went on to a career in air traffic control and is still with us -and would probably like to hear from anyone who was stationed there at that time.

Comments: I'm a Veterans Service Representative helping a veteran who was aboard the C-124 that crashed into the Han River in 1957, but the veteran doesn't remember what month it happened - only that it was winter. I was hoping someone could tell me the month it happened and any names of those who were killed. Thanks for sharing your info and any help you can give... it's a great site.

Correction re C124 crash in Korea |
 |
 |
Steve Kovach wrote on 2006-01-11 09:48:07.0
Comments: Correction to my previous entry. It was the Han River, not the Yalu! The plane was ditched into the river because the river was illuminated by the moonlight and was the safest reachable place. The plane split open forward of the tail section and was the escape route for most of the passengers. In a newspaper interview, Capt Moon said he was thrown onto an ice floe in his seat, unbuckled his safety belt and pulled suvivors onto the ice floe. Not quite. His seat was still in the plane. Strange things happen.I think the FLT ENG was M/SGT White.

Comments: I was in the 22nd TCS at Tachi '56 to '57. The tail number was 1040 and was a 22nd TCS aircraft. Capt. Moon was the pilot and the copilot was the 22nd's asst maint officer. He was relieved from the right seat by the 22nd's operations officer when the prop came through the side. The ops major died in the crash while the asst maint officer survived in the reserve crew seat which the ops major had vacated.Captain Moon also survived. The flight engineer was killed. I saw the engine after it was returned to Tachi. The prop shaft looked as though it was cut by a diamond saw. Not a burr on it. The 22nd's Japanese mechanics had spent a lot of time clearing a "smoker" on that engine the night before that flight.

Comments: My Dad, Ray Thomas, was in the 6th, probably in 1950 and before. He saved most of his military records (post WWII) and I saw one entry on a DD214 listing this unit. My Mother mentioned him flying in C-54s. He was reluctant to talk about his military career but he said the one time he thought he was going the have to use a parachute was when they were low on fuel and still over water. He was awarded a Korean Service Medal so I believe he spent time over Korea.
I'm glad to find out there are people from this unit getting reacquainted. The Internet is great.

Comments: Was station at Tachikawa from 1954 to 1957 and was assigned to the 6th Troop Carrier (Bully Beef)....Was an airborne radio operator. Later assigned to MATS at Donaldson AFB, South Carolina and flew on operation Deep Freeze with Major Cartwright who was also station at Tachikawa. He was the pilot (Aircraft Commander) who took off from K-14 with about 150 troops on board when on takeoff a prop went through the aircraft, cutting the control cables and yet he managed to set the plane down in the middle of the Yalu river, in the middle of the night, during winter. I think there were only about 20 deceased. If anyone knows anything about Major Cartwright, I would greatly appreciate it if you would send me email. CBessett@email.msn.com.........Thank You
