Comments: I joined the 67th from the 40th FIS when it returned to Japan in May, 1951. Shortly after joining the 67th, I was assigned to replace the fuel pump in the left wing of a 51; this meant removing the stress plate, removing the old fuel pump, draining fuel from the fuel cell, installing the new one, reconnecting the ground wire, testing the pump, and reinstalling the stress plate. When we got ready to test the fuel pump, I was in the cockpit to turn on the battery to turn on the fuel pump, and my partner was underneath the left wing to see if the pump ran properly. When I turned on the battery flipped the fuel cell on, it didn't run, and I yelled out to wait to touch the ground to the metal, but my partner touched it to the metal before I got the battery turned off. The spark set off the fuel vapor in the air which touched off the fuel-soaked ground. I was jumped out on the wing an ran out to the end and jumped off to the ground. I ran back and helped others drag my paartner out of the fire. I never found out how badly he was burned or if he survived. I believe the man was a S/SGT, but am not sure. Can anybody remember what month that was in 1951 and the name of the guy who got burned? I would like to know his name and when it happened. my name is Bill Hamilton, tel. 503-982-5405, email is williamhamilton_1@msn.com

Comments: On May 5th 1954 another friend and I pulled a F86 pilot from the wreckage of his burning plane. The plane was taking off from the air strip at K-55. He was a member of the "Fighting Cocks" squaderon. We pulled him from a water filled rice patty and carried him some one hundred and fifty yards to our jeep. He was then transpodted to the base hospitol. That was the last I ever saw of him.I never got his name or where he was from in the states. Can anyone help me locate him or his family?

Comments: Readers might be interested to know that two new web sites include a great deal of information about the 18FBW/67thFBS/12thFBS/39thFIS during their valiant defense of Freedom in Korea. www.truckbustersfromdogpatch.com www.baitedtrapambush.com In addition to history and numerous never-before-published photograhs about the 18th and the 3ARS, the sites are adding a new Air-Combat Glossary, photo gallery and videos of air combat in Korea flown by the 18th. Videos will also show life at K-46 and ground crew maintenance, rearming and refueling the Wing's Mustangs. A list of over 3,500 Veterans of the 18th during the Korean War is being prepared and will be posted in the very near future. Names of additional Veterans can be added by relatives.

Comments: I was in the 67th FBS at Wonju (K46) from December 1951 until November 1952 after being moved from K-10 Chinhae. Served in the 67th under Lt. Colonel Crowe and Lt. Colonel Long and was assigned to the orderly room. I was a pilot but too young (18) to fly in the Air Force. I did however, continue to fly many years as a civilian. Most recently, I have been in contact with Retired Navy Captain Tracy D. Connors who authored and dedicated a book to his uncle lst Lt. Archie Connors, Jr. who was one of our 67th pilots who was KIA. You might be interested in obtaining a copy of TRUCKBUSTERS FROM DOGPATCH. It is a comprehensive combat diary of the 18th FBW in the Korean War, 1950 - 1953. In fact, page 405 of the book is written about yours truly with photos. If any of you have not heard of TRUCKBUSTERS FROM DOGPATCH, I have Captain Connors e-mail address on my address book.

I am building a Mustang to honor Major Sebille and all the men who gave their all in the Korean War. Unit markings and tail number is critical. I have been searching for several weeks now, including Modeler's forums and Aviation magazines, but up to now, no positive results. Thank you for your time and any help you can extend.

My experience there was quite an education.I remember when we went down to Taegu,I'll never forget,I was sitting at the end of the runway waitng for some of our birds to arrive when one of our 86's came sliding in an burst into flames.I remember a Captain an I believe his name was Cavanaugh went rushing to the aircraft an we had to restrain him beacuse the 50 cals started going off.It was a terrible sight to see.We were a very close knit family enlisted an officers. At that age I never could have experienced anything like that tour with the 67thFBS.

Comments: I am writing the autobiography of Air Vice Marshal John Howe who before he joined the Royal Air Force flew with 2 Squadron of the South African Air Force as part of the 18th FBW in Korea. Whilst with them he befriended Ed Rackham who was with the 67th FBS. This was in 1951. Ten years later Ed was OC the 79th TFS based at RAF Woodbridge in England and John Howe was OC 74 Squadron RAF. Both squadrons were Tiger Squadrons and the two got together at Woodbridge for the first of what turned out to be an enduring tradition of Tiger Meets which are still held today.

I am trying to trace Ed Rackham as part of my researches and also to put he and John back in touch with each other again. If anyone can help as regards Ed`s whereabouts I would be very pleased to hear from them.

