Comments: Looking for an old friend Ronald E. Schwartz of my father-in-law, Edward Shepard, who served with him in Kangnung, Korea in 1955. They were stationed together at Williams Bay, AFS, Wisconsin in the 755th, and were in the 606th ACW in Korea. They were crew chiefs on CPS-6B. I believe Ronald was from Toledo, Ohio. Ed passed away in February, and we found some pictures of Ronald that we would like to give him or his family.

Comments: I was with the Air Police unit, most of the time in the K-9 unit, living up on the radar site. I remember the F-86 crash and the big NNITS demonstrations during the summer of '55. How about the wicked winter of 55-56 ? My close friends were Don White,David Adair,George Pryor,Cato Hardy. I enjoyed raiding the whore houses late at night after the trucks had picked up all the airman and took them back to base at 2200 hours. my name is clyde hall, I was the tall redheaded AP in the unit. White and Pryor and I have remained in touch all these years and visit each other often.

Looking For a Picture of Duane Tollerud

Donald Kennedy wrote on 2006-02-16 14:47:19.0

Comments: Duane Tollerud was in the 606th from approx. April of 1952 to April of 1953. He worked in the FM vans. His pride and joy was the handlebar mustache that he started to grow the day he arrived and was still sporting it when he left. He was a full blooded Norwegian from MN and told you about it soon after you met him. Duane passed on in 1993 in Punta Gorda Florida. His daughter contacted me thru this site looking for pictures but I had a lot of my old pictures destroyed that were in a box in the garage and we had a flood in the 1980's. I would appreciate any help I can get on this, this young girl loved her dad a lot and still misses him. I know a lot of you have pictures laying around in drawers. Send me any pictures you have of guys with a handlebar mustache. I will recognize Duane and forward the pictures to his daughter. Thanks

GREEK C-47 ACCIDENT AT PAENGYONG-DO (K-53)

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Themis Vranas wrote on 2005-04-09 09:43:34.0

Comments: My name is Themis Vranas and I am a teacher in the Hellenic Elementary School.

I research the accident of C-47 s/n 49-2622 of 13th RHAF (Greek Air Force ) that occured on Sept. 17, 1951, at Paengyong-do island (K-53). During take-off, the right main wheel found soft ground and the plane went straight to the sea, with almost take-off speed. Fortunately, there were no fatalities or serious injuries, but the C-47 seemed doomed as it was floating into the sea with its cargo doors open.

Two brave men of 606 AC&W Sqn, Det. 2, Cpl Walter W. Henricks , AF 16310913 and Pfc James J. Clark, AF 11192126 were at the beach, preparing to leave the island with an LST. They aided the crew come ashore and then volunteered to save the C-47 by fixing chains and cables at its tailwheel, a very risky job to sat the least. They were fighting for almost an hour in the cold waters and tide. Finally they made it, but Henricks was hurt by the tailwheel and rescued by Clark. No citation was ever given to these two heros by the USAF or HAF for that action.

Thanks to Sgt (USAF) James Lorenz of 608 AC&W Sqn I contacted mr Henricks.

Can anybody give me any info about James J. Clark then and/or now ? Is there any eyewitness of the above mentioned accident? Does anybody have any recollections of the Greek Flight in general or any photos of the Greek planes ?

Just for the history, s/n 49-2622 is still proudly flying operationally with the Hellenic Air Force. It is one of only three operational military C-47 in Europe, not one military in USA !

Additionally, s/n 49-2622 is the sole military operational aircraft of any type in the whole world that fought in the Korean War and still serves the same Air Arm just like 55 years ago !

Thank you for your time reading all the aboove,

you all have my respect,

Themis Vranas

We were all housed in the first squad tent on the right, past the first Quonset hut over the hill from the mess hall, and oh yes, almost forgot, around the bend from the NCO club. Comments: Steve Galaida and I were there when Bedcheck Charlie damaged kitchen and outside tables. We both rotated to the States soon after the attack, about June 20th. We were both from New Jersey. Before this tour, he and I got to the States when the North Koreans invaded. We had just come back from a tour in Alaska -- one year isolation duty. It was the 632nd AC&W Squadron that was in Alaska. When the Korean War broke out, we were on a ship going to Seattle. In the following weeks, we were assigned to the 606th AC&W. He and I went on the advance party in August and 15 of us flew to Japan. After 3 days in Japan, we flew to South Korea. We also received from President Truman the good news of a one year extension on our enlistment, which qualified us for a Korean tour. We also went up to North Korea in November 1950 and we set up the radar site. As soon as we accomplished that the Chinese entered the war and we left everything on the hill and were ordered back to Pyongyang and Seoul where we stayed before we went further south. Would like to hear from anyone who remembers me or my buddy.

