Comments: I,with 8 fellow Coastguardsmen, was stationed on the moutain site of 527th AC&W Group. Part of 1953. Commanding Officer was a Lt.JG FLYNN, an ET Chief (myself) and 5 Engineering Petty Officers, 2 Seamen. Got along fine with AF, who called us the CG who don't sail, We call them the AF who don't fly. Best part of my 30 years service.Left with a 600 word vocabulary in NihonGo.I still have beer mug labeled CHIEF.

Often think of this assignment - was one of my best during my 10 years in the Air Force. Arrived in Japan on the USNS Hase and departed Japan on the USS Menard (APA 201). If you remember me, send an e-mail. Glad to hear fr

Comments: After doing more research I've located the detachment that I was located at(7), identified as Moriyama--not sure why since the mountain was Takaoyama. I was in radar maintenance between Feb 1952 and October 1953. I'm confused that detachment 7 seems also to be a part of the 610th. Anyone know why? Our headquarters was located in Fukuoka, Kyushu island. Also was the 527th part of the 5th Air Force? Long time ago, my memory fades...

I was assigned to this location the latter part of 1952 and was there until I was re-assigned to Itazuke in the fall of 1953. Comments: I am searching for information about a book that was written by Howard Singer titled: "WAKE ME WHEN IT'S OVER" It's a funny story that was turned into a movie several years ago. The story is about an Air Force Radar operator that was stationed on a small island located between Korea and Japan in the Sea of Japan. Always wanting to make some extra money he turned the radar site into a R&R site for all troops going and coming between Japan and Korea. Although the story written by Mr. Singer was not true. There is strong belief that he wrote this story using his own experience as a radar operator while he was stationed on a small Island between Japan and Korea. In his book he calls the Island 'SHIMA" and describes this Island as having a mountain where the radars where located and a Dock that is located near a small village. This book was released in 1959. I am wondering if this island that Airman Singer was stationed on was Mishima. Does anyone remember this story, Movie or ever know Howard Singer? Does anyone know if Mishima was the Island that is referred to in his story? Fredio (Fred) Samples
