| PATRICK ENGLE wrote on December 3, 2007 CITY AND STATE: DUNEDIN FL UNIT: 50TH TROOP CARRIER SQUADRON SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN Comments: this is my last comment on my experiences of the korea war from aug 1950,to dec 1951..the purple heart that i never received..one clear cold afternoon..while dropping supplies to the army and or marines trapped up there in the frozen north [a cold front from siberia] after passing the dz tootsie roll/?..the a/c made a sharp right turn but wider the the pilot thought capt boyle..fly right over the hills that was awash with chinese troops..thinking what bar i'll be drinking in tonight..out of the blue,bullet holes racked the side and the bottom for the plane.sitting in the jump seat next to me was a paratrooper[the kicker ]bullets were flying everwhere one blew right thru the kickers back pack..an other teared from the bottom of the a/c and blew up the radio operators desk..splinters and metal parts scaped my legs..dazed..everone on board looked around ,where did that come from..flying a uneven course back to ashiya..landed..coming in on a wing a prayer....the whole left side of the a/c was full of holes..the prop. had a 14inch hole in it...the entire ground crew was out observing the damages...went over to the base hospital..cuts and scatches over my legs..was released ..and back to flying...they made me staff sergeant/ and gave me a air medal..for heroics..what hero...i was scared out of my mind..i hated flying and hated war..but what happened to my purple heart...the reason i never pushed it..the fact is my brother john..was with the 10th mountain div in italy and had his leg blown off..now thats a purple heart...this is probably my last entry..because of old age plus lung cancer, prostate cancer, heart..if someone is reading this a hundred years from now ./.remember i was one of lucky ones..the trues hero's are the troops that never returned...patrick engle Keywords: pusan,the invasion ,kimpo,phongyong,sananju, yalu, chosin reservoir, hungnam, haragu-ri...etc |

| PATRICK ENGLE wrote on October 17, 2007 CITY AND STATE: DUNEDIN FL UNIT: 50TH TROOP CARRIER SQ SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN Comments: after failing all my grades in john adams h.s ozone park..which is not easy ..apparently what is noted as a attention deficiency..aquaduct race track in the vicinty of the h.s...was my main enterest..i quit at 16 ..and at the time wasn't thinking about my futureonly a furlough..one evening in the summer of 1947...a friend of mine peter cusumano who had enlisted in the army in 1946 returned on leave from korea/japan..advised me to enlist in the air force..better chance of going to a tech school.the last words i ever heard was quote when you take the morse code test for radio/mech.. run through the entire session most people would quit.but you are bound to quess one out of three unquote...after finishing basic training at lackland afb ..the people the were going to tech at scott field ill...shocked i finished the r.o course..and was assigned to greenville afb s.c...arrive at the base on sun morning..reported to the clerk..told me to hope in a jeep and out we went to the flight line...a c82 sitting there..climbed up the ladder to the cockpit..the crew taxi out off we went into the wide blue yonder..ft bragg nc..what am i doing here i am frightened of heights..after dropping the ptroopers a the dz..and hanging on for dear life..returned to greenville..in turn i flew all over the world..greenland etc..as the korean war started i was up for discharge the usaf can't ship me..truman extented me a year..of we went to japan. arrived koreabase ashiya ..japan..dropping shuff/..the ironic part about this story is that cpl peter cusumano was killed in the bug out 2nd div..38inf g company at the gantlet..within one year of the conversation...left the af..got a job with the federal aviation adm..lga/jfk/isp..24 years..retired..also worked at a fire dept in nyc as a dispatcher...thanks to cpl peter cusumano..a hero..still looking for a relatives so he can have a proper burial...north korea nov dec 1950..chosin few... | PATRICK ENGLE wrote on August 7, 2007 CITY AND STATE: DUNEDIN FL UNIT: 50 TH TROOP CARRIER SQ SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN Comments: as my brain into nothingness...my last thoughts on being a crew member on a c119 flying boxcar. a job that i never wanted...gee but i hated flying...what happened to my original request for a a/e mech...no the af said i was left handed..the only problem was i had to put up with some of my fellow crew members pilots. co-pilots etc..crazy bastards from ww2...flying b17's on germany..beside the point i wasn't in control..the stunt they pulled one night approaching k8..misjudging the lenght of the runway..on the approach the pilot asked the co-pilot if he would like to land the a/c..ok i take the controls..knowing it was a short runway..he attempted to use the full lenght.not realizingthey was a slight rise at the approach...watching these two fooling around. we unexpectly to land on the runway but dropped the plane so hard..that it the read boons broke in half my jaw hit my knee, dazed we continued on down the runway..with the boons dragging ...one usaf c119 destroyed...five cigs at one time patrick engle in korea 1950/1951 Keywords: c119, ashiya japan, radio operator |