LOOKING FOR INFO ABOUT MY DAD - CAPTAIN DEAN EMMETT SINGLETON

Michael NAEGLE (SINGLETON) wrote on 2005-06-02 00:00:00.0

Comments: I am looking for any and all information on my Dad, Dean Singleton. I never got to know him but I'm told he did everything he could to be a great Dad but my Mom and Grandmother wouldn't let him see me. I'm trying to write his story but have very little information on him. I have the basics; birth date, military service numbers, units etc. I also have 2 pictures of him but that is about it.

I have exhausted the folks at the military personnel center at St. Louis. As it turns out, my Dad's military records were destroyed in the fire in 1973 but they were able to find the Air Force Casualty Report. This is what I have from the report. He was a Captain in the 67th Fighter Bomber Squadron in the 18th Fighter Bomber Group. He was a pilot. He was killed in an aircraft crash near Itazuki, Air Base, Japan on January 9th, 1955. My Aunt tells me he was doing some sort of precision flying and he and his wingman both went down. He was from Ogden, Utah.

I would love any information such as what type of aircraft he flew, what awards he may have had, who his buddies were and most of all any pictures.

Thank you very much

Mike

He was at Clark Field, Manila, prior to Korea. He also went ashore at Inchon with an AF detachment. His memory is not what it used to be, so some of the details are hazy. I have several pictures of him, one with a line of F-51s in the background, one of the sign at the base's main gate ("18th Fighter Bomber, Best Damn Fighter Group in the World".) I would like to know if any of his buddies from the 67th are still around, and remember him.

He now lives in Lakeland, Florida with his wife (my mother) and enjoys flying his model airplanes as he did back in Korea.

He flew on the USAF Model airplane conpetition team with Lenny Smelter.

If anyone is interested in the slides I can convert them to digital and provide them.

Comments: The April 1952 historical report for the 67th includes the following information that may of some help or interest in your search for information on 1st Lt. Sankey… 1st Lt. William C. Sankey, Jr., 20806A, was listed as “wounded in action when forced to abandon his aircraft while on a rescue mission on 17 April 1952.” A further entry notes that the WIA was changed to MIA on April 27th. Colonel Seymour M. Levenson, USAF, was Commander of the 18th Fighter Bomber Group at that time. Major Stanley A. Long, USAF, was the brand new Commander of the 67th FBS having just succeeded LTC Julian F. Crow, USAF, who had completed 101 missions. 1st Lt. Cleyburn L. McCauley, 20276A, first appears in the May 1952 report as having completed 14 missions that month. Another note: 1st Lt. Cleyburn L. McCauley successfully bailed out after his plane received major damage from ground fire on May 22nd. His name does not appear in the June or July 1952 reports.

Comments: Responding to a recent posting requesting additional information on Captain Elliott D. Ayer, MIA in July, 1952.

Excerpts from the squadron history for the 67th FBS dated 7 August 1952 indicates that the squadron was located at K-46 Air Base, South Korea, approximately 7 mi. north North East of Wonju--127 degrees 57 minutes 30 seconds longitude west, 38 degrees 26 minutes 30 seconds North. The unit utilizes the K-46 air strip as a forward combat operations base located approximately 5 mi. southeast of Hoensong, Korea.

The stated mission of the 67th fighter bomber squadron is close support of United Nations forces in Korea and/or other aerial combat missions as directed by higher headquarters. During the period covered by this report, the primary mission has been the tactical interdiction of the enemy's transportation system.

The 67th fighter bomber squadron, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Stanley A. Long of Marquette, Mich., is a unit of the 18th fighter bomber group which is commanded by Colonel Sheldon Brinson.

Total officer strength at the beginning of July 19th 1952 was 44. Officer gains numbered 6, and losses five, leaving a total of 45 officers assigned at the end of July. The total enlisted strength at the beginning of July was 177.

The total number of sorties flown during 1952 was 419. The personal participating are as follows: Captain Ayers, Fay E. 12 1st Lt. Baldwin, Rexford R. 15 1st Lt. Baldwin, Rexford R. 15 1st Lt. Baldwin, Rexford R. 15 1st Lt. Bunn, Russell 15 1st Lt. Camp, James E. 7 1st Lt. Carothers, Earle 22 1st Lt. Corley, John 20 Captain Davis, Roy 10 Captain Dean, Julian 21 1st Lt. Flagg, Earle 8 Captain Flowers, Arthur 15 1st Lt. Forbert, Sam 7 Major Forts, Robert 9 Lt. Col. Freund, Albert 1 1st Lt. Gossett, C.J. 18 1st Lt. Gray, David 9 1st Lt. Henna, Theodore 14 1st Lt. Hill, John 20 1st Lt. Holmes, Verne 16 Captain Jarvis, Rowan 1 Major Lenhart, Warren 9 Lt. Col. Long, Stanley 13 1st Lt. Lovelace, Albert 7 1st Lt. McShane, William 20 Colonel Maxwell, Allison 15 Captain Mills, Warren 16 1st Lt. Moorshfelder, Herbert 12 1st Lt. Reinhardt, Lewis 15 Captain Sargen, Charles 16 1st Lt. Spinnenweber, Joseph 5 2nd Lt. Urquhart, William 19 Captain Volts, Edmund 10 Major Waggoner, Horace 9 Captain Wilcox, Floyd 12 1st Lt. Williams, Joseph 10 1st Lt. Yingling, John 1

