SANNEMAN wrote on October 9, 2008 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN Comments: I was with 5TH Commrondiv from 1957-1958 as a Ground Radio Operator at Tachikawa. Was sent to Korea and was AIC at Pusan, K9. We shared space inside the compound with US Army. The Commanding Officer, Major Apgar would fly over occasionally from Tachikawa to see what was needed. Except for the rats in the Quonset Hut it was good duty. Many power failures! Remember: Gibson, Wooten, Chasteen, Sickler, houseboy Homer (O Ku Won) and the US Army "hot food". Keywords: |

| MIKE DAILING wrote on November 16, 2005 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: 5TH COMM SQ. DET MACTAN AB PI SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN Comments: Retired now and looking back... on the great years in the air force particularly the 5th Comm Squad mobile communications in support of C-130 vietnam flights mostly. Left Keesler for Mtn. Home then Da Nang, Tan Son Nhut.. and Finally 'paradise' at Mactan Air Base Philippines. A real tiny place of white sand, emerald waters, and tall coconut palms. Great locals who just so much admired GI's here it was a hazard sometimes to go into town... being enveloped with little kids who just wanted to touch you. The parents even waving the hands of the toddlers out of the nipa huts as we would walk or drive by. I spent only 1 year in this place but like so many other airman have a book of stories to tell about our experiences. Oh how great it would to be back in those times again. If anyone was familar with my detachment please write me. Also, Is there a WEBSITE for a 5th Comm. Squad Association? | NICK TKACHUK wrote on May 8, 2005 CITY AND STATE: BROWNSBURG IN UNIT: DET 1 5TH COMM SQUADRON (315TH AIR DIV. COMBAT CAR SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ARMY VETERAN Comments: Keywords: I was stationed in Naha, Okinawa from Dec 1961 thru June 1963 assigned to Det 1, 5th Comm Sq Cmd operating support missions with the 315th Air Div Combat Cargo. Being in a mobile Communications Detachment meant travel thoughout the far east. TDY assignments took us to the Phillipines, Vietnam, Thialand, Tiawan, Korea, and Indonesia. We were TDY in the Phillipines several times. I remember one night A/3/C Raymond Sarinana and I were working in our tent. Ray was a radio operater and I was the crypto guy. The commander of the 5th Comm Squardon in Tachikawa Japan showed up at our tent and gave both Ray and I a box. Inside were Stripes... Ray and I were promoted in the field to A/2/C. The commander said we deserved it. Sure made us both proud to be in the Air Force. I have made contact with Ray recently. He has a Heart condition just as I have. Both of us have many memories, from living in a tent in the jungles of Thailand, working long non-stop hours in Vietnam, Korea, and on assignment with the United Nations force in Djkarta, Indonesia during Indonesia/New Guina war. If interested, 5th Comm Sq has an annual reunion. This year it's in Dayton, Ohio in October. |
