Comments: Was in Keflavik 1965-1966. Ground Equip Repair shop. MD-3 was my special friend on the flight line. Got to take rides in the "GUPPIE" as we called the 2 seater 102. Have pictures of us over the due line with the BEARS and the BISON. Lots of close up shots to remember them by. Also worked in Cafiteria at night to make enough to stay afloat. By the way never use the Navy's Captians Ladder in the Naval Hanger.

Comments: Spent 3 great years with AFI, 57FIS, the remote sites like Hofn and Rockville . . . and many other great experiences at "Kef". As Chief of Social Actions for AFI I serviced all the units at Kef, not just the Air Force. We had many Navy and a few Marines in our program. Alas, at the time only two Army personnel were stationed at Kef. Flew the station bird any number of times to the UK. Probably one of my most memorable tours of duty in 25 years of Active Duty. Was at Kef from 1973-1976, yes, I extended my 2 year tour to a 3 year tour. AFI commander at that time was Col Wainwright, later to become General Wainwright. Also knew many of the Jolly Green Giants on the Island and spent a lot of hours at the Whiff! Ev every outfit had their own "club" in their barracks. And of course there were the DoD teaching staff. All of them, military and teachers and Icelandics alike were a great bunch of people. I think about the tour often . . . and I have been retired for over 30 years.

Comments: I was stationed at Keflavik 4/73 to 4/74. That's where they sent me during the Vietnam War. Worked in PMEL in the old quonsett huts. My barricks were near the USO center building. I miss the earthquakes, 2nd floor bar / blackjack table in the barracks, and the klaxton going off at 5am because the Bears were flying by. :o)

Waiting on the Rotator Flight |

Comments: I remember going on a camping trip one weekend and we had a ball. I enjoyed working at the Top of the Rock club as a cook during the day while I worked graves on the flight line. This was by most one of the best tours I had. We got seprate rations so I made out good cause I ate at the club and we also had a nice kitchen in the dorm across from my room to cook in, cause that Navy chow hall sucked, all the Locals came to eat there when they served Lamb. I remember when Korean FLT 007 got shot down by the Russians and the Base when full alert at 7 pm on a Saturday. They had 20 or more Bears in the sky. Our commander was ( Funkhowser )we called him the Funk. Now I see the country of Iceland is broke. I know they miss the NATO base jobs since it closed. Maybe one day I will get a chance to go back for a visit.
Keywords: Milton Hamm , Sidney Dexter , Robert Brown , were my running buddies. nothing like the card games at work and the food in the refridge. Waiting at the bus stop for the bus to go to work and base taxi. then there was pay taxi's 4141 and 5151

Comments: I was stationed with the 57th FIS 1962-1963. We just converted from the F89 to the F102. I worked on the MG10 Fire Control System. We went on full alert during the Cuban Crisis. Not knowing what was happening we stayed in the shop for 2 days eating and sleeping there. We thought we were at war because we had been chasing Russian Bears all the time. The aircraft were all loaded and sat ready on the ramp. A very scary time for all of us. I will never forget the cartoon that we had painted on the floor of the shop. Today that would never happen. Also KP in a Navy chow hall sucked.

I am looking for one that shows the numbers under the canopy and the tail numbers. If you can help me please email me. Thanks

Comments: Nav-Aids June 77- June 78. Moved into the avionics building. Was there when 63-589, fresh from PDM with its new ADC paint job, had to punch off its tanks (think it was bad fire warning loop) and the only 370's they had were still camo green with white bottoms. Went on alert that way. Great short tour. Remember the all night fish fry at the USO and the drunks coming in when the "Rock" closed; seeing what color the Marine's rock was on Saturday/Sunday mornings. All of the F-4s on alert during the Russian summer exercises.

Comments: From Sept 1967 - Sept 1968 I was the Fighter Officer at AFI who was responsible for coordinating squadron activites with the Icelandic Civil Aviation Authorities. I was also attached to the squadron and performed all the usual duties; regular flying training, pulling alert, etc. I was a member in good standing in the Whifferdill Club, and still consider the Whiff a "sissy drink." I hope to hear from some of the guys who were around when Cliff got his DFC for successfully dead-sticking a deuce into Kef through a 3,000 foot overcast - at night. I still have pictures of the celebration that occurred at the Whiff that night.

Comments: My father, Lt. Col. James Ward, was squadron leader of the 57th during the late 50's in Iceland. He died in 1973. I was young at the time and know very little about him. My 15 year old son is extremely interested in the Air Force and is a Cadet Master Sgt. in the Civil Air Patrol. We are both very interested in hearing anything about my father. If anyone has any information or stories, please email me. Thank you.

Comments: Looking for former members of the 57th FIS, Iceland, that were there from 1954 thru 1956. Like to hear from anyone else that was ever in the 57th also. We have located 123 former members. I, Del Oxford, held a reunion for the 57th here in Charleston, SC, Sept 2000. I publish a quarterly newsletter for our gang and stay in touch with everyone on a regular basis. I am in the process of writing a book on the 57th (1954/56), and I need everyone's input. If you were assigned to our squadron, or have a deceased family member that was assigned to us, please contact me, as we will have a special section in my book for those that have gone on before us.
