Comments: Still looking for tent-mates John Allen, Mead, Miller, Garbochok, and interpretor Chal Wal Bin.

Remember well duty at "Gundeck" and detachment on Imjin river.

I recently acquired a Korean War vintage M-1 carbine like the one which was my constant companion in Korea. It stands now where I can see and touch it every day.

Comments: 607AC&W Sgdn was located 60 miles east of Soul stayed two nights and tranfered to side of mountain about 30 miles north of Soul while site at the top was being developed. Made sure the trucks could make it to the top and made repairs to get them back to the old lacation. Moved to site in the valley in the spring. Was issued a 45 cal grease gun (my ears still ring) was later able to get a carbine. Great outfit and those that errored found the opportunity to march around the flag pole from sunset to sunrise. Returned to states and retrained into Flight line Ground Power 27th FIS, (F-86)&(94C)Rome NY. In 1958 changed to Electical Power Production 392 Missile Training Sqdn,(THOR) Camp Cooke now VFB

Looking For Hanson? of color sile on our way home in Dec 53.

George Campbell wrote on 2005-06-10 00:00:00.0

Comments: I was a Radio Operator in the 607th AC&W squadron from Jan 53 to Dec 53. We spent the entire year living in tents and riding the 6X6 trucks up the radar hill everyday. Sometimes the trucks had a hard time making it all the way up the hill during the winter or the monsoon season and we would all have to bail out. All F-86 flights were routed through our central radar control. Does anyone have a copy of orders for those of us shipping back home in Dec 53? I would like to find Hanson, whose first name I can't recall. He and I flew back to Japan together on our way back home and for some reason I wish I could explain now I gave him my collection of Kodak slides taken during my year in Korea. I'm sure that if even if I am remembering the name wrong he won't forget the guy that gave up his slides. I was part of the crew that set up a radar site along the Hahn river to catch Bed Check Charlie. It turned out to be a success and the Navy setup was able to shoot a few of them down. It is noteworthy that while we were on the detachment duty the Chinese were just a few hundred yards across the river and never fired a shot at us. By that time in the war we had pretty much destroyed their supply lines. Someone may remember this story: While we were setting up the portable radar we used some C4 to blow a hole big enough for a field latrine and a Marine jeep came racing up the hill to see if we had taken a hit. It turned out that the Marine detachment near our radar site had not been getting combat pay since there had been no enemy fire in several weeks. Is that really true? Here is a story that only my buddy would remember: He and I decided one day to take our day off and go see the front. We hitched our way up there and then just started walking up the road well past the artillery until a guy dressed in camo popped up and told us we were getting into a dangerous area. We never did see or hear much activity but hightailed it out and made our way back to our tent city.

Comments: Comments: Getting ready to visit the WWII Memorial in Wash D.C.in June 2004, I found this great Korea website again. But like many of us, my memory wont lock-on without great input like you provided.

My recollection, like yours, is of the outfit with codenames like Gundeck and Hillbilly, and our detachment was just a few hundred yds from the Imjin River bridge, the 38th Parallel, and THE major MASH unit from TV fame (the 8055th) where we went to movies regularly. We were a couple miles from the DMZ on the main route 1(?) north from Seoul. Only names I remember is Mr Rose , who regularly was controller, Dick Stanisch, and medic Doc Newell. I remember often being shot at during No. Korean infiltration on the Imjin R. and the daily incoming MASH helicopters from the front sometimes with bleeding arms showing a few feet above us as they headed for the hospital just as the TV show portrayed.

I recall when, radar-watching a B-29 run with a Korean tailgunner, in mid-mission over Pyongyang he heard a Mayday and bailed out alone. We followed his flight on radar best we could and notified his hq. He later made his way thru the lines safely. Also remembering , during the rainy season in '52 , that No Korean infiltrators were coming down the Imjin on logs etc, and our Army guards were posted on the Imjin bridge potshotting them. We were shot at by them while scouting the nearby hills. Going all the way to Tong du Chon y to midnite Mass at Christmas with visiting Cardinal Spellman.

These ring any bells? Where can I get more data on outfits like ours and other guys? Thanks for bringing back great memories.

Comments: just stumbled on to this site, and I am in awe of what you are all doing.

I was assigned to the 607th AC&W Sq. in the summer of 1949, when it was stationed at Turner AFB, Ga. Served with that unit and its satellites units from that time to April 1952, when the original personal rotated back to the States.

I was assigned to the communications section.

It would be a delight to find, hear from, and/or to provide any historical information that I might add to the web site.

More: Thanks for the rapid reply about the squadron. We initially were sent TDY to the Far East.

After being there for about six months, all were made PCS.(God haven't used all these initials in long time)

Comm Section had a small group that was sent ahead. They were thrown into Forward Air Control jeep teams. We had those going all the time we were over there.

I would be more than happy to try and supply what little historical information about the Squadron I can.

I often think about the fellows that served, and of course, wonder what happened to them. As stated, I spent about two years with the unit. Started as PFC, and ended up S/Sgt.

Comments: Just looking to see if any of the 607th radar maintenance crew from 53-54 are still around and interested in communicating. I have looked for a few people but without success. My bunk mate was Willy Ouzts and served with Jim Single, Joe Sordi, Dewey Senecal, Alan Mowbray among others. I saw an entry from Alan Mowbray from a year ago but have not had any response from him. I have seen some references to a reunion but nothing very specific. Any feedback would be welcome.