Casualties: Captain Elliott D. Ayer, AO 758 753 was listed as missing in action on 25 July 1952.

Claims: Destroyed Artillery Positions 13 Rail bridges 2 Rail cuts 10 Road bridges 2 Box cars 4 Bunkers 56 Mortars 25 Gun positions 2 Machine guns 7 Secondary explosions 15 Self-propelled gun 1 Supply shelters 4 Caves 2 Buildings 39 Village 1 Factories 1 Trucks 3 Transformer yard 1 (damaged) Ox cart 1 (damaged) Trench 720' KIA 9

Losses to personal and aircraft: Other than the above mentioned MIA on Captain Ayer, there were no other losses to the squadron this month.

Training: the trainee program was considerably more pronounced this month due to more than usual poor weather days which allowed the squadron the opportunity to stress navigational and instrument flights.

Armament: During the month of July there have been considerable rocket malfunctions due to bad plugs and bad motors. July's gun malfunctions have dropped to 12,480 rounds per malfunction as compared with June's rate of 10,000 rounds per malfunction.

Due to daily flying reports being filled out both at K-46 and K-10, an accurate total of flying time is impossible at this writing. The approximate total was 839 hours and fifty minutes.

Morale: In the airmen, there was no obvious change in the morale from last month produced. Extreme heat has played an important factor in the discomfort of the troops. The service club was closed for a while due to necessary billeting of the men there while repairs were being made to their private quarters which suffered damage during heavy rains of this month.

Pilot morale also remained about the same although, Capt. Elliott D. Ayre completed the 45,000th sortie for the 18th Fighter Bomber Wing, thereby setting the record for the most sorties to be flown by a combat outfit in Korea. Also, our Commanding Officer was given a promotion from Major to Lieutenant Colonel, this had a definite lift to the morale of the Squadron as a whole.

Conclusion: The 67th Fighter Bomber Squadron was able to complete it's [sic] mission and accomplish it's [sic] assigned duties because of it's [sic] high morale and Superior leadership.

The "Historical Report for July 1952" for the 67th FBS was classified Secret until declassified on 13 December 1973.

We are interested in the circumstances of the action in which he lost his life...or his (reported) subsequent POW status. In advance, many thanks for your help in this matter.

We have added several new pages to our family web site to honor my uncle...1st Lt. Archie Connors, Jr., USAF of the 67th FBS who was KIAed on 24 June 52.

Several newspaper articles are included that outline what was known about his death at the time. We are very much interested in finding out as much as we can about his service and the circumstances of his death...and reported sightings in several POW camps.

Thanks a lot for the info. I never knew what had happened
after he was shot down. We tried to recover but were
unsuccessful.

He was with the 18th Fighter Bomber Wing but I don't
remember the squadron. I keep thinking of the 67th,but
not sure.

He flew F-51's out of K-46 near Wonju.

Thanks for the info

Update: courtesy Col. Bud Biteman;

Don,
Picked up on your request for info concerning George Vernon
Patton. I have him in my deceased listing as 1/Lt AO2222013,
Washington DC, Killed In Action, Korea, 13 June '52.

My reference was the book: "In Memory - Lest We Forget", and
from separate research by author David R. McLaren.

He was in the 67th Fighter-Bomber Sqdn at the time.

Dear Col. Biteman,

I work with Hal & Ted on the Korean War Project, and attended the DPMO
Family Update in San Diego in January where I met Kagan West. She is
trying to find men who were in her Dad's unit. Her father, USAF, MIA,
shot down July 9, 1951 a few months before she was born.

Capt. Babasa was with the 67th F/B Squadron of 18th F/B Group. She is
trying to locate:

Cp. Sidney Arnold,
Maj. William J. Green,
Cp. Wm. H. Strand,
Cp. Kenneth Stewart. She has found these names in documents at her
mother's home and believe they served with her Dad.

She can be reached at at 586 Vinyard, San Marcos, CA 92069 Phone (760)

If you could provide help, she would certainly appreciate it.
