Comments: I was station at Kelly AFB, Texas with the GEEIA squadron. We went to PY-DO on a TDY assignment in 1966 and installed a new RADAR station. I never knew that there was a RADAR site on the island before the one we installed. The landing strip was the beach. We had to wait for the tide to go out before we could leave the mainland other wise there wasnt a place on the island to land the C-47. I was there through the winter and it WAS cold and there was a lot of snow. I left the GEEIA squadron for my next assignment at a really remote site at Fort Yukon, Alaska. That was cold.

Comments: I was stationed with the 608th A.C.& W. Sqdn, from March of 1956 to March of 1957. The post was a small compound a couple of miles outside of Kimpo AFB.. I served as Sgt. of the Guard and we maintained security on the compound and the mountain. I recall several friends. Names were Jim Hunter from California, Sgt. Pete Olesko, Stan Bem from Pa.,& house boy 'Hunesan'. Coldest winter in 31 years according to the 'Stars & Stripes' newspaper. I recall the hairy ride up the mountain in my 3/4 ton weapons carrier. The rain unearthed a corpse of a Chinese soldier while standing watch one night..'Burp gun' and all. Would like to hear from anyone that served during that time period. I was from Maine at the time. Thanks

Comments: Went to Korea on the USS Gen J C Breckenridge in November of 1954 and was stationed with the 608th as a personnel specialist. We were in Seoul at that time. Then in January 1955, headquarters moved to Kimpo Air Base (K-14) on the back side of the base. Later that year we moved again to our own compound just outside of Kimpo. I remember flying out to the Island (K-53) once a month to pay the indigenous personnel and twice a year to do a records review for those stationed there. Rotated back to the US in November 1955. I remember Betty in the chow hall. Would love hearing from anyone stationed there during my time.

Comments: The "new" name for Paengnyong-do (Det 3) is now Baengnyeong-do. Kangnung (Det 4) has also had a name change. It is now Gangneung. Cho-do (Det 2) and Yanggu (Det 1) have not changed. Of course Cho-do now belongs to NK. Ed O'Neill is right about the Natl Geo map, it's quite good. It seems that K-16 Seoul is no longer a major airport. K-14 Kimpo (now Gimpo) is the major airport for that area. Does anyone out there know the GEOREF coordinates or Latitude and Longitude coordinates for Det 4? I know where the airbase is, but need the coordinates for the radar hill. There's a lot of mountains around there and I'm trying to find the radar site.

Was assigned to Otis AFB on Cape Cod, Massachusetts for the rest of my enlistment. For anyone looking for PY-Do on a map, its name has been changed to a word that starts with "B", but I don't have the name handy. The June issue of National Geographic had an insert that was a map of all Korea that will knock you socks off. You can get it from the magazine for $15.00.

CECIL W. Davidson wrote on 2004-05-01 17:28:15.0
Comments: May 1 also known as "May Day" each year brings back old memories to me. Exactly 52 years ago today in the evening I thought my end was near. I was assigned to work with a small group of US Army & Republic of Korea (ROK) Engineers in repairing a mountain road several miles south of the 38th Parallel on the East coast of Korea. We had a communications site on the top of the mountain. I was an 18 year old S/Sgt. driving a large dump truck. We lived in tents a few miles from the mountain top and normally got paid the 1st of each month if we were at our base compound; however, since we were living & working on the mountain we would not get paid until a day or so later when the Payroll Officer made his trip up the mountain. Since I was eager to get paid I claimed that I needed to take my truck back to our downhill facilities for maintenance after work that day. The trip would take about 2-3 hours and it was approaching darkness by the time I departed. Since it was "May Day" we had been warned to be alert for potential communist guerilla activity.
Shortly after I started my trip I began thinking what I would do if I came upon a roadblock. Most of the road was only wide enough for one vehicle and was in very poor condition with many blind curves and steep drop-offs. All along the road were numerous armed ROK soldiers that were hitch hiking. Shortly after starting my trip I picked up an armed ROK soldier which made me feel better since I felt that he could help me if we were ambushed. Unfortunately, he only wanted a relatively short ride and I was again alone and the daylight was getting low. In my mind I had a mental image of being ambushed by going around a blind curve and finding a pile of boulders blocking the way. A few miles after dropping off the ROK soldier I rounded a blind curve and there in the middle of the road was exactly what I was afraid of, a huge boulder that was blocking the path. I threw on the brakes and barely stopped before crashing. I removed my rifle from its rack, placed it next to me and slowly inched my way around the rock all the time expecting to be fired on. Apparently, the boulder just tumbled onto the roadway as I was not shot. After getting around the boulder I began driving as fast as I could (actually much too fast considering the road conditions) until I arrived at our compound near Kangnung, Korea.
After arriving at our base compound I got paid. That night while I was asleep with my loaded rifle and fatigues laying next to me someone took my wallet out of my fatigues, stole $136.00 and replaced the wallet. The above is why May 1st is a day that I will always remember.
I would like to hear from others that were in the 608th, especially in the first 6 months of 1952.

