Comments: My Dad was a Dollar Nineteen Pilot, flying out of Ashyia, Japan into Korea.. April-August 1953. Captain Jake S. Bishop Jr. (USAF RET-DEC). Anyone recalling My Dad, or, better yet, who flew with my Dad, I would greatly love to hear from you. As a kid, I asked, like many other kids, "What did you do in the war?" The only answer I got was "I'll tell you some day." Unfortunately, Dad died two days after his 50th birthday, eight years and nine months after retiring O-4 from twenty years in the USAAF & USAF. Any iformation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Charles.

Did anyone serve with my father, John Gilbert? |

Comments: Well, its been several years and not one person has come forward to me and told me that they knew my father, 2nd Lt. John M. Gilbert. Considering how few planes were shot down (albiet by friendly fire) I find it amazing that there is no reference to it anywhere on this site other than in the stats. I mean, how common was it for planes to be lost to artillery fire? Not very, I'm sure. Anyway, if anyone served with my father I would love to hear from you. I know how difficult it must seem. Trust me, we aren't getting any younger and I need something to tell my kids. They are 23 years old and 17, I'm 56. Times running out. As noted previously, my mother committed suicide at a young age, our house burned down and I did not even have a picture of my father until I was 18 years old. I have absolutely not one comment from any of his buddies. I know one person flew into Iraan Texas when I was about three. I can remember that. Anyway, I would sure like to hear from anyone who knew him.

Comments: Hello - I am looking for information on my Grandfather. He once told me he was on Johnson Island during the Korean War. He was a crew member on a B-? (possibly B-19). The only thing else I remember him telling me of the time is that they had a little dog on the island. I also know that his nickname on some of his gear was "Pappy. His name is Charles (Charlie) Edman. Any info would be of great interest! Thanks.

Comments: Left Smyrna,TN in August 1950,with the first group of C-119s, to California, Hawaii, Johnson Island, Kwaj, Midway. and Nagoya Japan. Later the unit moved to Ashiya. The group had very little use for radar, so in November I was sent to Pyong Yang, Korea, to supervise loading and unloading aircraft. Later, became a PBX operator for the Base. Left Japan in September 1951 on a Hardship Discharge

Comments: Our Troop Carrier Sqdn. of C-54's and crews were placed under MATS assignments during the Korean War. Our mission was to fly combat troops from Ft. Lewis,Washington to Korea via the Northern route of Alaska, Shemya, and into Tokyo. The flight crews were switched at Anchorage and Shemya, for rest stops and and then continued after 12 hours on the next aircraft to Tokyo. The combat troops continued on with the original aircraft for the entire long flight. After off-loading the troops at Tokyo, we then flew empty to the Marine base in Southern Japan, the nearest airfield in Japan to Pusan, Korea and coverted the aircraft to AirEvac, with 26 stretchers on board and returned wounded to the nearest hospital, either Guam or Hawaii. This was during the period our combat troops were doing all they could to prevent losing Pusan to the commuist. Many times we transported critically wounded that we recognized as the fresh troops we had brought over only a few weeks earlier. From Hawaii we flew to San Francisco and Back to McChord. Then prepared to do it all over again. It was a human/flying-machine/conveyer belt, that you could stack up far more than 100 flying hours a month. We flight crews had some long and trying missions, but in no way did it compare to the suffering the brave ground/combat troops received, with their unbelievable wounds and casualities to save Pusan and its surrounding areas. We were proud to be associated with those Hero's!

Comments: My 18 months in Ashiya were without a doubt the low point in my career. The C-119 A/C was a nightmare for those of us who had never been near one of these monsters. We worked our tails off and hoarded A/C spares. The condition of the A/C was a crime, the leadership left much to be desired, from the Wing CO on down. The softball team came before A/c maintenance and operational requirements. In any event my "Hats OFF" to all those hard working guys that I was associated with

My father, 1Lt. John M. Gilbert was killed in June of 1951 while
flying supply missions over Korea. He was a co-pilot in a C-119. It
is my understanding that a group of three planes delivering supplies
were struck by allied ground artillery fire and all three planes were
destroyed. However, I have never been able to verify this story,
although it seems to probably be true.
If anyone out there recalls this incident, please contact me at the
above address. It just seems time is running out and I would like to
know. I have a letter from his commander to his mother but it just
talks about what a great guy he was and about how much all the men liked
him. My father played the harmonica and sang and was very popular.
I've a letter from another pilot who flew over the site just minutes
afterwards but he never specifically states what happened. He mostly
talks about what a shock it was. Altogether it was a blow that was felt
for many years and indeed, still is felt by me today. In looking
through my fathers letters and personnal effects one gets a strong sense
of the hard work and dedication the cargo pilots were possessed with.
That they were brave men, there is no doubt. It seems ironic that so
many that gave so much will never be remembered in the way they should
be.
At Castle Air Force Museum sits a C 119 ready for restoration. What a
fitting tribute it would be to have those Korean pilots tell their tale
in a memorial inside that plane.
