Comments: Hello, My name is Michael Rodgers. My father is the singer who became popular in the late 1950's "Jimmie Rodgers". My dad served in Korea with the 6127 at the K16 airbase. He worked in the Air Terminal. I have been reading the first draft of my fathers life story this week and he mentions quite a few people (see keywords) and experiences that he had while serving there. One such experience was in August of 1954 when a group of North Koreans crossed the flight line and "hit" the chow hall killing a number of Air Force personel. I was wondering does anyone remember that incident? Does anyone remember my father being there and have any stories of him that you could share. Dad ended up winning a base talent contest and getting placed in Special Services and touring airbases with a show. He ended up in Nasville TN and began a recording career in 1957 with a song called "Honeycomb". I would love to learn more about his experinces there and his friends mentioned in the "keywords". Thanks so much and God Bless. Michael Rodgers

Designer of Minuteman Emblem

Jerilyn Nikiel wrote on 2007-05-16 15:17:42.0

Comments: I recently found an article documenting the origin of the 6127th ATG's emblem. My Dad, Frank J. Schelling, was a 1st Lieutenant at the time he designed the emblem. He had flown many B-29 missions in WWII from Tinian in the Marianna Islands, and then was reactivated during the Korean War. I would post the photo of the emblem if it were possible.

Here's the text of the article:

The 6127th ATGp., an organization with a myriad jobs, has conceived a unit emblem which sizes up all of them in one picture. The emblem, shown in the picture above, was designed and drawn by 1st Lt. Frank J. Schelling, statistical services officer for the group.

They believe this emblem to be symbolic of the nature of their mission and portrayal of the group. It conveys a thought appropriate to the history and operation of the organization. From its origin until the present time the 6127th has displayed characteristics closely allied to those of the "minuteman". In the beginning it was unorganized and untrained and was manned by personnel from all parts of the theater. As time when on it gained knowledge through application, willingness, and hard work, making the best of available equipment. Many times they carried out the mission under adverse weather conditions. It was a case of starting from scratch and building a successful organization. 6127th detachments are now serving, as did many teams of minutemen serve in different parts of the country, under the command of one Headquarters. Their pledge is the same as that of the minutemen: "We are ready to take to the field at a minute's notice." These and many other similarities serve to justify the minuteman as being especially suitable for the trade mark. The letters alpha and omega, the first and last of the Greek alphabet, denote that the men of the 6127th are at the beginning and the end of the movement of all cargo, mail, and passengers. The chain represents the group operation: it forms strong links in the function of Combat Cargo movements. The chain also depicts thye unity of their many scattered detachments and liaison sections.

Remember the folowing...The Black Knights of Korea was stationed at this base. One story I remember is that an NCO on the base built a model B-29 and attempted to fly it on the runway by remote. It seemed to take off well, but as great as it went up, it came down even greater, demolishing the plane on contact. Hopefully someone else may remember this story too.

It has the inscription "6127th Air Terminal Group" on one side and the inscription "Minutemen" with an emblem with the Alpha and Omega sign, a minuteman, a chain link and the words "Aggressive Service" on it. I (his son's wife) never knew him and am curious to see if anyone knew him or to hear more about the 6127th. My husband seems to think that his father would have been there in the 50's.

He was a passagener on a truck which was crossing a bridge when the flooring gave way, causing the vehicle to plunge into a deep ravine. If their is anyone out their who knew my brother please e-mail me at JLH9616@aol.com. He was good friends with a guy name Joe, that is all I know. I have a couple of pictures of fred with a couple of guys and Joe. Just wanted to talk with someone, anyone who knew my brother. thanks and God Bless for all the guys that made it back.

Comments: I was at Itami Air Base from May 1952 to May 1953. I was then reassigned to the 801st Medical Air Evac Squadron at Tachikawa AFB. While assigned to the 801st I was assigned to the following locations: K-2 Tague, K-16 Seoul, and K-55 Osan. I am interested in making contact with former members of the 6127th and 801st.

Looking for the following members: Wenzel Frank MINN, Robert Briles IND, Robert Rydell NEB, James Boyle WA, James Wyche FLA, Sheldon Gornstein RI, Robert Burke WY, Dan Copenski NJ, Elmer Wright NY, Robert Karr NY. The above were stationed at Itami Air Base during 1952, 53, and 54.

Itami had a great Airmen's NCO Club. The town outside the main gate was an exciting experience. Remember in particular the following clubs/bars: The New Yorker,Chicago, Pacific, Coconut, Ginza, Bolero, Blackout, Cherry, Harem, and Four Aces.

This was a great assignment. I remember in particular the NCO Club with both American and Japanese entertainment. Great club with slot machines and restaurant. Steak dinner $1.00. The town outside the base was called several different names: The Hill, The Strip and Hot Rocks were the more popular. I remember some of the club names. The Harem, The Itami, The New Yorker. The Stork Club, The Bolero, The Pacific, The Coconut, The Ginza and The Cherry to name a few.