Names like Bob Taylor, John Leute and Dick Hertzig also ring a bell. I have a photo of Bob Taylor in the process of burying some “fresh” green onions that his wife sent him. By the time they arrived from the states they were rotten and needed a decent burial. Would enjoy swaping stories and possibly picts from that experience. Can't believe it's been 50 years ago this year.

Comments: My name is Thomas Hong who was a Korean orphan and worked for cooks unit as a houseboy at the 608th ACWS 502nd TC in Paengnyong-Do and also later worked in the mess hall as kitchen helper from 1953 to 1956.
I was 12 years old a dirty and hungry little orphan boy in 1953 until the cooks unit of ACWS 502nd TC gave me foods and clothes and kept me as their houseboy.
Because of their loving, helps and cares, I have survived myself and graduated from the university.
I left the island in 1956 for Seoul and I got a job from U.S. Embassy in Seoul and also severed 8th U.S. Army Headquarters as a KATUSA (Korean Army to U.S. Army) for 3 years.
Especially one cook, who is an Italian decendent, called Joe treated me as his little brother. His parent sent me clothes and books for the christmas present. He said he was a boxer and from North-Eastern States.
Currently I am living in Toronto, Canada as a Canadian citizen since 1975. Every Christmas is coming near, the memories of the Paengnyong-Do is awlays in my mind and wishing to see them again and want to thank them for their generosity.
If any one out there recognizes me as 'Mickey" the houseboy of the cooks unit, please contact me by e-mail or phone at 416-693-5538.
I sincerely look forward to hearing from anyone who remember me.

As I recall the island was about 100 miles WNW of Inchon, the 38th supposedly ran through it, and North Korea was a very close neighbor. Comments: K-53 boys check out the May issue of VFW magazine, pages 38-39. A brief article about the "Donkeys" that also mentions Paengnyong-do. First time I've ever seen anything other than in the book "Dark Moon". As I recall, they used to train in the school yard at the bottom of the hill (village of Chinchon-ni). Also remember watching the fire fights at night, when they used to raid the mainland from "donkey island" (Wollae-do) and the occasional body that would wash up on the beach.

Comments: First, my heartfelt thanks to all veterans who visit this site for your willingness to serve your country. And, second, I ask the help of those who served in Det. 2, 608th AC&W. I have come into possession of two patches from the estate of a man named Webber, a West Point grad, who apparently served in this unit. I would like to verify their authenticity and, if possible, date them. One is 6 1/2" and reads THE EYES AND FARS OF MIG ALLEY (and yes, it is actually an "f" instead of an "e") and pictures an F-86 Sabrejet held in an upraised hand. The second is 4 1/2" and reads TEAMWORK FOR FREEDOM in a gold circle with a poorly drawn radar antenna over a bald eagle with talons outstreached. I would appreciate any help I can get. Please e-mail me and I will forward photos for you to view. Thanks!