Bob Finch wrote on 2003-01-07 11:35:59.0

Comments: Would like to hear from 606th veterans who --- Served in Korea in 1951 and 1952 and --- Were still on active duty thru 1953 and --- Who have a copy of their 201 file.

I was attached to 606th from Mar 1951 to Mar 1952. As a result, my records contain a restriction on involuntary reassignment to Far East Air Force Projects. At this point it is no big deal, but my curiosity is enough that I may yet go to the archives at Montgomery AFB.

If you meet the three criteria above and have copy of your 201 file, you might save me a trip!!!

Any help will b appreciated.

If you could help me with more history to add to the page it would sure be appreciated. Also, if anyone is hunting other 606ers I can add that to the page also.

Thanks in advance Jerry Harrell

Comments: I served with the 606th from June 52 - June 53. I am an African American who was in radio maintenance and worked out of the FM Radio Vans. I remember monitoring the transmissions between our Radar controllers and the pilots flying out of Kimpo. Really don't remember any names of others, but do remember certain experiences...Bed check Charlie, Korean Funeral in back of our tent area. I remember we had a liitle dog mascot, which was accidently shot one night by one of our air policeman. Would love to hear from anyone that might remember me or other events during that period. Upon leaving Korea,I was assigned to Pope AFB in North Carolina, and was detached to Seymour Johnson AB. Discharged in Feb 55. Stayed out for 7 years, reenlisted in 1962, worked in Ground Radar Maintenance, retired in 1980.

Can anyone out there confirm? Thanks. John Good

Comments: Hi Len & 606 TCS folks. I was at one side of the same mountain as you were at Kimpo. We ran Downing DF (later Mint Julep)as a backup to your radar on Dog (emergency channel). We went to your chow hall and airmens club.We were radio maintenance graduates of Scott AFB,assigned as radio operators for the Net Control Station on top of Old Smokey and whatever else it was called. We got bearings from 4 sites including Paengyongdo,Chodo a site near Inchon,a mountain in mid Korea and us. We used a URD-2 Direction Finder and a plotting board with a compass rose to give fixes and steers to planes in distress.I have a photo from our side showing your place and the snowplow antenna.I also saw plenty of fires and rough landings below at Kimpo (K14 just like you did.Iwas reassigned to Seoul Namsan (south mountain) and back to radio maintanance of FM radios in a van. Stateside I was in AACS (Control Tower Radio Maintenance ) at Wright Patterson -Dayton,Ohio and later Mc Connell AFB,Wichita KS.I have a good friend in your area, Straford,NH. As a civilian, I worked at AC&W sites in Watertown,NY,Seattle,Opheim MT, and Omaha,Neb. WE put in the SAGE system of computers to change radar data to computer data for the Air Defense Command.Hope to see some of you at the reunion.Frank

Comments: Joined the 606th in May 51 just in time for the move from Suwon to the Radar Hill just north of Kimpo. M/Sgt Lokan gave me the Height Finder Van to prepare and then I discovered I was to drive it. It was a real struggle to keep up with him. The Radar Maintenance troops were real professionalists. I was soon sent to Pusan with Cpl Cephas Cook to ship a couple of radar sets back to Japan Depot. Upon return, I had just about settled in and enjoying working in support of "Dentist" operational crews, when I was selected to join the 3903rd unit in Chunchon since they were being rotated back home. So I had a lot of experiences with the 606th and finally rotated back to the states in Feb 52. I remember Glen Caudle and Dale Cheney followed me to Chunchon and ended up together at Tyndall AFB. A nice surprise.

I also ran the beach. Remember the nurses that would come up from Seoul and Osan?

Remember the "spontaious demonstration" at all of the bases in SK that had Neutral Nations Inspection Teams (NNITs)? The Koreans wanted the Poles and Czechs (Communists) to be expelled. We ended up shooting tear gas and vomitting (?) gas into the big crowd outside the front gate.

K-18 was wierd but I really enjoyed my time there - except for one AP who had a dog...

The 606's final mountain top radar sight overlooked K-14 "Kimpo"
We were Known to every pilot flying north of the 38th parallel as
"GreenHorn Control" and bore the responsi-
bility of knowing where a downed pilot was located and directed
pickup when at all possible...

Many a pilot depended on our ability to bring them home with
accurate direction finding equipment and operators,B-29 pilots
flying from island bases were especially glad to hear from us.

Have many pictures and even a kind of year book covering our
complete stay in Korea from SUNDAY Sept 224, 1950 to