Comments: I was stationed at K-6 from Jul 59 to Jun 58 during that period the Squardon designation was changed from 607th AC&W to the 6123rd AC&W. Also durning that time the Army took over operations of K-6 from the Air Force leaving only the communication and radar station on "the hill" to be operated by Air Force personel.

Comments: I have noticed several references to the 6132d. Who or what were they. I arrived at K-6, Pyong-Taek in Aug 0f 1958, and stayed until Jul of 1959, when the ROKAF took over operations. The unit I was assigned to was the only Air Force unit on an otherwise Army post, and it was called the 6123rd Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron. I still have copies of orders/PAM's, etc with the squadron letterhead. Just nit-picking, sorry

If you are the John Quinn I was in Korea with I have a few pictures of you that don't show your red hair, but you can see the freckles. I took them during a blizzard on the mountain in Pyongyang, remember? We were fueling up those Buda diesels we had for power units. I have some others also that were taken on the hill in Teague. Jim Reagen, Keith Bennett, Kruse, Magby, Jim Kline, Whitehead, and I forget some of the others. I'm not to good at this computer, scanner stuff but i'm trying. Me, the teletype operator, having a hell of a time typing. I never liked typing and being in the communications shack anyway. Thats why I went driving in that 6x6. Sure wish I had found this site before now, but sometimes better than later. E-mail me Johnny and I'll answer right back. Any one else with names I posted and I'll answer. Thanks guys.

Comments: I arrived at Yamato Air Station in Japan in Mar. of '56 and was sent to Osan-nee, Korea to a 607th AC&W site. Our call sign was "Green Horn". We were a few miles from Osan, Korea. During the year I was there I worked as a radar operator, operated the DF site and filled in for the mailman for a short period when he had to go home due to a death in his family. I am trying to locate some of the guys who were stationed there at the same time or anyone for that matter who was there during '56/'57. The guys I am looking for are Jack D. Whatley from Dade City Fla., Bill Huget from Madison Wisc., George Ball from Ft. Smith, Ark., James Parker from S. Carolina and/or Jim Mullinix from Baton Rouge, LA. I came home in early '57 on the MSTS ship, the Gen. Hugh J. Gaffey. Any help would be appreciated.

Some of their names...James Mitchell, Glenn Walden(what a comedian)!..Comer Stringer, Stueve, Sparr, Newton, Merrill. The Radar Maint. officer was Lt. Eby & C&E Officer was Capt. Pennington. The NCOIC of Radar was M/Sgt Smith. Cpt Pennington was pointing out to his boss an arc in the Radar Transmitter one day and was severely shocked by the arc. M/Sgt Gordon Smith then was credited with saving his life by giving him APR. I remember a 6X going off the side of the mountain & injuring several. We were allowed 2 R&R trips during the year. My friend Mitchell & I went 2 times to Nagoya Japan. When we finished our tour in Korea, the same guys who accompanied me to 607th were all sent to Tyndall AFB, Panama City, Fl to complete

I served with U.S.Air Force AC&W Units (607 and 6132) from Albany GA,
Turner AFB. We arrived in Oct '50. Went from Pusan to Pyongyang, some
guys went up as far as Yalu.

After most forces had evacuated from the North, we were one of the last
to leave Pyongyang. I drove a 6X6, with radio van and trailer into
Seoul. It took about 24 hours, because of 'road-blocks' and slippery
mountain roads.

Spent some time on a mountain in Taegu (radar comm site) and another
mountain site near Kangnung. Left Korea in April l952. My job was first
Air Police and then mostly power unit operator for electric supply.

Stars and Stripes

Just a tad of info about the type of work that we did in the 607---
The article is from the Stars & Stripes dated 26 April 53.

'Unconscious' Pilot Bombs Controller Guides, Saves Blacked-Out Flier
With Fifth Air Force, Apr 26 (Pac S&S)

---First Lt. Richard L. Spaulding fell into a twilight sleep while
flying his Thunderjet fighter-bomber over North Korea recently and woke
up an hour later to find the aircraft nearly shaken apart, although it
landed safely.

"It was as though I were in a dream," said Spaulding. His oxygen
equipment was discovered to be faulty. When as Air Force ground
controller, Capt. Clarence H Bell, saw the plane out of control on his
radar screen, he guided the blacked-out pilot to a target area where
the bombs were dropped and then to a landing field. Spaulding does not
remember releasing the bombs.

The ground controller, who is credited with saving the pilot and the
plane, said, "I had him just north of our nearest air base, in a
position that would have made a perfect bomb run, when he suddenly
asked me if he had released his bombs yet."

"I almost jumped off the mountain. I could just see that air base
after a couple of 1,000 pounders exploded in the center of it."

The dazed pilot had to be coaxed all the way by Bell as if he were
hypnotized.

He said later he could remember only that the plane was shaking. "I
remember the plane vibrating with an awful violence. I was convinced
that it was exploding.

Spaulding refused to land at the first field. Bell then led him to
another air base and guided him down to a perfect landing.

-----End of article--We looked out after your dad and the others
under our supervision closely. As well as telling them where to go and
what to do once they got there. This happened while I was on duty at
the site in charge of radar maint.

Hope you enjoyed it. Tell your Dad Hi for me.

Radar Hill 52-53

Subject: Leonard Holden, 1952-53

I was in the 607th as a radar operator from Oct. 1952 until Sept. 1953.
Spent many hours on radar hill. I recall our call sign was Romeo. We
were controllers of most front line air support missions as well as
keeping tract of bombing missions in the north. Radar mountain was close
to the 38th parallel and not far from the front lines during my stay
there.