Comments: I was at the Rock K-53 in 1957, after the war was suppose to be over, I often wondered why I spent time in a foxhole around the radar site with a BAR, they forgot to tell the north the war was over.
It was an exciting year. A week after I arrived the orderly room burned, later the movie theatre burned, and then the dining hall was burned down by the mess Sgt. after he robbed the safe. A lot of other things happened. A drunk Air Policeman in a weapons carrier went through the roof of the officers club comming down radar hill one morning. One of the most exciting was the C-119 stuck in the ocean as the tide came in.They could have written a sequel to "Wake me when its over" about the Rock.A lot of thing made it a different year, but one consolation the war was over. The out house was hard to get use to, as were the "PY-DO cannons" (Pi-- Tubes). After using one on a sleepy hungover morning as Bob Hope and Jane Mansfield performed on the bed of a six by, the cannons were pulled up when VIPs showed up.
Loved those R&Rs, managed to extend mine to almost 30 days each, I had a friend at Tachicawa AB at the terminal, he kept stamping my orders, no aircraft available, it worked. Hope some of the guys get in touch with me, memories are fading, lets keep them a live. I have lots of pictures of the rock, lets get a K-53 web page, with pictures started. I will donate mine, they are already on Floppies, if anyone wants them, drope me an email.

Comments: Mr. Schuck Tried to email but it didn't go through, I'm doing a study of K-bases used during the Korean War and your reference to K-52 caught my attention. I have a short entry describing it only as a 6,000 ft gravel emergency runway, that I would like to expand on. If you know of any other units/incidents at this airfield I would be glad to hear your account of them. Also, if you have electronic versions of these pictures and don't mind emailing them to me this would be great. I could also look at the tail designation on the aircraft, if it wasn't destroyed, and tell you what ship or base the aircraft came off of. After a preliminary look I did not see any AD-1 aircraft units assigned to fly in the Korean War. The earliest AD model flown had been the AD-2. But hey, the only difference between AD-1s and AD-2s is 200hp, but if you can read in the picture any letters on the tail it would greatly help us toward finding the pilots name. Thanks for your time toward this matter. V/r SSgt John DeShetler USFK History Office The right job, at the right place, at the right time!

Comments: After 50 years of silence my dad is beginning to tell me his experiences in Korea. He has identified the 608th as his unit. (At least the first unit he was assigned to.) I really think he needs to unload all of this before he can die with an unburdened heart. I was just looking at the web trying to find some of the places he mentions and help him with maps and whatever else I can find.

Comments: To C. Davidson, Was browsing and found your email address and thought I'd write to you about ancient history. Small world, isn't it?
I finished RADAR school at Keesler in '52, sent to Lake Charles AFB, La. and from there was sent to K-18, Kangnung, Korea in '54. Yup, was up there on that hill but it was the 606th ACW detatchment. We had that old Philco MPS-7, it's MK-X IFF and that broken down old TPS-10Dog height finder that hardly ever worked. We came within a inch of kicking that damn thing down the hill but our RCA and Philco Tech Reps talked us out of it. I was in the repair section and we cursed that old pile of junk we had for radars.
After that I went to Barksdale, re-uped for Japan and ended up back at Itazuke AB where we all left from to head to "frozen chosen" but this time I got a cushy job with FEN. Stayed there through '59, then Kelly and out. While in Japan I bought property between Kasugabaru (K-Bar)and Zasshonokuma. Not much but enough to build the first house on a block that was totally paddy fields. Now there are high like downtown Tokyo. Been there ever since. rises all around and within the city limits of Fukuoka in Hakata Ku. I Built a house and an apartment bldg next door. I actually have my residence in there but am now working for Scenic Airlines in Las Vegas as a Japanese tour guide. What the hell, it's a living.
I can generally stand it here for about 3 or max 4 months and have to get back home to get my hear straightened out and have a deep, hot ofuro.
I might ask that you check your records and verify it was the 608th and not the 606th. My old orders show 606th but it might have changed before I got there. Our large round patch we all wore depicted an octopus with tools in all hands, with a rubber in one and a 3 level screwdriver in the other. Under it said"Fix It Or Fuck It". Wish I kept my jacket with that patch, it was a riot.
Let's hear from you. Henry Schutzbier. Las Vegas, NV

Aircraft completely demolished, burned, pilot climbed out of cockpit and walked out through flames. said it was his 2nd incident in 2 weeks. I have pictures of the a/c cartwheeling down strip at K-52. Any one know who he was or remember the incident ?