LINDERMAN JR. wrote on June 18, 2005 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: 50TH TCS ASHIYA, JAPAN 51- SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: Mr Old Man is Lindy linderman, he was in the Ariel resupply section and served as a rigger and supply man. He served in the 50th TCS and has photos of himself standing next to the "Devil" at Ashiya. I have his scrapbook and there is a beautiful pic of the Squadron flying over Fujiama. He was later sent to Morrocco in the late 1970's and when he got off of the air liner there were some old abandoned red tailed C-119s pushed off the end of the runway. He went down and discovered that his aicraft from Japan was among the bunch. He recognized the tail number, and was stunned! There was a local morrocan family and their animals living in the aircraft Lindy is still alive and doing well, he lives in Enterprise< Alabama GO RED DEVILS !! Keywords: The Red Tailed Devil's. |

| PATRICK ENGLE wrote on December 5, 2002 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: - Comments: the kicker was standing watching the ammo slide down the rollers and drop out the rear of the aircraft, parachutes billowing as the troops down below anxiously waited for resupply of ammmo and rations while fighting off the hordes of chinese that had surrounded them at the chosin reservoir in north korea. watching the kicker and small arms hitting the a/c oout of the corner of my eye i notice the kicker had tied the shroud line of his parachute to the side of the aircraft and proceeded to jump into the heat of the battle that was raging below quickly disappearing into the void, astonishing i proceeded to inform the crewthat the trooper said that he wanted some action and to advise everybody of consequence he tripped and fell out of the back of the plane..now it can be told after 52 years..he may be still wondering the mountains of north korea looking for action wishing him good luck s/sgt patrick engle nk Keywords: |

| PATRICK ENGLE wrote on November 18, 2002 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN - KOREA Comments: a sad look at the long lonely road..it was late nov 1950. a frosty crystal clear day after a passing of a siberian cold front, 50 miles south of the chinese border in the far reaches of north korea..we were unloading the aircraft of oil drums and supplies, but it was to late that, because the chinese army was trying to encircle the american eight army the troops were in full retreat down that lonely road south. a company of infantry hurring past yelled that the chinese were few miles to the north and its time to clear out..the major insisted we unload the oil because of weight problems and rutted runway..meanwhile i observed the infantry unit firing off to the west at some unknown target..bugout was called panic set in..standing on the choke filled dusty field, i felt a deep sadness come over me and the change of events in the last few months of 1950. the chief honcho in tokyo telling us we will be home by christmas what folly..as we slowly taxied out for takeoff i saw the sad dejected look of the troops moving south on that long dying road.god bless them s/sgt patrick engle nov 1950 age 19 north korea Keywords: |

| PATRICK ENGLE wrote on November 15, 2002 CITY AND STATE: EAST QUOGUE NY UNIT: FERRYING C82S TO THE AIRLIFT SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: - Comments: a story...a night in late december 1949..at 8000ft between newfoundland and goose bay labador..sitting and listening to the drum beat of the icing pounding and against the sides of the c82..at 18 years of age i said to myself what am i doing here i should be attending my high school prom and live the normal life of a teenager in that period after ww2..anyway while listening to the icing and the static on my crt 13 radio..the navigator informs the capt the he is not sure of our position..as the hair on the back of my head stood up...the pilot asked me to contact goose bay for a direction finding fix..since i was never put in this kind of situation before stressfully after calling goose bay via morse code the gound station advised us to steer 090 degrees..but the navigator said that was impossible..he cant be that far off course..about this time i glanced over my shoulder and low and behold the fire warning light comes on. and anyone that ever did any flying knows what that means..again i repeated to myself what am i doing here..naturally things always go from bad to worse..when the co-pilot decided to open the cockpit window..at 8000 in a snowstorm to see if the engine was on fire. and the wind howling thru the cabin papers flying the pilot and co pilot arguing with the navagator..holy ,,, what in the h... is happening here finally after 15 minutes of terror and not in the mood to bail out somewhere north of trackless wastes of canada or the endless reaches of the ocean, finally the pilot trusted me and steered 090 degrees which eventually contacted the gca unit ...needless to say their was no fire and the cockpit window was finally forced closed and we made a uneventfull landing at goose..bay Keywords: lost over the north atlantic |
